Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 — The First Test

‎"…Adrian." ‎A name without weight. For now.

‎Damien's gaze lingered for a moment longer before he turned fully and disappeared into the crowd.

‎But the effect he left behind didn't fade.

‎The atmosphere had changed.

‎Subtly. But undeniably.

‎Where there had once been quiet curiosity, there was now attention.

‎Focused.

‎Intentional.

‎Dangerous.

‎"They're watching you now."

‎Elena's voice was low, controlled.

‎Not a warning.

‎A fact.

‎Adrian didn't react.

‎"I know."

‎Across the room, conversations resumed but differently.

‎Eyes flickered toward him.

‎Whispers formed.

‎Measured. Curious.

‎Marcus swirled the drink in his glass, glancing between them.

‎"Well," he said lightly, "you certainly know how to make an entrance."

‎A pause.

‎"Or an impression."

‎Adrian's gaze moved across the room.

‎Mapping. Reading. Understanding.

‎"They needed a reason to pay attention," he said calmly.

‎Marcus raised an eyebrow.

‎"And now you've given them one."

‎Before Adrian could respond, A soft chime echoed through the space.

‎Clear.

‎Intentional.

‎The room stilled.

‎Not completely.

‎But enough.

‎At the center of the lounge, a man stepped forward onto a slightly elevated platform.

‎Older.

‎Refined.

‎The kind of presence that didn't need to assert authority... Because it already had it.

‎"Elena," Marcus murmured, his tone shifting slightly. "Looks like the night is about to get interesting."

‎The man on the platform spoke.

‎"Ladies and gentlemen."

‎His voice was smooth, carrying effortlessly through the room.

‎"As always, welcome."

‎A pause.

‎"Tonight… we observe."

‎A subtle ripple moved through the crowd.

‎Elena's eyes narrowed slightly.

‎"…They're moving faster than usual."

‎Adrian glanced at her.

‎"Explain."

‎She didn't look at him.

‎"This isn't just a gathering," she said quietly. "Sometimes… they test people."

‎A beat.

‎"And tonight..."

‎Her gaze shifted briefly toward where Damien had disappeared.

‎"...someone requested it."

‎Silence.

‎Then a faint smile touched Adrian's lips.

‎"Convenient."

‎At the center the man continued.

‎"We've had… recent developments within the city."

‎A pause.

‎"Unexpected ones."

‎Eyes shifted.

‎Subtle.

‎But coordinated.

‎"We believe," he said calmly, "that such movements deserve… acknowledgment."

‎The words were polite.

‎Refined.

‎But beneath them was something sharper.

‎"Tonight's session," he continued, "will proceed with a simple exercise."

‎A pause.

‎"To measure… potential."

‎A murmur spread through the room.

‎Elena exhaled slowly.

‎"They're not wasting time."

‎Adrian's gaze remained steady.

‎"Good."

‎The man raised a hand slightly.

‎And instantly staff moved.

‎Quiet. Efficient.

‎Within moments, a large digital screen illuminated the center of the room.

‎Data streamed across it.

‎Names.

‎Companies.

‎Assets.

‎Marcus leaned slightly closer.

‎"…You're about to be entertained," he murmured.

‎Adrian didn't look at him.

‎His attention was fixed on the screen.

‎"This is a simulation," the man on the platform explained. "A real-time scenario based on current market conditions."

‎A pause.

‎"Participants will be selected."

‎Silence.

‎Tight.

‎Anticipating.

‎"And tested."

‎The word landed heavily.

‎Elena's fingers curled slightly.

‎"This isn't a game," she said under her breath. "This is how they evaluate threats… and assets."

‎Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

‎"Same thing."

‎The man's gaze moved across the room.

‎Slow.

‎Deliberate.

‎Then he spoke.

‎"Adrian Voss."

‎Silence. Absolute.

‎Every head turned.

‎Every eye locked onto him.

‎Marcus let out a low breath.

‎"Well," he muttered, "that didn't take long."

‎Elena's jaw tightened slightly.

‎"…Of course."

‎Adrian didn't move.

‎Didn't react.

‎"Step forward."

‎The command echoed through the room.

‎For a moment... Stillness.

‎Then Adrian moved. ‎Calm. Unhurried.

‎Each step steady as he walked toward the center.

‎Eyes followed him. ‎Measuring. ‎Judging. ‎Waiting.

‎At the edge of the platform, he stopped.

‎Looking up at the man above.

‎"You've drawn attention," the man said calmly.

‎A pause.

‎"Let's see if you deserve it."

‎The screen shifted.

‎Data reorganized instantly.

‎"A failing company," the man continued. "Assets collapsing. Pressure from multiple fronts."

‎Numbers flashed.

‎Red.

‎Falling.

‎"Your task..."

‎A beat.

‎"Stabilize it."

‎A murmur spread.

‎Elena's expression tightened.

‎"They're testing your ability to respond under pressure," she said quietly. "In real time."

‎Adrian's gaze remained fixed on the screen.

‎"Is that all?"

‎The man's eyes flickered slightly.

‎"Time limit..."

‎He glanced at the system.

‎"Ten minutes."

‎The room went silent again.

‎Because everyone understood what that meant.

‎Impossible.

‎Marcus shook his head faintly.

‎"…They're not testing him."

‎A pause.

‎"They're trying to break him."

‎Adrian stepped closer to the console.

‎The data reflected in his eyes.

‎Fast. Complex. Chaotic.

‎A failing company.

‎Crashing assets.

‎Hostile pressure.

‎Ten minutes.

‎Silence stretched.

‎Then Adrian placed his hand on the interface and smiled.

‎Not wide.

‎Not dramatic.

‎But enough.

‎"…This is your test?" he said quietly.

‎A pause.

‎Then he looked up.

‎"You should've made it harder."

‎The room stilled.

‎And in that moment something shifted again.

‎Because this time... It wasn't just attention.

‎It was anticipation.
