Chapter 1 - Kagutsuchi Shin

"Ring, ring, ring!"

The bell of the Konoha Ninja Academy echoed through the halls, marking the end of classes for the day.

In an instant, the classroom burst into motion.

Students streamed out like birds escaping an open cage, their voices overlapping in excited chatter about the graduation exam, squad assignments, and their future as a Ninja.

Only after the classroom emptied did Kagutsuchi Shin rise from his seat.

With both hands tucked into his pockets, he walked out at an unhurried pace.

His black hair was slightly messy, with faint brown tinges at the tips, as though bleached by the sun. His features were sharp and well-defined for his age.

What made him stand out from other children was his calm, steady expression, which gave him a presence far more mature than the average academy student.

There was nothing childish about him.

Under the sunlight, his eyes reflected a muted amber hue as they swept forward, indifferent to the noise around him.

He had long since grown used to things like graduation and becoming a ninja. None of it held much interest.

The hallway remained crowded.

"Hey, who do you think will be the top student this time?" Kiba's loud voice cut through the noise. Akamaru perched comfortably on his shoulder.

Shikamaru yawned, scratching the back of his head, clearly uninterested.

"Is that even a question? It's Shin. Perfect scores in theory, and in actual combat… no one's ever beaten him." His tone was lazy, but his eyes carried a hint of seriousness.

Because Shin's strength wasn't just impressive.

It was overwhelming. There was a clear gap between him and the rest of them, one that felt almost impossible to close.

"Crunch, crunch…" Leaning against the wall, Choji continued eating his potato chips without looking up.

"I think Shikamaru's right. Shin is really strong."

Kiba clicked his tongue.

"Yeah, he's good. But Sasuke isn't weak either."

That single comment was enough to spark trouble.

"Sasuke-kun is obviously amazing!" Ino said immediately, raising her voice. "But Shin-kun is more consistent. Every exam, he beats Sasuke without any doubt!"

Sakura turned sharply, irritation flashing across her face.

"Ino-pig, what do you know? Sasuke-kun is cool and talented, and he's improving faster every time! Shin is strong, sure, but Sasuke-kun is clearly better!"

"Better in what way?" Ino shot back, planting her hands on her hips. "Forehead girl, you don't understand anything. Shin-kun's calm attitude is what real strength looks like!"

In the blink of an eye, the hallway turned into their battlefield. Their argument grew louder, drawing attention from everyone nearby.

Choji quietly shrank back, stuffing more chips into his mouth.

"As expected… girls are scary…"

Shikamaru watched the escalating situation with a tired expression and let out a long sigh.

"What a drag…"

He glanced at Kiba. "This is your fault."

Kiba scratched his cheek awkwardly. "Hey, don't blame me. I didn't think they'd take it this far."

Akamaru gave a small whimper, as if agreeing.

Not far away, Shin observed the scene in silence.

His gaze moved over Ino and Sakura as they argued, then shifted to Shikamaru's helpless expression, Kiba's embarrassment, and Choji's steady eating.

These were his classmates. Soon, they would all become ninja. Yet here they were, arguing over something so trivial.

Eventually, Shikamaru pulled Kiba and Choji away, while Ino and Sakura glared at each other before heading off in opposite directions.

Only then did Shin begin walking again.

He let out a quiet sigh. "I really don't understand…They're about to become ninja who risk their lives, and they can still argue like this over nothing."

In battle, a single mistake could cost a life.

Admiring someone would not save them, but somehow, they all managed to survive until the last episode.

Before he even reached the academy gates, another familiar voice rang out. "Sasuke! You jerk! Why does Sakura always stick to you?!"

Shin paused and glanced over.

As expected, it was Naruto. Bright blond hair, loud voice, and an endless supply of energy.

Naruto stood there, glaring at Sasuke with a defiant expression.

Sasuke didn't even stop walking. He only gave Naruto a brief, cold glance. "You're noisy, dead last."

That was enough to ignite him. "Who are you calling dead last?!" Naruto charged forward, arms flailing as he tried to grab Sasuke.

Sasuke shifted slightly and struck without hesitation. His elbow drove straight into Naruto's stomach.

"Gah!" Naruto doubled over, clutching his stomach as he dropped to the ground.

Even so, he forced himself upright, baring his teeth stubbornly. "Tch… you cheap shot… just wait! Next time I'll definitely win!"

Shin watched from a short distance away. Despite being the top student in the class, Naruto seemed entirely focused on Sasuke.

Not that he cared. But some rivalries were inevitable, and the clash between the incarnations of Indra and Ashura was always worth watching

His gaze lingered briefly on Sasuke. "The Uchiha…"

He had to admit, the Sharingan was an enviable bloodline limit. After all, it was simply too cool once those eyes were activated.

Shin shook his head and continued forward.

Suddenly, a shadow slammed into his shoulder from the side. He stepped aside instinctively.

"Thud!" Naruto tumbled past him, clearly having been kicked away by Sasuke again.

"…Ow, that hurt…" Naruto groaned as he pushed himself up, rubbing his back.

When he looked up and saw Shin, he froze for a moment.

"…Oh. Shin."

Shin raised an eyebrow and crouched slightly, resting one hand on his knee as he looked down at him. "Naruto. This is the third time this week I've seen you get sent flying by Sasuke."

Naruto's face flushed red immediately. "That's not true! It hasn't been three times!"

Shin stood up and walked past him, hands returning to his pockets. "Try staying out of trouble for once. You are weak!"

Behind him, Naruto clutched his head and jumped around in frustration.

"Ahh! Shin, you bastard! Don't think you're so great just because you're the top student! Just wait until I beat you… and Sasuke too! You guys won't be so smug then!"

Not far away, Sasuke had stopped moving. His eyes were locked on Shin's back, his lips pressed into a thin line.

It was him. From the very first day at the academy, Shin had always been ahead.

Theory, taijutsu, and ninjutsu. Every single evaluation ended the same way. Shin's name stood above his.

Sasuke had never once forced him to reveal his full strength. As a proud Uchiha, that effortless superiority irritated him.

"Hey! Sasuke!" Naruto's voice snapped him out of his thoughts."What are you spacing out for? Don't tell me you're scared of Shin, too!"

Sasuke shot him a cold look. "Idiot."

Naruto bristled immediately. "Who are you calling an idiot?!"

"Whoever answers." Sasuke's tone was flat, laced with quiet disdain.

A competitive intent burned deep within him. Ignoring Naruto's shouting, he stepped forward and followed in Shin's direction.

With graduation drawing near, Sasuke needed to know just how strong Shin—the top student who had always stood above him—truly was.

If he couldn't surpass the one in front of him, then how could he ever hope to kill that man?"

"Hey! Sasuke! Don't ignore me!"

Naruto grabbed his head in frustration, but as he watched the two of them heading in the same direction, something lit up in his blue eyes.

"Hmph. So what if he's the top student? I'm Naruto Uzumaki. I'll surpass both of you sooner or later!"

Despite the beating he had just taken, his spirit burned brighter than ever.

Shin had just stepped out of the academy gates when he felt someone's gaze. He didn't stop walking, only glancing back slightly.

Sasuke was following him. The boy's eyes were fixed on him, filled with open challenge.

Naruto bounced along beside him, still noisy, though completely ignored.

Shin withdrew his gaze and continued forward.

"Shin." Sasuke's voice called out from behind him.

Shin stopped and turned halfway. By the time he faced him, Sasuke had already closed the distance. They stood barely a meter apart.

Naruto hurried over as well, looking between the two with obvious curiosity.

"Something you need?" Shin asked calmly.

Sasuke met his eyes directly.

"Kagutsuchi Shin. In every combat assessment over the past few years, you were the one who won."

Shin said nothing, waiting.

"With graduation approaching," Sasuke continued, his voice steady, "I want to know how big the gap between us really is."

Shin's lips curved faintly. "And?"

"Fight me. Right here."

Naruto's eyes widened. "Wait, what? Right now?"

Shin studied Sasuke for a moment, finding the situation unexpectedly interesting.

"If that's what you want… fine. Come at me, Uchiha Sasuke."

Sasuke didn't hesitate. His body surged forward, a sharp kick slicing through the air toward Shin's side.

The strike was fast, straightforward, and powerful enough to take down most academy students instantly.

Shin easily intercepted the attack with his left hand, which closed around Sasuke's ankle with perfect timing.

Sasuke's expression changed. He twisted, trying to break free, but his leg wouldn't budge. It felt like his ankle had been caught in iron. Why is the gap still this big?

"Is this all Uchiha taijutsu amounts to?" Shin said, his tone calm.

A faint smile crossed his lips as he effortlessly hurled him down. Sasuke was lifted off the ground and slammed into it with force. The impact was heavy and direct, kicking up a cloud of dust.

Shin released him.

Sasuke collapsed to the ground, his head spinning and vision blurred, pain coursing through his entire body. For a moment, even breathing felt difficult.

"…Ugh…" He tried to push himself up, but his strength failed him.

Nearby, Naruto stood frozen, mouth open, eyes wide in disbelief.

Shin brushed his hands lightly, as if clearing dust that wasn't even there, and looked down at Sasuke.

"Did you see the gap between us?" He shook his head slightly.

Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked away.

Naruto stood there, still stunned.

The Sasuke he had been chasing was completely helpless in front of Shin. He couldn't even last a single exchange.

"…That was amazing…" The words slipped out before he realized it.

Then he snapped back to himself and rushed over. "Hey! Sasuke! Are you okay? Can you move?"

Sasuke lay on the ground, staring blankly at the sky. He couldn't believe he had been defeated in a single exchange.

The pain from slamming into the ground still throbbed through his body, but it was nothing compared to the sting in his chest. As a Uchiha, his pride took the hardest blow.

Naruto's voice reached him faintly, but he ignored it. After a while, Sasuke gritted his teeth and pushed himself up with his arms.

Naruto reached out to help, but Sasuke brushed him aside and stood on his own.

Then he looked at Naruto, lips pale, voice low and rough. "I'm going home. And what happened today… You're not telling anyone."

Without waiting for a reply, he turned and limped away toward the Uchiha compound.

Naruto watched him go, scratching his head. "…Yeah, yeah. I get it. Stuck-up Sasuke." He turned to leave, but suddenly stopped.

Wait. Did Sasuke just say not to tell anyone?

Naruto blinked.

Then it clicked.

A secret.

Something Sasuke didn't want anyone else to know.

A slow grin spread across his face. "Oh ho…" The corners of his mouth lifted higher and higher until he was practically beaming.

He could already imagine it. Next time Sasuke called him dead last, he would just lean in and say it casually.

"Sasuke… you wouldn't want people to hear about what happened between you and Shin, right?"

What kind of face would Sasuke make then?

Naruto snickered to himself, barely holding it in. In the open space before the academy, his slightly mischievous laughter echoed.
