Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Moment That Felt Familiar

---

— Aether—

The name didn't leave him.

It stayed—quiet, persistent—like a thought that refused to fade.

…Agumi.

Aether stood at the top of the tower as he always did, overlooking the academy. The morning light stretched across the grounds, casting long shadows between the buildings. Students gathered below, their voices blending into a dull, distant hum.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing worth his attention.

And yet—

"…this is a waste of time."

The words slipped out under his breath.

For the first time in a long while, Aether turned away from the view.

He didn't hesitate.

He simply left.

The lower floors felt unfamiliar.

Not because they had changed—

but because he rarely came down.

The air was warmer here, heavier with noise and movement. Conversations overlapped, steel rang against steel, mana flickered unevenly in the distance.

Messy.

Unrefined.

Aether walked through it without stopping.

His eyes moved out of habit, catching details others ignored.

A flawed stance.

A misaligned spell.

A wasted motion.

Everything followed patterns.

Everything made sense.

Until—

he stopped.

It wasn't something he saw.

It was something he felt.

A shift.

Subtle, but distinct.

Like a single note out of place in a familiar melody.

Aether turned his head slightly.

His gaze settled on the training grounds.

And for the first time—

he didn't look away.

---

— Agumi—

"Again."

The clash of steel rang sharp and clean.

Agumi stepped forward, her movement quick and precise. Her blade met her opponent's with just enough force to break his balance.

He tried to recover.

Too late.

"Too slow."

There was no arrogance in her voice. Just honesty.

She moved again—faster, smoother—closing the distance before he could react.

One clean motion.

And then—

she stopped.

"…what?"

Her sword hovered mid-air.

Something felt wrong.

No—

not wrong.

Different.

Her chest tightened slightly, her breath catching for a fraction of a second.

It wasn't pain.

It wasn't fear.

It was…

familiar.

Agumi frowned, lowering her blade.

"…why now?"

"Hey—what happened?" her opponent asked, confused.

She barely heard him.

Her attention had already shifted.

Her eyes moved across the field—

searching.

Without knowing what for.

And then she found it.

---

— The Moment—

He wasn't doing anything.

Just standing there.

But somehow—

he didn't belong with the rest.

Aether stood at the edge of the training grounds, his presence quiet, almost unnoticeable.

And yet—

impossible to ignore.

Their eyes met.

The world didn't stop.

But for a brief moment—

it felt like it did.

The noise faded into the background.

The movement slowed.

Everything else lost meaning.

Aether's thoughts stilled.

Completely.

"…Agumi."

The name left him without resistance.

This time—

he didn't question it.

Agumi's grip tightened around her sword.

Her heartbeat felt louder than it should.

"…do I know you?"

The question came naturally.

Too naturally.

Aether didn't answer right away.

He studied her.

Not her stance.

Not her strength.

Her.

"…no."

His voice was calm.

Certain.

"But I've been looking for you."

A pause.

Agumi blinked once.

"…that's a strange way to introduce yourself."

"…maybe."

Neither of them moved.

But something between them settled—

quietly.

Like it had always been there.

Agumi exhaled softly, resting the sword against her shoulder.

"…you're interesting."

A faint smile appeared—not mocking, not forced.

Just real.

"…Agumi."

She said her name simply.

Aether's gaze didn't change.

"…I know."

She raised an eyebrow.

"…alright, now you're just being creepy."

For the first time—

Aether hesitated.

Just slightly.

"…Aether."

She nodded once.

"…Aether."

She repeated it like she was testing how it felt.

Then she turned slightly, stretching her arm as if nothing unusual had happened.

"…so?"

Aether looked at the sword in her hand.

Then back at her.

"…fight me."

A small silence followed.

Then—

Agumi smiled.

Not wide.

Not exaggerated.

Just enough.

"…I was hoping you'd say that."

---

🌌

But undeniable.

A name remembered.

A feeling returned.

And a connection—

that refused to stay buried.
