Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Chaos Director

The barrier didn't just break; it shattered into a thousand jagged, glowing pixels. The hum of the medical field was replaced by the bone-chilling screech of static.

"Surprise!"

Standing in the threshold of the back door was a girl who looked like she belonged in a candy-colored pop video, not a slaughterhouse. Anna was swinging a oversized, neon-pink baseball bat that hummed with electricity. Her HUD was a blinding strobe light of notifications:

[ANNA | CLASS: THE WILD_CARD | FOLLOWERS: 245,000].

"Anna? What are you doing?" Alice cried, shielding the wounded boy.

"Boosting your engagement, obviously!"

Anna giggled, stepping aside to let a twitching, faceless Shadow-Ban monster crawl into the tent. "Your stream was getting way too 'Sad Grey Hospital.' I thought it needed a guest star!"

The monster lunged. Its static-filled fingers were inches from Alice's throat.

Aeron didn't think.

He swiped the Glitch-Tool.

 [COMMAND: OVERWRITE_TEXTURE].

Flicker.

The monster's terrifying grey static turned into bright, harmless-looking bubbles. It hit Alice, but instead of draining her life, it bounced off like a beach ball.

[GLITCH USED: 'AESTHETIC_REWRITE']

[COST: 1 HOUR OF LIFESPAN]

[SIDE EFFECT: MEMORY FRAGMENT DELETED - 'THE TASTE OF STRAWBERRIES']

Aeron winced. A phantom sweetness vanished from his mind, replaced by a hollow metallic tang.

"Hey! You're ruining the tension!" Anna pouted, swinging her bat. CRACK. She smashed the bubble-monster, and it exploded into a shower of "Like" icons.

"People pay for the jump scares, not the bubbles, Glitch-Boy!"

"They pay for the story," Aeron growled, his eyes darting to the swarm of silhouettes outside. "And the story is that you just saved a hospital. If you help us get to the Suburbs, I'll make sure you're the hero of the hour. Your followers will hit 300k by midnight."

Anna tilted her head, her neon-pink pigtails swaying. "300k? Hmm. Throw in a 'Dramatic Rescue' slow-mo shot and you've got a deal."

[NEW PARTY FORMED: THE_OUTCASTS]

[MEMBERS: AERON, ALICE, ANNA]

"We have to move," Alice said, her voice shaking as she hoisted the wounded boy onto a hovering stretcher. "The Stampede is circling the block. If we stay, the 'Bounty' Aeron set will bring every player in the district here to collect."

"She's right," Aeron said. He looked at the Glitch-Tool. He could see the "Heat Map" of the city. Red dots were converging. "The 'Golden Circle' enforcers are five minutes away. They don't want the boy. They want the Glitch and the Healer."

They sprinted out the back. The city was a nightmare of neon and shadow. Every few seconds, a drone would dive-bomb them, trying to get a "Money Shot" of their fear.

"Aeron, look!" Alice pointed to a massive LED billboard towering over the street.

It wasn't showing ads. It was showing a live leaderboard.

[TOP TRENDING PLAYERS]

KAISHA - 12,000,000 Followers (Status: Goddess)

THE_ENFORCER - 8,000,000 Followers (Status: Hunter)

...

AERON - 25,000 Followers (Status: Rising Star)

Aeron's heart sank. He was climbing, but he was a flea compared to the giants.

"We're being tracked," Anna chirped, checking her own tablet. "The 'Viewers' just unlocked a new feature: 'GPS DONATIONS.' Someone just paid 50,000 Likes to pin our exact coordinates to the public map for the next ten minutes."

"Who would do that?" Alice gasped.

"Everyone," Aeron said grimly. "It's called 'Gamification.' They want to see the chase."

They reached the edge of the district—the "Bridge of Subs." It was a narrow, high-tech walkway that connected the Slums to the Suburbs. But the bridge was blocked.

Standing in the center was a squad of players in sleek, gold-trimmed tactical gear. Kaisha's Mods. In the center was a man with a glowing visor.

"End of the line, Ghost," the leader said, his voice amplified by the system. "Kaisha sends her regards. She says your 'Edit' was cute, but the Algorithm always prefers a high-budget execution."

[EVENT: THE GATEKEEPER'S TOLL]

[OBJECTIVE: PAY 10,000 LIKES TO PASS OR FIGHT TO THE DEATH.]

"We don't have 10,000 Likes," Alice whispered. "I used them all on the medical supplies."

Aeron looked at Anna. She was grinning, her bat humming with a lethal pink glow. He looked at his Glitch-Tool. His head was pounding. If he used another big glitch, what would he forget next? His father's face? His own birthday?

"Anna, get ready to swing," Aeron whispered.

"Ooh, are we doing a 'Final Stand' arc?"

Anna's eyes sparkled. "The fans love those.

The donations are going to be huge!"

Aeron didn't look at the Mods. He looked at the camera drones.

"You want a high-budget execution?" Aeron addressed the billions of viewers. "Then let's give the Mods a taste of their own 'Sponsored Content.'"

He tapped the Glitch-Tool.

 [COMMAND: INJECT_AD_MALWARE].

[ THE MODS' HUDs SUDDENLY FREEZE. THEY ARE BEING FORCED TO WATCH A 30-SECOND UN-SKIPPABLE ADVERTISEMENT IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE.]
