Chapter 3 - WALKING DOWN THE AISLE

Natalie's POV

The music starts and Natalie's father takes her arm.

She's been waiting in that bridal suite for what feels like forever. Sophia helped her with the final touches. The veil. The bouquet. The small smile that Natalie practiced in the mirror about a hundred times. Now it's time.

Her father squeezes her arm gently. He doesn't say anything but he doesn't need to. She can feel his pride. Her dad has known about the broken marriage. He's watched his daughter rebuild herself. And now he gets to walk her down the aisle toward a good man.

The church doors open and Natalie steps into the aisle.

Three hundred people sit in perfect rows. They're dressed in beautiful clothes. Everyone looks happy. Cameras flash softly because Daniel's family is important in the medical world and the local news wanted coverage of the wedding.

Natalie focuses on Daniel.

He stands at the altar in his gray suit looking nervous and kind and good. His eyes find hers immediately and his face breaks into a smile. Not a fake smile. A real one. The kind that reaches his eyes. He looks at her like she's the best thing that's ever happened to him.

Three years ago, Natalie couldn't imagine anyone looking at her like that again.

Three years ago she was on her apartment floor at three in the morning wondering if she'd ever feel whole. Three years ago Aaron Blake looked at her like she was a problem. Like her dreams were embarrassing. Like loving him wasn't enough when she wasn't also rich and ambitious and important enough for his world.

But Daniel looks at her like she's everything.

She walks down the aisle slowly. Her father walks beside her. The flowers in her bouquet smell like roses and hope and new beginnings. The dress she designed feels perfect against her skin. She created this gown from nothing. Just like she created her company from nothing. Just like she created this new version of herself from the ashes of the old one.

This is what strength looks like.

Daniel's best friend stands beside him as groomsman. Sophia stands across the aisle as bridesmaid. The officiant waits with his prayer book open. Everything is set up correctly. Everything is perfect.

Natalie reaches the altar and her father releases her arm. He shakes Daniel's hand and sits down. Then it's just Natalie and Daniel standing in front of three hundred people.

"You look beautiful," Daniel says softly so only she hears.

"You look nervous," Natalie says back.

"Terrified," Daniel admits. "What if you change your mind?"

Natalie looks at this man who volunteered at hospitals. Who showed up in her boutique asking for a dress for his mother. Who proposed without drama or pressure. Who has been patient and kind and exactly what she needs.

"I'm not changing my mind," she says and means it.

The officiant opens his prayer book. He welcomes everyone. He talks about marriage and commitment and building a life together. His voice is warm and steady. The church is completely quiet. Everyone is focused on this moment. Everyone is watching Natalie Hayes marry a good man.

Daniel reaches out and takes both her hands.

His hands are warm and steady and safe. Natalie feels herself relax. This is what safe feels like. This is what peace feels like. No more fighting. No more trying to be enough for someone who keeps moving the goal line. Just quiet love with a man who sees her and values her exactly as she is.

This is her future.

No more pain. No more drama. No more lying awake at night wondering if she's good enough. Just a simple life with a good man who chose her first. Who will never make her feel small.

The officiant continues speaking about love and partnership and building something that lasts. Natalie listens to the words and feels something settle inside her chest. Three years of rebuilding has led to this moment. This beautiful, peaceful moment.

She made it.

She survived the worst pain imaginable and she made it to the other side. She built an empire. She found peace. She found love again. Not the burning, passionate kind that destroys you when it ends. But the steady, kind kind that makes you feel safe.

This is what winning looks like.

The officiant says something about objections. He asks if anyone here knows any reason why these two should not be married. It's just a formality. Nobody ever actually objects at weddings.

Natalie smiles at Daniel.

He smiles back.

The officiant opens his mouth to continue and then something happens.

A sound echoes through the church.

Not a loud sound. But distinct. The church doors slam open so hard the sound reverberates through the entire building. Everyone jumps. Heads turn. Cameras swivel. The music stops abruptly.

Natalie's heart stops.

She doesn't turn around yet. She doesn't want to turn around. She has a bad feeling about what's about to happen. Something in her gut screams that this moment is about to explode.

The officiant looks confused. Daniel's hand tightens around Natalie's.

Then she hears footsteps.

Someone is walking down the aisle. The footsteps echo like thunder. Nobody speaks. The entire church goes completely silent watching whoever this is walk toward the altar.

Natalie turns.

And her world stops.

Aaron Blake stands in the entrance of the church looking like a man who hasn't slept in days. His expensive suit is wrinkled. His dark hair is messy. His eyes are wild. He walks down the aisle like he owns it. Like nobody else matters. Like the three hundred people staring at him don't exist.

His eyes are locked on Natalie.

For a moment she can't breathe. Can't think. Can't process what she's seeing. Aaron Blake is in her church on her wedding day. This is impossible. This is a nightmare. This is her mind playing tricks because even after three years of moving on, she sometimes dreams about him showing up. She sometimes wakes up in a cold sweat with her heart racing thinking he's come back.

But he's really here.

Someone whispers. Someone else takes out their phone. Cameras start flashing. This is a big moment. A scandal waiting to happen. The media will love this.

Daniel steps in front of Natalie like he's protecting her from a threat.

"What are you doing here?" Daniel's voice is angry but controlled.

Aaron doesn't even look at him. He keeps walking. He keeps staring at Natalie like she's the only person in the world.

Natalie feels panic rising in her chest. This is wrong. This is all wrong. Three years of carefully rebuilding herself and Aaron Blake just walked into her church and destroyed it all.

"I need to talk to you," Aaron says to Natalie.

His voice sounds broken. Like it's been through something terrible. His eyes look desperate. His whole body shakes slightly and Natalie understands that he's barely holding himself together.

Part of her wants to help him.

The smart part of her wants to have security throw him out.

"Get out," Natalie says but her voice wavers and she hates that it does.

She's supposed to be strong. She spent three years becoming strong. She rebuilt herself to never need anyone. To never be hurt like that again.

And here he is destroying all of it with just his presence.

Aaron takes another step closer. Security moves toward him. But Aaron doesn't stop. He's walking with purpose. He's walking toward the altar. He's walking toward Natalie like nothing and nobody will stop him.

And then he does something that shocks the entire church into complete silence.

He drops to his knees.

Right there in front of three hundred people. Right there in front of cameras. Right there in front of Daniel. Aaron Blake falls to his knees like a man who just ran out of reasons to keep standing.

The church erupts.

Someone drops their phone. Cameras flash like lightning. People gasp. Daniel's face goes white. The officiant steps backward confused. Sophia suddenly appears at Natalie's side grabbing her arm.

"Oh my God," Sophia whispers.

Aaron is kneeling in front of the altar with tears streaming down his face. His whole body shakes. His hands reach out toward Natalie but he doesn't try to touch her. He just kneels there broken and desperate and completely exposed.

"Natalie, please," Aaron's voice cracks. "Don't marry him. I made a mistake. The biggest mistake of my life. I was an idiot. I was wrong. I never stopped loving you. I need you. Please."

Natalie feels her chest crack open.

Three years of healing just shattered.

She's standing at the altar in her perfect wedding dress that she designed herself. She's standing with a good man who loves her. She's standing in front of three hundred people and cameras and her entire carefully rebuilt life.

And the man who destroyed her is on his knees begging.
