Chapter 4 - The In-Laws and Awkwardness

The next few hours were a blur of awkward hellos, forced congratulations, and way too much champagne. Alex met Jamie's parents, who seemed nice but confused. His mom kept patting Alex's hand, saying, "We're so happy to have you in the family, dear."

Yeah, if only she'd known it was a beachside tequila-fueled decision.

Max lingered around Alex, asking about her job, her family, and if she "needed saving from this wild marriage." Ugh, charming Max.

Meanwhile, Mia was glued to Jamie's side, playing "supportive best friend" to the hons. Alex knew Mia – she was plotting something.

As they posed for a "family photo" (Max insisted on a "funny one"), Alex caught Jamie's eye. He mugged for the camera, making her laugh. For a split second, the chaos faded.

But then Max whispered to her, "You okay? Need an out?" His tone was light, but his eyes lingered.

Mia swooped in. "Max, stop bothering the bride."

The air thickened. Jamie looked between them, clensing.

Alex laughed it off. "Just getting the family drama started!"

Dinner followed – awkward speeches, more champagne, and Jamie's uncle asking, "So, kids, when's the baby?"

As the night wound down, Alex leaned to Jamie, "We need to talk."

Jamie's grin faltered. "Uh oh."
