Chapter 7 - The Truth Hurts

"Maya…" he started, walking closer.

She stood up suddenly, her legs shaking but her voice sharp. "Don't take another step."

He froze in place. "Maya, please… let me explain."

She laughed bitterly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Explain? What are you going to explain, Daniel? That you've been lying to me for years? That you let another woman—your ex—live in our home and call my son hers behind my back?"

Daniel's eyes widened. "No, Maya, it's not like that. You misunderstood—"

"I heard everything!" she snapped. "I stood right behind that door and listened to you tell her to be patient, that I was getting suspicious. I heard her say she gave you ten years of her life. I heard her say—Jamie's her son."

Daniel rubbed his hands over his face, trying to stay calm. "Maya, please, you weren't supposed to hear it like that. Things… got complicated."

"Complicated?" Maya's voice cracked. "You let me raise her child for five years, Daniel. You made me think Jamie was mine!"

At that moment, the door slowly opened again, and Lena stepped inside. Her eyes were puffy from crying, her shoulders tense. She looked at Maya, guilt all over her face.

"Maya…" she whispered, her voice breaking. "I'm so sorry. I never wanted this to happen."

Maya's eyes narrowed. "Don't. Don't say sorry like it means anything."

Lena's lips trembled. "I need to tell you the truth. Years ago… there was a mix-up at the hospital. A nurse mistakenly swapped our babies. You… you took my son home. And I raised yours."

Maya froze. Her world went silent.

"I didn't know at first," Lena continued. "Not until a few years later, when I started noticing things. But by then, it was already too late. I… I didn't want to take him away from you. But it hurt, Maya. It hurt so much watching him call you 'Mom' when I knew…"

Maya's voice came out like a whisper. "Then where is my son?"

Lena looked down at the floor, more tears falling. "I… I lost him."

Maya's chest tightened.

"I lost him, Maya," Lena sobbed. He had gone missing. I've searched for years, but I haven't been able to find him. I thought if I stayed close to your family, maybe… maybe I could hold on to the only part of him I had left."

Maya stumbled backward, her back hitting the wall. "You… lost child?" she whispered.

"I didn't mean to," Lena cried. "I've lived every day in guilt. That's why I came back. That's why I stayed. I thought I could make up for it somehow."

Daniel finally spoke again. "It was the nurse's fault, Maya. None of this was Lena's doing."

Maya turned toward him slowly. "You're defending her?"

"She didn't mean to—"

"I don't care what she meant!" Maya shouted. "That child was mine, Daniel! Mine! I carried him for ten months. I gave birth to him. And now he's gone, and you're standing here defending her?"

"She's hurting too," Daniel said quietly.

Maya stared at him like she didn't recognize the man in front of her. "And what about me? Am I not allowed to hurt? Do I not matter?"

Daniel moved closer. "You raised a good boy. He still loves you, Maya."

Maya laughed again, bitter and hollow. "Jamie doesn't even call me 'Mom' anymore. He runs to her. He wants her to be his mother. And now I know why. Because she is."

Silence settled between them for a long moment.

Daniel sighed. "We can still fix this. We'll keep looking for your biological child. And Jamie we raised—he loves you. Think of him as your own—"

"No," Maya said firmly. Her voice was stronger now, like steel. "I gave that Jamie my everything. I loved him as if he were mine. But now I know. And no matter how much I try, I can't undo the pain of knowing I lost my son… because of you two."

Daniel tried to hold her hands, but she pulled away.

"You don't understand what you've done to me," she whispered. "You let me live a lie. You watched me pour love into a child that wasn't mine while my real son is out there—alone. Or worse. And the whole time, you knew."

Daniel opened his mouth to speak, but Maya shook her head.

"I don't want to hear it," she said, her voice low. "I'm tired. I'm broken. And I've had enough."

Lena stepped forward again. "Maya, please—"

"No," Maya said. "Don't speak to me. You had a choice. You could've told me the truth from the beginning. Instead, you played the victim while I raised your child."

Maya turned back to Daniel. Her eyes were fierce now, filled with pain but also something else—clarity.

"I want a divorce."

Daniel stared at her, stunned. "Maya… you don't mean that."

"I do," she said without blinking. "I don't want to share a roof with someone who lies so easily. I don't want to spend another day with a man who can't see the pain in his own wife's eyes."

He reached for her again. "Please, let's talk about this—"

"There's nothing left to talk about," she said quietly.

Maya walked past him, heading toward the window. The city lights blinked in the distance, but she didn't see them. All she saw was the shattered reflection of her life—every moment, every smile, every memory now painted with betrayal.

Behind her, Daniel stood frozen in place. Lena cried silently, guilt eating away at her.

But Maya didn't turn back.

Her heart had broken. Her trust was gone. And now, she had nothing left to lose.
