Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Gambler’s Ghost

The air in Suite 402 was thick enough to chew. It smelled of Cuban tobacco, expensive cognac, and the cold, metallic scent of desperation. Tobi sat at the edge of the mahogany table, his ₦1,000,000 chip looking like a lonely soldier against the mountains of gold and blue chips stacked in front of the other players.

To his left was Chief Omotola, a man whose neck was hidden behind three thick gold chains. To his right, a woman named Vanessa, who sipped champagne and looked at Tobi as if he were a bug she was waiting to crush.

"The buy-in is a million, boy," Chief Omotola rumbled, his voice like grinding stones. "But the raises? They'll cost you your soul. You sure you didn't take a wrong turn looking for the kitchen?"

Tobi didn't blink. He felt the Gambler's Sight buzzing behind his retinas.

System, activate.

[Notice: Gambler's Sight (Active) — Duration: 30 Minutes]

[Feature: X-Ray Card Mapping and Pulse Detection.]

Suddenly, the world turned into a wireframe of data. Tobi could see the ink through the back of the cards as the dealer shuffled. He could see the structural integrity of the table. But most importantly, he could see the glowing red pulse in Chief Omotola's neck.

[Target: Chief Omotola]

[Heart Rate: 110 BPM (Bluffing)]

[Hand: Pair of Jacks]

[Target: Vanessa]

[Heart Rate: 72 BPM (Confident)]

[Hand: Three of a Kind — Aces]

Tobi looked at his own hand. A 2 and a 7 of different suits. The worst hand in the game.

"I'm in," Tobi said, pushing his million-naira chip into the center.

The dealer flipped the first three cards: An Ace, a Jack, and a 7.

Vanessa smiled, a predatory curve of her lips. She pushed a stack of blue chips forward. "Five million."

The room went silent. The observers behind the velvet rope whispered. Five million Naira was enough to buy a house in some parts of Lagos, and she had tossed it out like it was pocket change.

Chief Omotola sweated. He looked at his Jacks. He looked at the Ace on the table. "I'm out," he growled, throwing his cards down.

All eyes turned to Tobi.

"Well?" Vanessa prompted, swirling her champagne. "The 'Delivery Boy' looks like he's lost his voice. Fold and go back to your moped, kid."

Tobi leaned back. He saw the next two cards the dealer was going to flip. They were both 7s. If he stayed in, he would have four 7s—a hand that would crush Vanessa's three Aces.

"I don't have five million," Tobi said.

Vanessa laughed. "Then get off the table."

"I don't have five million in chips," Tobi corrected. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the signed, unfinalized contract for SwiftWheel Logistics that Jude Enahoro had given him in the lobby. "But I have the controlling interest in a logistics firm worth ₦85,000,000. I'll put the deed on the table."

The room gasped. Even the guards at the door leaned in.

"You're insane," Vanessa whispered, her composure breaking. "You're betting a whole company on a 2 and a 7?"

"I'm betting on the fact that you think I'm afraid," Tobi said.

[Skill Triggered: Authority Aura (Level 1)]

The air in the room suddenly grew heavy. The lights seemed to dim, focusing entirely on Tobi. To the other players, he no longer looked like a kid in a suit. He looked like an ancient titan, someone who had seen empires rise and fall.

Vanessa's hand trembled. Her heart rate spiked to 140 BPM.

"I... I call," she said, her voice high and thin.

The dealer, hands shaking, flipped the fourth card. A 7.

The dealer flipped the fifth card. Another 7.

"Four of a kind," Tobi said, his voice flat and emotionless. He turned his cards over. "Sevens."

The silence was absolute. Vanessa's glass shattered on the floor. Chief Omotola stood up so fast his chair flipped over.

"Impossible!" Vanessa screamed. "That's a one-in-a-million draw! You cheated!"

Tobi stood up and began raking the mountain of chips toward him. [Price-Tag Eye] calculated the total instantly.

[Total Winnings: ₦22,500,000]

Tobi looked at the guards who were moving toward him. "If I cheated, the cameras would have seen it. If you touch me, I'll buy this hotel and have you arrested for assault before the sun rises."

The guards hesitated. The Authority Aura was too strong. They felt an instinctual need to obey him.

Tobi scooped his winnings into a briefcase provided by the cage and walked out. He didn't look back. He didn't celebrate. He had work to do.

He found Jude Enahoro still at the bar, staring at a half-empty glass. The man looked like he was waiting for a funeral.

Tobi slammed the briefcase onto the bar and popped the latches. The stacks of ₦1,000 notes were bundled in neat, terrifying rows.

"Fifteen million," Tobi said. "Count it."

Jude's eyes nearly popped out of his head. "You... you actually did it? In less than an hour?"

"The debt is cleared. The company is ours," Tobi said. "I want every bike on the road by 6:00 AM. I want the logos changed. No more 'SwiftWheel.' From now on, we are 'Apex Logistics'."

[Current Balance: ₦58,804,500.00]

Tobi felt a surge of power that nearly knocked him off his feet. Fifty million Naira. He was no longer just a "rich kid." He was a multi-millionaire with a fleet of fifty bikes and five vans.

He pulled out his phone. It was 11:45 PM. He had one more call to make.

He dialed Mr. Okeke. The man picked up on the first ring, sounding breathless. "Tobi! You brat! The police are at the depot! I've told them everything! You're going to jail for life!"

"Mr. Okeke," Tobi said, walking out toward the waiting Range Rover. "Check your email. I just sent you a formal offer to buy your depot for ₦5 million. It's a generous offer, considering I'm going to put you out of business by noon tomorrow anyway."

"Five million? My depot is worth twenty!"

"It was worth twenty," Tobi said, climbing into the car. "But as of five minutes ago, I own SwiftWheel. I've already contacted your three biggest clients—the pharmacy, the supermarket, and the law firm. I offered them half your delivery rate for the next six months. They've already signed with Apex."

There was a long, horrifying silence on the other end of the line. Tobi could hear Okeke's heavy breathing, followed by the sound of something breaking.

"You... you destroyed me," Okeke whispered. "In one night? How?"

"You told me I was worth nothing, remember?" Tobi said. "I just decided to prove you wrong. The offer for 5 million expires at dawn. After that, I'll just wait for the bank to kick you out and buy the building for 1 million at auction. Your choice."

Tobi hung up.
