Chapter 9 - The Weight of It

The residual heat under Kai's skin hadn't disappeared overnight.

It wasn't the overwhelming strength from his fight with Tyler, nor was it as sharp as the power that had surfaced near the science building. This was different. A steady warmth settled beneath his skin, lingering in his arms and chest as though the System had left something behind.

Kai could feel it whenever he moved.

When he sat still, he noticed it even more.

He hated how conscious he had become of his own body.

The stream was already running when he woke.

Angel didn't greet him with her usual cheerful voice. She sounded quieter, more attentive, as though she'd spent the night watching him.

"You're still carrying it," she said softly. "The System left something in you after the last spike. I can see it in the way you move."

Kai ignored her and got out of bed.

"The viewers noticed too," Angel continued. "Some of them are calling it a residual mark. I think it suits you."

Kai went through his morning routine without responding.

The warmth wasn't giving him any additional strength. It simply remained there, a constant reminder that the System had not finished with him yet.

He left the apartment later than usual.

The drone followed him down the street, but Angel remained mostly silent.

That silence bothered him more than her constant talking.

When Angel was speaking, at least he knew what she wanted. Now he couldn't tell whether she was giving him space or simply watching him more carefully.

His classes passed without leaving much of an impression.

He heard the lectures, took notes when necessary, and barely remembered any of them afterward. His attention kept returning to the warmth beneath his skin and the System panel that appeared whenever he focused on it.

**[Observer System – Star Interface]**

**Permanent combat fragment: 89% stabilized**

**One significant spike remaining**

**Chat Whisper: Available**

**Bond depth: Increasing**

Kai opened the Chat Whisper interface three times during the day.

Each time, he typed something.

Each time, he deleted it.

The first message was simple.

**Why me?**

He erased it.

The second was angrier.

**Stop watching me sleep.**

The third remained on the screen longer than the others.

**What happens if I finish the fragment?**

His finger hovered over the send option.

After nearly a minute, he deleted that one too.

He wasn't ready to give Angel his voice.

Not even through the System.

By late afternoon, the warmth beneath his skin had grown slightly stronger.

It wasn't painful, but it had become difficult to ignore. When Kai flexed his hand beneath the desk, he felt a faint pressure running along his bones.

On his way home, Angel finally spoke.

"You're fighting it."

Kai kept walking.

Her voice remained calm.

"You keep opening Chat Whisper, typing something, and deleting it. That's fine. I can wait."

Kai said nothing.

"But the System can't stay like this forever. It's almost complete. It needs one more significant spike."

He crossed the street without looking at the drone hovering above him.

"You already know what the power feels like," Angel continued. "You know how easy everything becomes when it answers you. That strength was temporary."

There was a brief pause.

"The next version won't be."

Kai's jaw tightened.

"Once it settles, it stays," Angel said. "And once it stays..."

Her voice softened.

"So do I."

Kai reached his apartment.

He unlocked the door and stepped inside, closing it harder than necessary behind him.

The television turned on before he had even taken off his shoes.

Angel was waiting on the screen.

She sat closer to the camera than usual. The lighting was soft, leaving her expression difficult to read.

"I know what you're thinking," she said.

Kai looked at her without speaking.

"You're worried that taking the permanent strength means you won't be able to walk away from this."

She tilted her head.

"But look at what's happening around you, Kai. The stream is growing. The viewers are invested. The System has already changed your life."

She smiled faintly.

"And I'm already part of it."

The warmth in Kai's chest pulsed.

He sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes fixed on the screen.

Angel didn't rush him.

She simply waited.

Kai opened the Chat Whisper interface.

His thumb hovered over the keyboard.

Then he typed two words.

**How long?**

He sent them.

Angel's eyes widened slightly.

Her expression softened almost immediately.

"You finally spoke."

She leaned closer to the camera.

"Even if it's through the System..."

A small smile appeared on her face.

"You finally spoke to me."

Kai remained silent.

"As long as it takes," she answered. "I'll stay as long as it takes for you to stop fighting it."

The System panel appeared.

**[Observer System – Star Interface]**

**Private contact recorded**

**Bond depth increased**

**Permanent combat fragment: 93% stabilized**

**Next spike will complete the process**

Kai stared at the numbers.

Two words.

That was all he'd sent.

Yet the fragment had jumped another four percent.

Angel smiled from the television.

"Thank you for talking to me, Kai," she said quietly. "Even a little. It means more than you think."

Kai reached for the remote and switched the television off.

The room fell silent.

The warmth beneath his skin remained.

It no longer felt as restless as before. It had settled deeper into him now like it knew sooner or later he will merge with it.

Kai stared at the dark television screen.

He already knew what the System wanted next.

One more spike.

Then there would be no going back.
