Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Weakest Link

The morning mist clung to the ruins of Thornwick like a shroud, and Kael Thorne forced himself to stumble slightly as he followed the salvage team through the corrupted village. It was a small performance, but an important one—everyone expected him to be clumsy and nervous in dangerous situations.

"Stay close to the group, Kael," Mira Ashfeld called out, her voice carrying the practiced authority of someone who'd led too many salvage operations into corrupted zones. "Last thing we need is you wandering off and getting yourself killed by a Fractured."

"Yes, ma'am," Kael replied with just the right amount of nervous uncertainty, adjusting the worn leather satchel that marked him as the team's memory fragment appraiser. He'd practiced that tone for weeks—eager to please but lacking confidence.

Around him, the other members of the Regional Salvage Guild moved with the efficient coordination of experienced memory absorbers. In this world, people could absorb memories from various sources to gain new skills and knowledge, but most were limited by their natural compatibility. Patch Kellam, for instance, could only absorb memories from other humans, which made him useful for extracting combat skills or technical knowledge from survivors or the recently deceased. The twins, Vera and Vex, had the rarer ability to absorb animal memories, granting them enhanced senses and predatory instincts that made them excellent scouts.

The memory caste system was simple but rigid: Purists like Patch could absorb from one source type, Dual-types could handle two, and the rare Multi-types could absorb from three or more sources. Your compatibility determined your social status, your job opportunities, and your value to organizations like the Salvage Guild.

And then there was Kael—officially registered as a weak Purist who could barely handle basic human memories without suffering headaches and disorientation. At least, that's what his carefully forged guild records claimed.

The truth was far more dangerous.

The translucent blue interface appeared at the edge of Kael's vision, visible only to him. Three months had passed since his transmigration into this world, three months since he'd discovered the Universal Memory System that allowed him to absorb memories from any source without restriction. Three months of carefully maintaining a facade of weakness while secretly growing stronger with each absorbed memory.

But maintaining his cover required constant vigilance. He couldn't afford to stand out or draw unwanted attention to his capabilities.

"Kael!" Mira's sharp voice snapped him back to attention. "I asked you a question."

"Sorry, I was trying to sense memory fragments," he said, focusing on the task at hand. It was true—he had been scanning the area, though his system provided far more detailed information than any normal appraiser could detect. "What did you say?"

Mira's gray eyes studied him with the intensity of someone who'd survived fifteen years in the memory salvage business. At forty-two, she was one of the guild's most experienced members, a Dual-type who could absorb memories from both humans and objects. This combination made her incredibly valuable—she could learn combat techniques from fallen warriors and weapon skills from enchanted blades.

"I asked for your read on the corruption density here," she said patiently. "Your sensitivity to memory fragments should give us some indication of what we're dealing with."

Kael concentrated, translating the detailed analysis his system provided into something a competent but unremarkable appraiser might reasonably detect.

"It feels heavy," he said thoughtfully. "There's a lot of fear and pain echoing through the area. Whatever happened here was sudden and violent." He paused, considering the information. "Probably a Fractured attack, based on the emotional residue."

Fractured were what happened when memory absorption went wrong. When someone tried to absorb memories incompatible with their natural abilities, or when they were exposed to corrupted memory sources, their minds could shatter under the strain. The resulting creatures retained fragments of their original personality mixed with chaotic, often violent impulses driven by the conflicting memories in their heads.

"Good assessment," Patch said, though his cheerful demeanor couldn't quite hide his nervousness. As a human-only absorber, he was particularly vulnerable to corruption—his limited compatibility meant he had fewer options if they encountered dangerous memory sources. "I'm getting the same feeling. This place has bad history."

Vera nodded in agreement, her enhanced hearing picking up sounds the rest of them couldn't detect. "There's movement deeper in the ruins. Something large."

Her twin Vex tilted her head, processing different sensory input. "Multiple contacts. We should be ready for trouble."

Mira raised her hand, signaling for silence. Her dual-type abilities made her one of the most capable fighters in their guild—she could absorb combat memories from human sources and weapon techniques from the tools themselves, creating a devastating combination of skill and equipment mastery.

"Standard formation," she whispered. "Vera and Vex on point, Patch and I in the middle, Kael at the back. If we encounter any Fractured, Kael stays at safe distance. Your job is to survive and catalog any memory fragments we recover."

*[Tactical Options: Multiple approach strategies identified]*

Kael nodded, accepting his assigned role without complaint. It made sense—as the team's appraiser and supposedly their weakest member, his job was to stay alive and handle the technical aspects of memory recovery, not engage in combat.

"Understood," he said simply. "I'll hang back and assess what we can salvage."

The creature that emerged from the ruins had clearly once been human. Corruption had twisted its form, elongating its limbs and covering its skin with patches of crystallized memories—physical manifestations of the chaotic thoughts that now drove its actions. Its eyes glowed with the sickly purple light that marked all Fractured beings, and when it opened its mouth, the sound that emerged was part scream, part sob.

"Single Fractured, human origin," Mira called out, drawing a curved blade that seemed to hum with absorbed memories of countless battles. "Corruption level appears moderate. Vera, Vex—flank it. Patch, support from range. Kael, stay clear."

"Got it," Kael replied, positioning himself where he could observe the fight while remaining safely out of range.

The battle was over in less than two minutes, but Kael used every second to study his teammates' techniques. Vera and Vex moved with the fluid grace of predators, their absorbed animal instincts allowing them to anticipate the Fractured's movements and coordinate their attacks without verbal communication. Patch provided support with combat skills he'd absorbed from various human memories—nothing spectacular, but solid fundamentals that kept him alive and useful. Mira's combination of human combat knowledge and weapon-enhanced abilities made her strikes devastatingly effective.

Kael watched with professional interest, noting techniques he might need to replicate if his cover was ever blown. But for now, his role was that of the non-combatant specialist, and he played it naturally.

*[Note: Absorption must appear within normal appraiser capabilities]*

"Nice work, everyone," Mira said, wiping her blade clean before sheathing it. "Kael, come take a look at this. There should be some memory fragments we can salvage, but be careful. Fractured memories are always unstable."

Kael approached the creature's remains, kneeling beside it with the practiced caution of someone who'd dealt with corrupted memories before. This was always a delicate balance—he needed to extract useful information without revealing capabilities that exceeded his supposed limitations.

"There's definitely something here," he said, placing his hand carefully on the creature's forehead. "The corruption has scrambled most of it, but I might be able to pull out some fragments."

*[Memory Source Analysis: Corrupted Human - Former Thornwick Resident]*

*[Available Memories: Local geography, hidden supply locations, final moments before corruption]*

*[Corruption Level: High but manageable with system filtering]*

*[Strategy: Extract key information while appearing to struggle with corruption effects]*

Kael closed his eyes and began the absorption process. His system effortlessly filtered through the corrupted memories, extracting clear, detailed information about the man this creature had once been. He learned the layout of Thornwick, the locations of hidden supply caches, and most disturbing of all, the truth about what had caused the corruption outbreak.

The final memories were crystal clear: figures in dark robes moving through the village at night, carrying crystalline devices that pulsed with unnatural energy. They hadn't come to fight—they had come to deliberately infect the villagers with corruption. This hadn't been a random Fractured attack. It had been biological warfare.

But Kael couldn't reveal the full extent of what he'd learned. Instead, he had to present his findings as the partial, difficult extraction that a normal appraiser might manage.

After a reasonable amount of time, he opened his eyes and sat back, rubbing his temples as if dealing with a mild headache—a common side effect of absorbing corrupted memories.

"I managed to get some useful information," he said. "The corruption scrambled most of his memories, but I found references to supply caches hidden around the village. Three locations where people stashed valuables when things started going bad."

Mira's expression brightened. "That's excellent work. Can you guide us to them?"

Kael nodded, standing and dusting off his knees. "The images aren't perfect, but I should be able to find them. There's one near what used to be the blacksmith's shop, another in the old temple basement, and a third hidden in a root cellar behind the mayor's house."

Using the perfectly clear memories he'd actually absorbed, Kael led them toward the first cache location. To his teammates, it would appear that he'd managed a reasonably successful extraction despite the challenging conditions—competent work that justified his position on the team without raising questions about exceptional abilities.

As the team moved deeper into the ruins, following Kael's directions to the supply caches, he found himself troubled by what he'd learned from the Fractured's memories. The corruption outbreak hadn't been natural—someone had deliberately infected this village. But he couldn't share that information without revealing how clearly he'd been able to read the corrupted memories.

The first cache yielded exactly what he'd expected: preserved food, basic tools, and several memory crystals containing various skills and knowledge. His teammates were pleased with the find, and Kael felt satisfied that he'd contributed meaningfully to the mission without drawing unwanted attention.

"Good work, Kael," Mira said as they secured the salvaged materials. "Your extraction was cleaner than I expected, given the corruption level."

"I got lucky," Kael replied, which was becoming his standard response to any compliment about his abilities. "The memories were fragmented, but some pieces were clearer than others."

As they prepared to move to the second cache location, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that the artificial nature of Thornwick's corruption was part of something larger. But for now, he would focus on his role as the team's appraiser and keep his more disturbing discoveries to himself.

The mission was far from over, and he had a feeling that what they'd found here was just the beginning of a much more complex and dangerous situation.
