Chapter 11 - 11. If I Break, Run

"Get away from me!"

Lyra's voice tore through the collapsing chamber.

Power exploded outward in violent waves, ripping through stone and light, shattering what little stability remained.

The walls cracked wider.

The ground split beneath her knees.

The symbols that once glowed in obedience now flickered erratically, like they could not decide whether to submit or flee.

Kael staggered but forced himself forward.

He ignored the pain in his ribs.

Ignored the blood on his lips.

Ignored the fact that every instinct screamed at him to retreat.

He did not move back.

He moved toward her.

"Lyra," he called.

Her head snapped up.

Her silver eyes burned brighter now.

Wild.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

"I said stay back!" she shouted.

Another surge blasted outward.

Stronger.

Faster.

This time it hit him directly.

Kael was thrown hard against a fractured pillar.

Stone cracked on impact.

Pain shot through his spine.

But still he rose.

Still he looked at her.

Still he refused to leave.

"You are losing control," he said.

Her breath came fast.

Uneven.

"I know!" she snapped.

The admission shocked even her.

It hung in the air.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

Real.

Kael took another step.

Careful.

Slow.

"Then let me help you."

"You cannot," she said.

Her voice trembled now.

The cold edge slipping.

Fracturing.

"You do not understand what this is doing to me."

"Then tell me."

"I cannot!"

Her scream cracked.

Power surged again.

But this time it did not just explode outward.

It twisted.

Turned inward.

Her body arched violently.

A cry tore from her throat.

Kael's chest tightened.

"Lyra!"

Her hands flew to her stomach.

Her breathing hitched.

"No… not again…"

The faint presence inside her flickered.

Stronger than before.

But unstable.

Like a flame caught in a storm.

"I am hurting it," she whispered.

The realization hit like a blade.

Her power.

Her instability.

It was affecting the child.

Kael moved instantly.

He closed the distance between them in seconds.

"Look at me," he said.

She did not.

Her eyes were fixed on her stomach.

Her hands trembling.

"I am going to kill it," she whispered.

The words shattered something inside him.

"No," he said firmly.

"You are not."

"You do not know that!"

"I do."

"How?"

"Because I am not letting you."

The certainty in his voice cut through the chaos.

For a moment

Her power faltered.

Just slightly.

Kael took advantage of it.

He reached for her.

His hand closed around hers.

The contact sent a jolt through both of them.

Not as strong as before.

Not as binding.

But still there.

Still real.

Lyra gasped.

Her eyes snapped to his.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"Grounding you," he said.

Her power surged again.

Reflex.

Instinct.

But this time it did not lash out wildly.

It hesitated.

As if unsure.

"You cannot stop this," she said.

"I am not trying to stop it," he replied.

"I am trying to keep you from breaking."

Her chest tightened.

"I am already breaking."

"Then I will hold what is left."

Silence cracked between them.

Because she felt it.

That pull.

Faint.

Fragile.

But real.

Her fingers tightened around his.

Without thinking.

Without meaning to.

Kael felt it too.

And for the first time since entering the chamber

He allowed himself to breathe.

"You are still here," he said quietly.

Lyra shook her head.

"No… I am not."

"You are."

"I cannot feel anything."

"That is not true."

Her gaze dropped to their hands.

Then back to his face.

Something flickered.

Something fragile.

"I feel…" she started.

Then stopped.

Afraid.

Because whatever it was

It hurt.

"Say it," Kael urged.

Her breath trembled.

"I feel… you."

The words were soft.

Barely there.

But they changed everything.

The chamber stilled.

Just for a second.

Like even the chaos paused to listen.

Kael's grip tightened slightly.

"Then hold on to that," he said.

Her power flickered.

Unstable.

But less violent.

Less destructive.

For a moment

It worked.

A slow clap echoed behind them.

The moment shattered.

The man stepped forward again.

Bruised.

Blood at the corner of his mouth.

But smiling.

Always smiling.

"How touching," he said.

Lyra's expression hardened instantly.

The softness vanished.

Replaced by cold control.

"This is your fault," she said.

His smile widened.

"No. This is your nature."

Kael stepped in front of her.

Shielding her.

"Stay back."

The man laughed.

"You think you can protect her from what she is becoming?"

"I am not protecting her from herself," Kael said.

"I am protecting her from you."

The man's eyes darkened.

"You are too late for that."

Lyra stepped around Kael.

Her gaze locked onto the man.

"You said I needed guidance," she said.

He nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Her eyes gleamed.

Cold.

Sharp.

"And you think you can control me?"

"I think I can teach you."

Silence.

Then

Lyra smiled.

But it was not warm.

Not kind.

Dangerous.

"Then teach me this," she said.

The air shifted.

Power gathered around her.

Faster than before.

More precise.

More controlled.

The man's smile faltered.

"What are you doing?"

Lyra raised her hand.

The symbols around the chamber responded instantly.

Not to him.

To her.

They flared.

Bright.

Blinding.

"I am learning," she said.

The ground trembled.

Energy surged upward.

Coiling around her like a living thing.

The man stepped back.

Real fear now.

"Stop."

Lyra did not.

The power condensed.

Focused.

Sharp.

"You wanted me to awaken," she continued.

Her voice dropped.

Cold.

Certain.

"Now you get to see what you created."

She moved.

Faster than before.

Faster than him.

In a blink

She stood in front of him.

Her hand pressed against his chest.

The energy exploded.

A concentrated blast.

Violent.

Precise.

The man screamed.

For the first time.

His body slammed into the far wall.

Stone shattered on impact.

The entire chamber shook.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Stunned.

Lyra stood there.

Breathing steady.

Power humming beneath her skin.

Kael watched her.

Not with fear.

With understanding.

"You are learning control," he said.

She did not look at him.

"I am learning power."

"There is a difference."

She turned her head slightly.

"And what is it?"

"Control does not destroy everything around it."

Silence.

Lyra's gaze flickered.

Just for a second.

Then

The chamber trembled again.

Stronger this time.

The cracks widened.

The ceiling groaned.

Something was wrong.

Worse than before.

"What is happening now?" Kael asked.

The man laughed weakly from where he lay.

"You broke the balance," he said.

Lyra's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"It means this place cannot contain you anymore."

The words landed hard.

Kael looked up.

The ceiling split open.

Light poured through the cracks.

Blinding.

Violent.

The entire structure began to collapse.

"Lyra," he said.

She already knew.

She could feel it.

The instability.

The unraveling.

"If we do not leave," Kael continued.

"We die here."

Lyra looked at the man.

Still breathing.

Still smiling through the pain.

"You are not leaving," he said.

Her eyes hardened.

"Watch me."

The ground beneath them shattered.

A massive crack split the chamber in two.

The floor began to give way.

Kael reached for her.

"Come on."

Lyra hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then

She took his hand.

The moment their fingers locked

Something surged.

Stronger than before.

Not just power.

Connection.

Faint.

Broken.

But real.

The bond.

It flickered.

Alive.

Both of them felt it.

And it changed everything.

The man saw it too.

His smile vanished completely.

"No," he said.

Lyra looked back at him.

Her expression unreadable.

"You were right about one thing," she said.

His breath hitched.

"What?"

"I am not what you expected."

The chamber collapsed further.

Stone rained down.

The light consumed everything.

Kael pulled her closer.

"Now is not the time."

Lyra nodded once.

Then

They ran.

The ground broke beneath them.

The walls fell.

The entire chamber gave in to the collapse.

But just before they reached the exit

The man's voice echoed behind them.

Cold.

Certain.

"You cannot run from this."

Lyra did not turn.

But she heard him.

Felt the truth in his words.

"You will come back," he said.

Her grip on Kael tightened.

"Because what is inside you…"

The world exploded into light.

The exit shattered open.

And as they were thrown into the unknown beyond

His final words followed them.

"It does not belong to you."

Silence swallowed everything.

And Lyra realized one terrifying truth as darkness closed in

He was not talking about her power

He was talking about her child.
