Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 12: ALMOST LOVE

The tension had been building for days.

Weeks, even.

And now—

It was unbearable.

"Stop looking at me like that," Amara said softly.

They were standing too close again.

Always too close.

"Like what?" Adrian asked.

"Like you're trying to figure me out."

"I already have."

Her breath caught.

"You haven't."

"I have."

He stepped closer.

Closing the distance.

Completely.

"You're strong," he said quietly. "But you're tired."

Her chest tightened.

"You don't know that."

"I do."

His hand lifted—

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was giving her time to pull away.

She didn't.

His fingers brushed against her cheek.

Gentle.

Warm.

Everything she didn't expect from him.

Everything she didn't know she needed.

"Adrian…" she whispered.

But it didn't sound like a warning.

It sounded like surrender.

His thumb traced lightly against her skin.

And then—

His gaze dropped to her lips.

Her breath hitched.

This was it.

The moment.

The line they couldn't uncross.

"Tell me to stop," he said again.

Just like before.

But this time—

His voice was softer.

More vulnerable.

She should.

She had to.

But instead—

She shook her head.

Barely.

Almost nothing.

But enough.

Adrian leaned in.

Slowly.

Giving her time.

Giving her a chance.

But she didn't move.

Didn't pull away.

Didn't stop him.

And just as their lips were about to meet—

A phone rang.

Loud.

Sharp.

Breaking everything.

They froze.

Reality crashing back in.

Amara stepped back quickly, her heart racing.

"This is a mistake," she whispered.

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

Because he didn't agree.

But he didn't say that.

Not yet.
