Chapter 1 - The Alpha King's broken luna

Chapter 1 — The Night Everything Changed

The night of the mating ceremony was colder than usual.

Debbie noticed it the moment she stepped outside. The air felt sharp against her skin, like it didn't want her there. She pulled her thin shawl tighter around herself and kept walking, even though a part of her wanted to turn back.

The pack grounds were already full.

Soft lights hung from the trees, and quiet conversations filled the air. People stood in groups, dressed nicely, laughing like this night meant something good.

For most of them, it did.

Debbie stayed close to the edge, away from the center. That was where she always felt safest—where fewer eyes could find her.

Still, it didn't take long.

"Debbie?"

She paused.

A familiar voice. Not friendly.

She turned slowly.

Three girls stood a few steps away, dressed in white, looking like they belonged here. One of them tilted her head slightly, studying Debbie like she was trying to understand why she even showed up.

"I didn't think you'd come," the girl said.

Debbie forced a small shrug. "It's required."

Another one laughed under her breath. "Still… some people know when they're not wanted."

The words weren't loud, but they didn't need to be.

Debbie had heard worse.

She didn't respond this time. Just looked away and pretended it didn't matter. That was easier than defending herself.

It always had been.

A low drumbeat cut through the air.

The ceremony was starting.

Everyone slowly moved toward the center, forming a wide circle. Debbie followed, keeping her head down, her hands clasped together so no one would see them shaking.

She didn't expect anything tonight.

She never did.

For as long as she could remember, she had been… overlooked. Not strong enough. Not important enough. Just there.

So why did her chest feel so tight?

The elder stepped forward, his voice steady and familiar as he began the ritual.

Debbie tried to focus on his words, but her thoughts kept drifting. There was a strange feeling in her chest—like something was building quietly, waiting.

She didn't understand it.

And that scared her.

Names were called.

One by one, people stepped forward, finding their mates. Some laughed, some cried, some just held each other like they had been waiting their whole lives for this moment.

Debbie watched from where she stood.

Alone.

Again.

She told herself it was fine. That it didn't matter.

But the longer she stood there, the harder it was to believe that.

Then the atmosphere shifted.

It wasn't sudden. Just… noticeable.

The conversations died down. People straightened. Some stepped back without realizing they were doing it.

Debbie felt it too.

That pressure.

Heavy. Controlled. Powerful.

She looked up.

And saw him.

The Alpha King.

He didn't rush. Didn't need to. The space opened for him as he walked, like no one would dare stand in his way.

Debbie had seen him before, from a distance.

But this felt different.

Closer.

Real.

Her chest tightened again—but this time, it wasn't just nerves.

It was something else.

He stopped.

Not far from where she stood.

And for a moment, everything felt… still.

Then his eyes lifted.

And met hers.

Debbie froze.

It wasn't supposed to happen like this.

Not to her.

But the feeling in her chest suddenly made sense.

Clear.

Undeniable.

Mate.

Her breath caught.

Her mind went blank.

Out of all the people here… it was him?

She didn't even realize she had taken a step forward until she was already moving.

"My Alpha…" she started, her voice barely steady.

He didn't interrupt her immediately.

He just looked at her.

His expression unreadable.

Calm.

Distant.

And then he spoke.

"I reject you."

It wasn't loud.

But it didn't need to be.

The words landed heavily, like they had been decided long before this moment.

Debbie blinked.

For a second, she thought she heard wrong.

"What…?" she whispered.

"I will not accept you as my mate."

His tone didn't change. No anger. No hesitation. Just certainty.

The bond reacted instantly.

A sharp, overwhelming pain spread through her chest, forcing the air out of her lungs. She staggered back, her hand pressing against her heart as if that would somehow stop it.

Around her, people were watching.

Whispering.

She didn't need to hear them to know what they were saying.

Her vision blurred.

"Why…?" she managed, her voice breaking despite her effort to stay calm.

For the first time, his expression shifted slightly.

Not softer.

Just… colder.

"You're not fit to stand beside me."

That was it.

No long explanation. No hesitation.

Just a simple truth, delivered without emotion.

Something inside Debbie went quiet.

Not shattered.

Not loudly broken.

Just… still.

She nodded slowly, even though it hurt.

"Okay," she said, barely above a whisper.

No one expected that.

Not the crowd.

Not even him.

She didn't cry.

Not there.

Not in front of everyone.

Debbie turned and walked away.

Each step felt heavier than the last, but she didn't stop. She didn't look back.

She just kept going until the noise faded and the lights were gone.

Only when she was completely alone…

Did she stop.

Her hands trembled as she pressed them against her face, trying to hold everything in.

It didn't work.

The tears came anyway.

Silent at first.

Then harder.

"I didn't even want this…" she whispered to herself, her voice shaking.

But it still hurt.

More than she expected.

The wind picked up around her, stronger than before.

Debbie didn't notice.

She didn't notice the sudden drop in temperature either.

Or the faint, almost invisible shift in the air around her.

But somewhere deep inside her…

Something responded.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

Just… awake.

And far behind her, back at the ceremony grounds…

The Alpha King stood still for a moment longer than necessary.

His jaw tightened slightly.

A feeling he didn't like settled in his chest.

Faint.

Uncomfortable.

Unfamiliar.

But he ignored it.

And walked away.
