Chapter 3 - 003: The First Target

The music reached her before the doors did.

Soft. Elegant. Distant.

Like a memory she no longer belonged to.

Eva Vale stood at the entrance of the ballroom again, her reflection staring back at her through the polished glass. For a brief moment, she simply watched herself.

Same face.

Same dress.

Same girl.

But something was missing.

Or maybe something had been removed.

Her fingers lifted slightly, brushing against the cool surface. Her reflection followed, calm and composed, eyes steady in a way they had never been before.

She remembered how she stood here earlier.

Hesitating.

Doubting.

Hoping.

Now there was nothing to hesitate over.

Nothing to doubt.

And hope…

Hope felt like a useless thing.

Her hand dropped.

Without another thought, Eva pushed the doors open.

The warmth of the ballroom wrapped around her instantly, filled with voices and laughter and the clinking of glasses. Heads turned, not all, but enough.

She noticed.

Not emotionally.

Not nervously.

Just as a fact.

Their eyes lingered on her longer this time.

Her posture was different.

Her gaze sharper.

Her presence quieter but heavier, like something unseen had settled around her.

A few whispers followed.

She ignored them.

Her eyes moved.

Scanning.

Searching.

And then she saw him.

Kael Dorian.

Exactly where she had left him.

Standing at the center of everything.

But something had changed.

Or maybe it was her.

Her vision flickered again.

For a split second, the world shifted.

Lines.

Numbers.

Faint glowing indicators layered over reality.

Then they stabilized.

And this time…

They did not disappear.

Eva stilled.

Her gaze locked onto him.

Information surfaced.

Not from memory.

From something else.

Name: Kael Dorian

Status: High Influence

Emotional State: Stable

Threat Level: Moderate

Value: Undefined

Her breath did not change.

Her expression remained calm.

But her mind sharpened.

"…Evaluation."

The word echoed faintly within her.

So this was it.

This was what it meant.

Not just seeing.

Understanding.

Breaking people down into something measurable.

Something usable.

Her eyes shifted slightly.

The woman beside him.

The one from earlier.

Information followed instantly.

Name: Aria Lorne

Status: Elite Social Class

Emotional State: Interested

Threat Level: Low

Value: Minor

Eva blinked once.

The data faded slightly but remained accessible.

Like it was waiting for her to reach for it again.

Her gaze lowered.

Then lifted.

No confusion.

No fear.

Only clarity.

A quiet realization settled in her mind.

People were no longer just people.

They were variables.

Assets.

Risks.

And opportunities.

A faint pulse echoed within her.

Objective available.

Eva's attention sharpened.

For a brief second, the world around her dulled again, like everything else was being pushed aside to make room for something more important.

Objective: Establish first advantage.

Condition: Acquire influence within current environment.

Reward: System progression.

Penalty: None stated.

Eva absorbed the information without reaction.

Acquire influence.

Her gaze drifted slowly across the room.

Powerful figures.

Wealthy individuals.

People who shaped outcomes.

Controlled decisions.

And then…

Her eyes returned to him.

Kael Dorian.

High influence.

Moderate threat.

Undefined value.

A small pause.

Not hesitation.

Calculation.

Earlier tonight, she stood in front of him and asked for help.

Now…

The situation had changed.

Her head tilted slightly.

A new thought formed.

If he has influence…

Then he can be used.

The realization came easily.

Too easily.

And that should have bothered her.

It didn't.

Eva took a step forward.

Then another.

Her movements were smooth now. Controlled in a way that felt natural, as if she had always known how to carry herself like this.

People noticed.

Not because she demanded attention.

But because she didn't need to.

A man nearby paused mid conversation as she passed. Another turned his head slightly, his gaze lingering just a second too long.

She registered it.

Not as validation.

As data.

Useful.

Her steps slowed as she neared the center of the room.

Kael had not seen her yet.

Or if he had, he gave no sign.

Aria was still beside him, speaking softly, her expression relaxed.

Comfortable.

Certain.

Eva stopped a few steps away.

Close enough.

Her eyes settled on Kael.

And for the first time since she walked back in…

Something shifted.

Not in her heart.

But in the system.

Target recommended.

The words appeared without warning.

Eva's gaze did not move.

Target: Kael Dorian.

Her breath remained steady.

Of course.

High influence.

Direct access.

Strategic value.

The logic was clear.

Cold.

Efficient.

Perfect.

And yet…

A faint flicker passed through her mind.

A memory.

Standing in front of him.

Asking.

Breaking.

She watched him now.

The same man.

The same presence.

The same cold distance.

But it felt different.

Because she was different.

Her lips parted slightly.

Then closed.

The flicker vanished.

Replaced by something sharper.

More precise.

Decision made.

Eva stepped forward.

This time, she didn't wait.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't ask.

"Kael."

Her voice cut cleanly through the space between them.

He turned.

Instantly.

His eyes met hers.

And for the first time that night…

His expression changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

Recognition.

Surprise.

And something deeper.

Something he didn't show earlier.

Eva noticed.

Stored it.

Used it.

She held his gaze without wavering.

No softness.

No need.

Just control.

"I think we need to talk," she said.

Calm.

Steady.

Different.

Aria's brows lifted slightly, her attention shifting between them. There was curiosity there now. A hint of something sharper.

But Eva didn't look at her.

Didn't acknowledge her.

Because she didn't matter.

Not anymore.

Kael studied her.

Really studied her this time.

His eyes moved over her face, searching.

Comparing.

Trying to understand what had changed.

"What is it," he asked quietly.

Not dismissive.

Not cold.

Something else.

Cautious.

Eva tilted her head slightly.

Just enough to hold his attention.

"Something that will benefit both of us."

The words landed differently.

Carefully chosen.

Deliberate.

A subtle shift passed through the air.

Kael's gaze darkened slightly.

Interest.

Suspicion.

Both.

Eva saw it.

Measured it.

Then stepped closer.

Close enough now that only he could hear her next words.

Her voice dropped.

Soft.

Controlled.

And completely unfamiliar to the girl he had rejected not long ago.

"You have influence," she said quietly. "I need it."

A pause.

Then her eyes met his fully.

"And in return…"

A faint smile touched her lips.

Not warm.

Not gentle.

Something far more dangerous.

"I'll give you something you don't even realize you need yet."

Silence.

The world around them continued, unaware.

But something had already shifted.

Kael did not look away.

Did not speak immediately.

And that alone told her everything she needed to know.

He was listening.

Which meant…

She already had his attention.

And in this world…

Attention was the first step to control.

Deep within her mind, the system responded.

First connection established.

Eva held his gaze.

Unmoving.

Unshaken.

And for the first time since she walked back into that room…

She wasn't the one asking anymore.

She was the one offering.

And somewhere in the quiet space between them…

Kael realized it too.

He wasn't dealing with the same girl he rejected earlier that night.

He was dealing with something else.

Something colder.

Something sharper.

Something that, without him noticing…

Had already started pulling him in.
