Chapter 6 - Chapter 20 – The Hearing

Friday morning, Maya woke to a text from Vanessa.

The landlord agreed to a hearing. Next Thursday. 10 AM. Housing court.

Maya stared at the screen. A hearing. A real hearing.

She called Vanessa. "What do I need to do?"

"Bring your documentation. Photos. Letters. Witnesses. The more evidence, the better."

"Who should come?"

"Everyone who signed the petition. The more bodies, the stronger the message."

Maya hung up. She started making calls.

Mr. Delgado said yes. Jasmine said yes, but she had to leave by noon. Marco said yes. Mr. Chen said yes. The woman from 5A said maybe.

Nine people. Maybe ten.

It was enough.

---

The week passed slowly.

Maya organized the documentation. Photos of the boiler. Photos of the cracked windows. Photos of the broken lock. Copies of the letters. Copies of the petition.

Leo helped her. He sat on her floor and sorted papers while she typed.

"You're good at this," she said.

"I'm good at organizing. My mother taught me. She kept all her medical bills in a binder. Color-coded."

"That's sad."

"It's practical. Same thing sometimes."

On Wednesday night, they went to the roof. The painting was still there. Leo had added more details. The garden. The water tank. The painted eye.

Maya's face was still blurred.

"Why won't you finish it?" she asked.

"Because I'm not done understanding you."

"When will you be done?"

"Never, I hope."

She kissed him. The city hummed below.

---

Thursday morning arrived.

Maya dressed in her best clothes. Black pants. A white blouse. She looked at herself in the cracked mirror. Dark circles. A small scar on her chin.

She was ready.

The housing court was in downtown Brooklyn. A large building with marble floors and metal detectors. Maya's group gathered in the lobby. Mr. Delgado with his cane. Jasmine in her nurse's scrubs. Marco in a clean jacket. Mr. Chen in his work boots.

Nine of them.

Vanessa met them outside the courtroom. "Stay calm. Answer questions honestly. Don't interrupt. Let me do the talking."

They walked in.

The landlord was there. A man in a grey suit. The same man from the showing. He didn't look at them.

The judge was a woman in her fifties. Glasses. A tired face.

Vanessa presented the evidence. The photos. The letters. The petition.

The landlord's lawyer argued that the rent increase was necessary for repairs.

The judge listened. Then she looked at the landlord.

"You haven't made any repairs," she said. "The heat is inadequate. The water pressure is low. The locks are broken."

The landlord shifted in his seat.

The judge continued. "Rent increase denied. Landlord has sixty days to make repairs. If not, tenants may petition for rent reduction."

Maya's heart soared.

They had won.

---

After the hearing, the group gathered on the courthouse steps.

Mr. Delgado was crying. Jasmine was hugging Marco. Mr. Chen was smiling.

Maya stood apart. Her phone buzzed.

Leo: How did it go?

We won.

I knew you would.

You're not surprised?

No. You're the strongest person I know.

She looked at the screen. Her hands were shaking.

Come to the roof tonight, she wrote.

I'll be there.

She put the phone away and looked at the sky.

The clouds were breaking. Sunlight streamed through.

Small win.

But it was a win.
