Chapter 2 - Feeling Rejected!

Aria's POV

I paid the taxi driver, grabbed my bag, and stepped out onto the sidewalk. The imposing skyscraper loomed before me, its sleek glass façade reflecting the morning sun. Ashford Holdings' logo, listed above the entrance, is a symbol of prestige and success.

This isn't the only Ashford family company, but this is the MAIN company.

I took a deep breath, smoothed my skirt and adjusted my bag strap. Time to make a good impression.

But as I mistakenly diverted my eyes, I saw him. I saw the almighty Clark Ashford, and I felt as if my breath seized for a moment. I had seen him before on TV but looking at him almost up close, he looked awfully familiar.

He looked so perfect with his perfectly styled jet-black hair and his piercing ice blue eyes that commanded attention and power. And his tailored suit speaks nothing more than POWER!

"Oh! Sh**t Aria. You're going to be late," I said as I mentally slapped myself.

As I entered the lobby, I was greeted by a poised receptionist who asked for my name and purpose. I gave her my details, and she nodded, typing away on her computer.

"Aria, you're here for the secretary position? Please take a seat, you are quite late and as far as I know Ms. Thompson doesn't tolerate lateness." She finally said while lifting her face up from her computer.

I nodded, taking a seat in the plush waiting area with all those who came for the interview. My eyes scanned the room, taking in the modern decor and the bustling atmosphere.

This was it. This was my chance.

As I looked at those who came for the interview and how poised they look I was scared for a while.

Then..Naomi's words of encouragement echoed in my mind: "You've got this, Aria! You're smart, capable, and stunning. Knock 'em dead!"

I smiled, feeling a surge of confidence. I was ready for this. Cause obviously I prepared hard for this.

I watched as the applicants came out of the interview room with a sulking face, I didn't want to think much of it.

"I have my hopes high" I told myself. As I waited, I couldn't help but think about how much this job meant to me.

It was more than just a job; it was a chance to provide for my family, to give them a better life. My parents had sacrificed so much for me over the past ten years, and I wanted to repay them.

I thought about my mom and dad, who had worked multiple jobs to put food on the table and pay my school fees since my dad's company became bankrupt.

We all knew that it didn't happen naturally, someone was behind it. But we couldn't point the person out. I thought about Naomi, who had been my rock through all the ups and downs.

I took a deep breath, feeling a surge of determination. I wasn't going to let this setback discourage me. I was going to make this work.

Just as I was bringing myself back to reality, I saw Ms Thompson- the woman who was meant to interview me; walking out of the office. I then looked around and found out that I was the only one remaining. I grabbed my purse and ran towards her as she tried locking the door, to LEAVE!

My heart sank.

Late? I was only 15 minutes late. Surely that wasn't a deal-breaker?

I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as the lady turned to leave.

"Wait," I said, while approaching her, trying to keep my voice steady.

"I have an appointment with you Ms. Thompson. Can we please have the interview?"

Ms Thompson appeared to be looking apologetic, but also firm.

"Miss Aria, right? I think it's best if we reschedule for another time. We don't typically accommodate late arrivals.

"I felt a surge of frustration. But I was only 15 minutes late," I said, trying to keep my voice level.

"I've come a long way for this interview and the next time maybe NEVER."

Ms Thompson's expression didn't change.

"I'm afraid it's not just about the time, Aria. It's about respect for our time and our process. I'm not comfortable proceeding with the interview today, as I said maybe next time.

"I felt a lump form in my throat as I realised she was serious. But...but this is my dream job," I stammered, feeling tears pring to my eyes.

Ms Thompson's expression softened slightly, but she remained firm. "I'm sorry, Aria. I wish you the best of luck in your job search.

"I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself. This wasn't the end of the world. I would find another job, another opportunity. But as I turned to leave, I felt a surge of anger.

Why was I being penalised for something so minor?

I had done everything right, prepared everything, and this was the result?

I will not leave here till I'm attended to, I won't leave without an interview. Then a buzz came from my bag, who the f*ck is calling me now?

As I took out my phone and looked at the caller's ID, I saw that it was Naomi.

I sighed a sigh of relief. I told Naomi about the new development and as expected…..

"Who the h*ll does she think she is"

"Does she know how hard you prepared for this interview? I feel like humans are starting to lose their compassion. Is she not aware of the traffic that took place around the company" she ranted and as usual I kept mute, 'cause I know that if I said anything she may come here.

Yes!

That is the strength of Naomi.

She is ready to. leave her workplace to set this lady's head right.

"It's all okay" I said as I tried calming her over the phone, but she wasn't having it.

"It's all okay," I said again, trying to calm Naomi down, but she wasn't having any of it at all.
