The moment the dial tone buzzed flatly in Ravi's ear, the fragile illusion of control shattered completely. He stared down at the desk phone as if it were a venomous snake, his chest heaving, his hands trembling so violently that he nearly knocked his pen holder to the floor. The ghost had spoken to him, offered a cryptic blessing, and vanished back into the ether just as quickly as he had appeared.
"Rahul! Damn it, Rahul!" Ravi slammed his palm onto the polished wooden desk, the sharp slap echoing through his private office. Panic and frustration warred inside him. He had been inches away—he had the phone in his hand, a direct line, and yet he had let him slip away again.
Driven by an overwhelming, frantic anxiety, Ravi bolted out of his chair, abandoning his paperwork. He began pacing around his office, peering wildly out the tinted glass windows down at the bustling street below, tearing open filing cabinets, and frantically checking corners as if expecting Rahul to magically materialize behind a potted plant.
At that exact moment, the office door clicked open, and his girlfriend stepped inside, holding a pair of takeaway coffee cups. She froze mid-step, her eyes widening in sheer bewilderment as she watched Ravi tearing across the room, muttering to himself, dropping files, and frantically patting down his pockets like a man searching for a lost diamond in a thicket of thorny bushes.
"Ravi? Goodness gracious, what on earth are you doing?" she asked, setting the cups down hastily on the edge of a table. "Are you looking for something? Did you lose an important document?"
Ravi stopped dead in his tracks, breathing heavily, his hair disheveled from running his hands through it over and over. He looked at her, his eyes wide with a manic mix of shock and revelation.
"He called me," Ravi blurted out, his voice cracking. "Rahul. He just called me on this phone."
Her jaw dropped, the cups forgotten. "Rahul? Your college friend? The one you've spent years looking for?"
"Yes! He called out of nowhere!" Ravi paced back to his desk, grabbing the receiver and setting it down properly, as if punishing the inanimate object. "Think about it! Rahul came to the city. How did I miss his shadow? He called me and congratulated me for finding a good girlfriend, which means... which means he saw us. He was watching us together!"
He began ticking points off on his fingers, his analytical corporate mind racing backward through every recent interaction. "Rahul could always read a person's character at a glance, but when it came to the inner circle—me, Madhuri, Shreya—he never took chances. He never guessed; he observed. That means he didn't just stumble upon us today. He spent days watching us from the shadows, analyzing my life, making sure I was safe!"
She walked over slowly, placing a comforting hand on his stiff arm. "Ravi, calm down. Take a breath. If he was watching, that means he cares about you. Why are you panicking so much?"
"Because he slipped away again!" Ravi groaned, dropping his head into his hands. Then, suddenly snapping back up, he looked straight into her eyes with a desperate intensity. "Wait. Think back. These past few days, did you notice anyone watching us? Did any stranger approach you, talk to you, or hang around your building?"
She frowned, searching her memory. "No... nobody suspicious. Nobody was lurking around." She paused, a sudden flash of realization crossing her features. "Wait. No stranger was lurking, but... yesterday afternoon, when I was walking back from the stationery store near my apartment building, a man approached me. He had a mask on and dark spectacles, and he looked completely lost. He said his phone battery died and asked for directions to the old municipal park."
Ravi's eyes flared wide. "A mask? In this heat? What did he look like? What did he say?"
"He said he was struggling with directions, so I offered to drop him on my scooty," she continued, her voice growing animated as the pieces clicked together. "On the way, we talked casually. He asked me about my life, if I had someone special. And... and I told him all about you. I told him how hard you work, how much you miss your lost college brother named Rahul, and how I wished that if you ever found him, I could have him as a brother since I don't have any siblings."
Ravi stared at her, completely frozen, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "And... and what did he say to that?"
A soft, emotional smile touched her lips. "He paused for a second. Then his voice shook a little bit, and he told me with absolute certainty: 'If he ever comes back, I am certain he would be proud to call you his sister. You will definitely get him as a brother. Count on that.'"
Ravi's knees felt weak. He sank slowly back into his office chair, a wave of profound emotion washing over him. His heart hammered out a singular, deafening truth: It was him. Rahul was right there, sitting behind her on that scooty, listening to her talk about him.
"It was him," Ravi whispered, a tear spilling over his lash. "That man... was Rahul."
She gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Are you serious? That stranger... was Rahul?!"
"Yes," Ravi nodded, a bittersweet smile finally breaking through his anxious expression. "He tested you. He wanted to know who was standing by my side. And you passed, completely. He knew you were pure gold."
