Chapter 3 - 3. Claimed by Fire

"Enough."

Lyra's voice cut through the night but it didn't stop anything.

The forest trembled under the weight of two Alphas ready to tear each other apart.

Kael stood with his warriors behind him, eyes locked on her like she already belonged to him.

Cassian didn't move.

Didn't flinch.

But the air around him darkened thick with something ancient, dangerous, and completely out of control.

Lyra's heart pounded wildly.

This wasn't just about her anymore.

This was about power.

Territory.

War.

And somehow… she was the center of it.

"Lyra," Kael said again, his voice lower now, but more dangerous. "Come here."

Her stomach twisted.

That pull.

Even broken, the mate bond still lingered like a ghost under her skin.

Calling her.

Hurting her.

"No," she said, forcing the word out.

The moment it left her lips, silence crashed down.

Kael froze.

The warriors behind him shifted uneasily.

Even Cassian went still.

Lyra swallowed hard, her fingers curling into fists at her sides.

"I'm not coming back," she said, louder this time.

Her voice trembled but her resolve didn't.

Kael's expression darkened.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

A flicker of something crossed his face.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something sharper.

"You're confused," he said. "You've been through."

"Don't," Lyra snapped.

The word surprised even her.

But once it started.

She couldn't stop.

"You rejected me," she said, her voice rising. "In front of everyone. You broke the bond like it meant nothing."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"I did what was necessary."

The words hit harder than the rejection itself.

Lyra laughed bitterly.

"Necessary?" she echoed. "Is that what I was to you? A sacrifice?"

His silence answered her.

That hurt more than anything.

Cassian shifted slightly in front of her, like he was ready to step in.

But Lyra stepped forward instead.

Past him.

Into the open.

Both men tensed immediately.

"Lyra," Cassian warned.

"Stay back," she said quietly.

Her eyes never left Kael.

"If you take one more step toward me," she continued, her voice shaking but firm, "I will run."

Kael stilled.

Not because he couldn't move.

Because he didn't want her to.

"You won't get far," he said.

"Then I'll die trying."

The words hung between them.

Heavy.

Real.

Something in Kael's expression cracked.

Just for a second.

"You're carrying my child," he said.

Lyra's breath hitched.

There it was.

The truth.

Out in the open.

"I know," she whispered.

"Then you understand why you can't leave."

Her chest tightened.

"Can't?" she repeated.

Kael stepped closer.

Slow.

Measured.

Like approaching something fragile.

"You're mine," he said. "Both of you."

Something inside her snapped.

"No," she said.

The word came out stronger than she expected.

"I'm not yours," she continued, her voice rising. "You lost that right the moment you rejected me."

Kael's eyes flashed.

"And yet," he said, his voice dropping dangerously low, "you're still carrying my heir."

Lyra flinched.

That word again.

Heir.

Not child.

Not baby.

Something colder.

Something political.

Cassian's voice cut in, sharp as a blade.

"She's not an object you can claim, Kael."

Kael's gaze snapped to him.

"And you think she belongs to you?"

Cassian didn't hesitate.

"I think she deserves a choice."

The tension exploded.

The wolves behind Kael shifted, growls rumbling low in their chests.

Cassian's presence darkened further.

The ground beneath their feet seemed to vibrate.

Lyra's pulse spiked.

This was it.

This was the moment everything would fall apart.

"Last chance," Kael said, his voice like steel. "Come with me."

Lyra's throat tightened.

Her heart screamed at her to run.

To hide.

To escape.

But something else rose up instead.

Something new.

Something stronger.

"I choose," she said slowly, "to walk away."

Silence.

Then.

Everything shattered.

Kael moved.

Faster than she could see.

One second he was across the clearing.

The next, he was right in front of her.

Lyra gasped.

Before she could react, his hand wrapped around her wrist.

Heat exploded where he touched her.

The broken bond.

It sparked.

Painfully.

Wildly.

Her breath hitched.

"Let go!" she cried, trying to pull away.

But his grip tightened.

"You're not leaving," he said, his voice low and final.

Cassian moved instantly.

His hand shot out, grabbing Kael's arm.

"Take your hand off her."

The air cracked.

Power clashed.

Lyra felt it like a physical force two dominant Alphas colliding.

It was suffocating.

Terrifying.

Unbearable.

"Or what?" Kael challenged.

Cassian's eyes darkened.

"Or I remind you," he said softly, "why you should be afraid of me."

For a split second.

Something flickered in Kael's expression.

Recognition.

Then.

He attacked.

The world exploded into motion.

Kael released Lyra but only to strike.

Cassian met him head-on.

The impact shook the ground.

Lyra stumbled back, her heart racing as the two most dangerous men she had ever known collided like storms.

Blow after blow.

Power against power.

Neither holding back.

Neither willing to lose.

The wolves surged forward.

But something stopped them.

A force.

Invisible.

Pressing.

Lyra felt it building inside her.

Hot.

Unstable.

Her breath came faster.

Her vision blurred.

"What… is happening…?" she whispered.

The ground beneath her feet cracked.

A pulse of energy shot through her body.

Sharp.

Violent.

Both Kael and Cassian froze mid-fight.

Their heads snapped toward her.

"Lyra" Cassian started.

Too late.

The power exploded.

A wave of energy burst from her body, slamming into everything around her.

Trees bent.

Wolves were thrown back.

Even Kael and Cassian were forced apart.

Lyra screamed.

It hurt.

It burned.

It felt like something inside her was tearing its way out.

Her knees buckled.

She collapsed.

But strong arms caught her before she hit the ground.

Kael.

Her breath stuttered.

"No…" she whispered weakly.

But she didn't have the strength to push him away.

His grip was firm.

Protective.

Possessive.

"Easy," he murmured, his voice softer now. "I've got you."

Cassian stood a few feet away, watching them.

His expression had changed.

The calm was gone.

Replaced by something darker.

Something calculating.

"She's awakening," he said.

Kael's arms tightened around her.

"Awakening to what?"

Cassian's gaze dropped to Lyra.

Then to her stomach.

"To what she really is."

Lyra's head spun.

"I don't understand…"

Cassian took a step closer.

"Your bloodline," he said. "It's reacting."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"What bloodline?"

Cassian smiled faintly.

"That's the problem," he said.

"You don't know who you rejected."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kael's gaze snapped back to Lyra.

Searching.

Demanding.

"What is he talking about?" he asked.

Lyra shook her head weakly.

"I don't."

But the pain surged again.

Stronger this time.

Her body arched.

A sharp cry tore from her lips.

Kael's grip tightened.

"Lyra!"

Cassian's expression darkened further.

"It's starting sooner than I expected."

Kael looked up sharply.

"Starting what?"

Cassian met his gaze.

And for the first time.

There was no amusement in his eyes.

"Her transformation."

The word hit like a bomb.

Lyra's breath caught.

Transformation?

No.

That wasn't possible.

She was.

"I'm not" she gasped.

But her voice broke.

Because deep inside.

Something was changing.

Something waking up.

Something that didn't feel like the omega she had always been.

Her wolf stirred.

Stronger.

Different.

Terrifying.

Kael felt it too.

She saw it in his eyes.

The shift.

The realization.

"You're not an omega," he said slowly.

Cassian's smile returned.

Cold.

Satisfied.

"No," he said.

"She never was."

Lyra's heart slammed violently against her ribs.

Everything was spinning.

Everything was wrong.

And then.

Cassian said the words that changed everything.

"If she completes the transformation," he said quietly, "she won't belong to any pack anymore."

Kael's grip tightened dangerously.

"What does that mean?"

Cassian's eyes gleamed.

"It means," he said, "you won't be able to control her."

Silence.

Then.

Lyra screamed again as another wave of power tore through her.

The ground split beneath them.

The air howled.

And Kael.

Kael looked down at her like he was seeing her for the first time.

Not as his rejected mate.

Not as an omega.

But as something else.

Something powerful.

Something dangerous.

Something he might not be able to keep.

And for the first time.

Alpha King Kael Draven looked afraid.
