Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Descent

Art stopped the dune buggy.

Dust kicked up around the wheels.

The cold wasteland surrounded them.

She stepped out, looking at the central district.

Kane stayed seated.

His gaze held.

Empty.

Art inspected the city, her veins surging with white light.

There...

She continued watching.

...those trucks.

The white light faded as she turned to Kane.

"Kane, let's move."

Kane's body moved.

Slow.

Art slid down the rocky mountain.

Kane stayed still.

Observing the city.

A moment passed.

He followed.

Art raised her hand to stop, pointing at the wrist panel.

"Press the cloaking."

Kane's eyes lowered.

Art pressed a button.

Her silhouette was cloaked.

He copied.

Trucks were stopped at the eastern gate.

Art moved onto the back of one, crouching between canisters of void cell fluid.

Kane climbed on shortly after.

His hand raised, touching a canister.

A crack shifted.

Within.

The air shifted.

Distorted.

Art's ears twitched, feeling something strange around Kane.

She moved close to him, whispering.

"Kane, focus."

Kane's hand lowered.

His body faced her.

"...Right."

The truck engine roared, as it moved through the city.

Kane's head lifted slightly.

Towards the central clock tower.

Art closed her eyes.

She placed her hand on the truck bed as her veins began to glow white.

Surroundings pulsed black and white.

Each footstep rippled towards her.

Every turning gear revealed to her.

Almost there.

The truck stopped at the northern gate.

Art stayed in position, observing the path beyond the gate.

Kane's focus remained on the tower.

After inspection, the truck moved forward.

The path dropped into a tunnel.

Fluorescent light shone above them as engines echoed around them.

The truck continued to descend until stopping at the sound of gears turning.

A metal door quaked the ground from opening.

Art took note of the surroundings.

Guards and workers...

The truck pulled inside, stopping on a loading platform.

...There.

A pump engaged, raising the platform.

Art's posture straightened as she signaled with her fingers to follow.

Art jumped onto a metal platform.

Kane paused.

Then he jumped.

Art deactivated her cloak, looking at Kane.

"Let's move."

He pressed his wrist.

The cloak disabled.

Art started walking.

Kane continued behind her.

They came upon a dead end.

Art placed her hand on the wall, searching for a pathway.

A small ripple pulsed.

Her hand lowered, as she looked up at a vent.

Art leaped upward, pulling the grate open.

It creaked back and forth in rhythm.

She reached her hand down.

Kane glanced at it.

His arm reached.

After helping Kane up, they started crawling through different ventilation corridors.

Cobwebs surrounded them.

Cold air drifted past them.

Art paused, punching a vent open.

The grate blackened against a metal floor.

A moment later, Art dropped down, signaling Kane to follow.

Their footsteps filled the long metal hallway.

Void cell fluid bubbled in the clear tubes around them.

A green hue guided them.

Art stopped at an intersection.

Placing her hand on the wall.

Her veins began to flicker white.

Three guards.

She pulled a pistol.

Screwed on a suppressor.

"Stay here."

Kane stopped.

Still.

Art dashed around the corner.

She aimed.

Accurate.

Three suppressed shots.

Fast.

The guards fell.

Wounded in the same place.

Blood pooled around the head.

Art unscrewed the suppressor.

Holstering her handgun, she turned to Kane.

"It's safe now."

A slight pause.

Footsteps started to get closer.

Art exhaled, turning around.

She continued forward.

Towards the green light.

Corridors of metal pipes and pumps were endless.

Mechanical humming sounded around them.

The green light came into view.

Art stopped walking.

Her eyes fixed ahead.

This is...
