Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE:RHE WOMAN WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN QUEEN.

Morning came like a punishment.

Lyra didn't remember falling asleep.

One moment she had been standing in that cold, suffocating room… the next, she was waking up alone in a bed that felt far too big for her.

Too empty.

Too quiet.

She stared at the ceiling, her chest tight.

For a second—just a second—she hoped everything had been a nightmare.

But the dull ache in her heart reminded her.

It was real.

Every painful moment.

Every word.

Every rejection.

Her fingers clenched into the sheets as she forced herself to sit up.

"You're the Luna now," she whispered to herself.

The words felt foreign.

Heavy.

Unreal.

A knock came at the door.

"Enter," she said, her voice softer than she intended.

Two maids stepped in, bowing slightly.

"Your Grace," one of them said. "The Alpha King requests your presence at the morning court."

Lyra froze.

Morning court?

Already?

She swallowed hard. "I'll be there."

The palace corridors felt colder in daylight.

Guards lined the walls. Servants moved quickly, their eyes lowering the moment she passed.

But Lyra noticed it.

The whispers.

Always the whispers.

"That's her…"

"The rejected mate…"

"How did she become Luna?"

Each word chipped away at her already fragile heart.

But she kept walking.

Head high.

Back straight.

Even if she was breaking inside.

The throne room doors opened.

And everything changed.

The room was filled with nobles, generals, and elders—far more than the night before. Conversations buzzed through the air, but the moment Lyra stepped in…

Silence fell.

All eyes turned to her.

Judging.

Measuring.

Doubting.

Her steps slowed—but she didn't stop.

At the far end of the room sat Kael Draven on his throne, dressed in dark royal attire, his expression as unreadable as ever.

Power radiated from him.

Cold.

Dominant.

Unshaken.

Their eyes met for a brief moment.

Then he looked away.

Like she didn't matter.

The sting hit instantly.

Before she could react—

A voice cut through the silence.

"Well… this is disappointing."

The tone was soft.

Elegant.

But laced with poison.

Lyra turned.

And that's when she saw her.

Selene.

She stood near the center of the hall, dressed in a stunning crimson gown that hugged her figure perfectly. Her silver-blonde hair fell like silk down her back, and her confident smile made it clear—

She belonged here.

More than Lyra ever could.

"Your Majesty," Selene said, bowing slightly toward Kael before her gaze shifted back to Lyra. "Is this truly the Luna of our kingdom?"

A ripple of murmurs spread across the room.

Lyra's chest tightened.

Selene took a slow step forward, her eyes scanning Lyra from head to toe.

Unimpressed.

"I must say…" she continued lightly, "I expected someone… stronger."

A few nobles chuckled.

Quietly.

But loud enough.

Lyra felt the humiliation rise again—but this time…

Something else rose with it.

Anger.

She straightened.

"I didn't realize expectations were part of the ceremony," Lyra replied calmly.

The room went still.

Selene's smile faltered—just slightly.

"Oh?" she said. "So you can speak."

Lyra met her gaze directly.

"I only speak when it matters."

A pause.

Then—

A few surprised murmurs.

Selene's eyes narrowed.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

She took another step closer.

"Tell me," Selene said softly, her voice dropping just enough to sound intimate—but loud enough for everyone to hear. "Do you even understand what it means to be Luna?"

Lyra didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was—

No.

She didn't.

But she wasn't about to admit that.

"I understand enough," she said.

Selene tilted her head.

"Do you?" she murmured.

Then her gaze flicked briefly toward Kael.

"And yet… the Alpha King himself rejected you."

The words hit like a slap.

The room tensed.

Everyone was watching now.

Waiting.

Lyra's heart pounded violently—but she forced herself to stay still.

If she broke here…

She would lose everything.

"Last I checked," Lyra said slowly, "I'm still standing here as Luna."

A sharp silence followed.

Selene's smile faded completely.

For the first time, there was no elegance in her expression.

Only irritation.

"You think a title makes you worthy?" Selene asked coldly.

"No," Lyra replied.

Then, after a brief pause—

"But it makes me legitimate."

The word echoed.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

A few nobles exchanged glances.

Selene's eyes flashed with anger.

"You're bold for someone who has nothing," she said.

Lyra's fingers curled slightly.

"I have enough," she replied quietly.

"And what is that?"

Lyra held her gaze.

"A reason to stay."

The tension snapped.

Selene stepped forward suddenly—

"Enough."

Kael's voice cut through the room like a blade.

Silence fell instantly.

Selene froze.

Slowly, she turned toward him.

"My King," she said, her tone softening instantly. "I was only—"

"I didn't ask," Kael interrupted.

His gaze was cold.

Sharp.

Authoritative.

Selene's lips pressed together, but she stepped back.

"As you wish."

The room remained silent.

Kael's eyes shifted briefly toward Lyra.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

Enough for everyone to see.

Enough for Selene to notice.

Something dangerous flickered in her expression.

Something jealous.

Possessive.

Threatening.

The rest of the court passed in a blur.

Lyra barely heard the discussions.

Her mind replayed everything.

Selene's words.

The whispers.

Kael's silence.

But most of all—

That brief moment when he had looked at her.

As the court ended, people began to leave.

Lyra turned quickly, hoping to escape before anyone else could approach her.

But—

A hand caught her arm.

She froze.

Slowly… she turned.

Kael stood behind her.

Too close.

Again.

Her heart betrayed her instantly, pounding against her chest.

"What?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

His gaze lingered on her face.

Studying.

Searching.

"You spoke boldly," he said.

Lyra frowned slightly.

"I defended myself."

"Against Selene."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"That was unwise."

Her chest tightened.

"Why?" she asked.

"Because she's dangerous."

Lyra held his gaze.

"So am I."

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

Silence.

Then—

Something changed.

Kael stepped closer.

Closer.

Until there was barely any space left between them.

Lyra's breath caught.

"You don't know what you're dealing with," he said softly.

"Neither do you," she replied.

Their eyes locked.

The tension between them surged again.

Stronger.

Hotter.

Unstable.

For a moment—

It felt like something might happen.

Something dangerous.

Something real.

Then—

Kael stepped back.

Just like that.

The moment broke.

"You'll learn," he said.

And then he walked away.

Leaving her standing there.

Confused.

Angry.

And somehow…

Still drawn to him.
