Chapter 1 - The Blue Screen

Kael was used to not being seen.

He didn't really stand out, if you know what I mean. The guy had a body, just like anyone else – two arms, two legs, and a face. But it was a face that people tended to look away from, rather than really look at.

When he walked through the crowded stalls in Oakhaven, he kind of blended in, like a ghost. Nobody noticed him, nobody said hello. He just weaved in and out of the merchants and shoppers without drawing any attention to himself.

That was the life of a Nameless one.

In the Kingdom of Aethel, who you were depended on your family. The noble families – like the Vale, Ashford, and Ember – were known for having many generations of people with special powers. They could make fire appear with just a touch of their fingers. Lightning would strike when they wanted it to. They could even talk to the wind, and it would carry their messages across the battlefield. These families were really good at using the elements – fire, lightning, and wind – to help them in battles and other things. The people in these families were considered very important and powerful because of their abilities.

The villagers didn't know much about magic, but they had their own ways. Some were blacksmiths, others were farmers or traders. They all had a place to call home, where they could live and work together.

Kael had nothing.

No family. No magic. No last name.

All he had was a thin blanket, a small corner behind the tanner's shop to call his own, and a hunger that had finally stopped gnawing at him after two days.

At seventeen, he'd buried fifteen years of feeling sorry for himself. The orphanage matron's words still rang in his ears:

"You're nothing, just a boy. No family to claim, no bloodline to speak of, and no magic to back you up. Remember that."

He remembered.

Every time a guard threw him headfirst into the mud, he remembered. Every time the kids pelted him with stones because he was "the Nameless," he remembered. Every time a merchant called him a stray dog, he remembered.

But somehow, he made it through. Kael survived against all odds.

---

Today, however, was different.

When he woke, he knew that someone was watching him – he felt it in a strange tingling at the back of his neck. Like someone was spying on him. But when he peered into the alley, no one was there.

Just hunger playing tricks on my mind.

He rose from the ground, stretched his stiff body, then headed toward the eastern gate. The forest behind Oakhaven was off-limits for commoners – noble hunting grounds, they called it. But Kael had also learned that the best places to find food were often forbidden.

Mushrooms. Wild berries. Sometimes a rabbit if he was lucky.

He slipped through a gap in the ancient stone wall and entered the woods.

The trees here were towering, their branches forming a canopy that softened the morning sun into golden beams. Birds called to each other. A squirrel scurried across his path.

Kael walked further, scanning the ground for anything edible.

Then he heard it.

A whimper.

Soft. Weak. Coming from behind a large oak tree.

Kael froze. Every instinct told him to run. Animals that whimper are either sick or injured – or bait for something larger.

But his feet moved anyway.

He peeked around the tree.

A creature lay on the moss-covered earth. About the size of a large dog, with silver fur that gleamed even though it was matted with dried blood. Its leg was bent at an unnatural angle – broken. Its chest rose and fell in shallow, painful breaths.

From old illustrations he had once found in a discarded book, Kael knew what it was.

A Moon Wolf.

Rare. Magical. And according to the book, nearly extinct.

The wolf's amber eyes found Kael. No growl. No bared teeth. Just… watching. Waiting.

It's dying.

Kael should have just walked away. A Nameless boy like him had no business touching a magical beast. If the nobles found out, they wouldn't just punish him – they'd make him disappear.

But the wolf's eyes reminded him of something.

His own reflection in a rain puddle. Lonely. Hurt. Abandoned.

"Hey," he whispered, slowly crouching down. "I'm not going to hurt you."

The wolf didn't move.

Kael reached out his hand – slowly, carefully. His fingers touched the wolf's fur. It was softer than anything he had ever felt in his life.

And then the world exploded into light.

---

BZZZZT.

A blue screen flashed in front of his eyes.

Not far away. Not a trick of the light. It was there, floating in midair, radiating an impossible brightness that made the forest seem dim by comparison.

Kael stumbled backward, his heart pounding.

What—

The screen showed words:

```
Kael stared.
Chosen? Chosen for what?
He looked at the wolf. The beast was still lying there, but its breathing seemed more steady. And its amber eyes… were they glowing?
A second screen appeared:
Kael's hands were shaking.
This wasn't magic. He had seen magic before – nobles showing off their elemental powers during festivals. Fireworks made of flame. Ice sculptures that never melted.
This was… different. This was his. A screen only he could see. A system that called him "User" and offered him a quest.
Is this real?
He reached out and touched [YES].
Hint: The wolf needs food and shelter. Your current resources: NONE.
Good luck, User.
```

Kael almost laughed. No food. No shelter. And I'm supposed to heal a magical wolf?

But the wolf was still looking at him. Trusting him.

I've been in tough spots before. I've always managed to get by with barely anything. I can handle this.

---

He worked quickly.

First, he gathered soft moss and ferns to make a makeshift bed. Carefully, he slid the moss under the wolf's body, lifting it just enough to relieve pressure from its broken leg.

The wolf whimpered but didn't bite.

"Shh. I know. It hurts."

Kael had fixed his own broken finger before – a brick had fallen on it when he was just twelve. He remembered crying for hours. But back then, there was no one around to help him.

Now he was the one helping.

He found a straight branch and tore strips from his already-torn shirt to make a splint. His hands were clumsy, but he remembered watching a healer do this once in the market.

When he finished, the wolf's leg was bound. Not perfect. But definitely better than before.

The wolf licked his hand.

Kael exhaled. It's working.

But the wolf needed food. And Kael had none.

He stood up. "Stay here. I'll be back."

The wolf's amber eyes followed him as he walked away.

---

He searched the forest for an hour.

Berries. A few edible mushrooms. And – luck – a shallow stream where he caught a small fish with his bare hands.

Not a feast. But enough.

When he returned, the wolf was still there. Still alive.

Kael fed it small pieces of fish and crushed berries. The wolf ate weakly but eagerly. When it finished, it rested its head on Kael's lap.

A warmth spread through his chest.

Not from the sun. Something else.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

He looked down at the wolf sleeping on his lap. Its breathing was steady now. Its fur had started to regain its silver shimmer.

For the first time in seventeen years, Kael felt like he wasn't alone.

Yes, he thought. Continue.

Kael read the warning twice.

Dangerous enemies.

Of course. Nothing good ever came without a price.

But as he looked at the sleeping wolf, he made a decision.

He was still Nameless. Still magicless. Still nobody.

But now he had a system. And a wolf. And a quest.

Let them come.

He smiled – the first real smile in years.
