Chapter 440: The Tug-of-War Begins, A Battle for the Nine-Tails' Power
Inside the boundless expanse of the Tianyu Space.
Uzumaki Naruto and Gaara sat cross-legged on the smooth ground, their breathing steady and their eyes pressed tightly shut. Standing a short distance away, Uchiha Akira observed them with a calm, calculating gaze.
'System,'Akira commanded silently, his mental voice sharp and authoritative.'Activate the Waterfall of Truth simulation.'

[Current targets: Uzumaki Naruto, Gaara.]
[Trial beginning.]
Naruto and Gaara's consciousness sank instantly, plunging into a suffocating abyss.
When Naruto's eyelids fluttered open, the bright, sterile environment of the Tianyu Space was gone. Instead, the soles of his sandals rested upon a surface of pitch-black water. Ripples spread outward with every subtle shift of his weight. He looked around. Collapsed ruins boxed him in, the crumbling walls defaced with jagged, hateful graffiti.
"This is..." Naruto's pupils constricted. His breath hitched in his throat.
He recognized the peeling paint and the oppressive shadows. This was the alleyway just below the cramped apartment where he had grown up.
The water's surface rippled violently. A dark silhouette slowly rose from his own reflection, peeling away from the water like thick ink.
Dark Naruto.
The doppelganger tilted his head, a mocking, flippant smirk twisting his lips. "Isn't this the idiot who goes around screaming 'I'm going to become Hokage' all day?"
Naruto's fists clenched tight enough to turn his knuckles white. "Who are you?"
Dark Naruto let out a harsh, contemptuous laugh. "I am you." The doppelganger took a slow step forward. "I am the truest, rawest resentment festering at the very bottom of your heart."
Suddenly, Dark Naruto closed the distance, his face mere inches away. Crimson eyes, burning with unadulterated malice, locked onto Naruto's blue ones.
"Stop pretending," the dark entity sneered. "Have you forgotten how those villagers treated you? Demon Fox. Monster. Get out of the village."
With every venomous word, the black aura rolling off Dark Naruto grew denser, suffocating the air around them.
"It is only because Uchiha Akira holds the reins of power now that those cowards don't dare curse you in the streets. They've even started welcoming you with fake, sickening smiles." Dark Naruto's voice dropped to a dangerous hiss. "Are you really going to forgive them just like that? Hypocrisy! Disgusting!"
Roaring with sudden, explosive fury, Dark Naruto swung a fist coated in black chakra directly into Naruto's jaw. The impact cracked like a whip. Naruto was sent flying backward, skipping across the pitch-black water before crashing heavily into the surface.
"We are going to kill them all!" Dark Naruto shrieked, leaping into the air. "Destroy Konoha! That is what we should be doing!"
He landed squarely on Naruto's chest, straddling him as his fists rained down in a merciless, blinding flurry.
Meanwhile, in a separate solitary consciousness.
Gaara's mental world was a hellscape of crimson. A literal mountain of corpses rose from a churning sea of blood. Countless bodies—crushed, mangled, and deformed by immense sand pressure—were stacked haphazardly to form a grotesque, towering spire.
At the very peak of this macabre monument sat a small, red-haired boy. He was drenched from head to toe in fresh blood.
"Mother said to kill everyone," the boy whispered, his voice echoing with a chilling, hollow innocence. "Only blood can prove my existence."
The real Gaara stood at the base of the tower, his teal eyes quiet and unreadable as he stared up at his crazed, younger self.
"Don't want to kill anymore?" the blood-soaked Gaara asked, his lips curling into a savage, jagged grin. Behind him, torrents of crimson, blood-clotted sand began to erupt from a massive gourd. "Is it because of that Uchiha Akira? Because he is stronger than you, so you tuck your tail and act as obedient as a dog?"
The young phantom's voice turned shrill, dripping with venom. "Have you forgotten how Yashamaru died? Have you forgotten how your own father sent assassins to slaughter you in your sleep, time and time again?!"
The sea of blood roared. Massive waves of crimson sand and gore surged upward, crashing down like a tsunami and instantly swallowing the real Gaara whole.
Back inside the physical bounds of the Tianyu Space.
Uchiha Akira stood with his hands clasped behind his back, his expression a mask of absolute calm as he observed the two trembling figures on the floor. Sweat beaded on their foreheads; their muscles twitched under the strain of their internal nightmares.
This was a necessary crucible. To master the catastrophic power of a Tailed Beast, a jinchuriki first had to master their own heart. If they could not conquer the darkness festering within their own souls, they would be nothing more than hollow vessels, easily swallowed by the beasts' ancient malice.
Deep within the pitch-black ruins of his mind.
Naruto slowly pushed himself off the watery floor. He raised a thumb, wiping a smear of blood from the corner of his mouth. Instead of retaliating, he looked at the enraged, panting Dark Naruto with an unexpected, deep calm.
"You are right," Naruto said, his voice steady. "I really did hate them once."
Dark Naruto froze, his fist hovering mid-strike. Then, his face twisted into an even more ferocious scowl. "Then why?! Why are you still throwing your life away for Uchiha Akira?!"
"Throwing my life away?" Naruto slowly shook his head. The hesitation that once clouded his blue eyes was entirely gone, replaced by an unshakable resolve. "Teacher taught me how to become strong. He didn't just give me power; he let me see a completely different world. The Konoha of the past was rotten and dark. But the Konoha of today... that is an order established by Teacher."
Naruto took a deliberate step forward, splashing through the dark water. He opened his arms wide, leaving his chest completely undefended.
"I am not fighting for the people who once hurt me," Naruto declared, his voice echoing through the crumbling alleyway. "I am fighting for the people who acknowledge me."
Dark Naruto snarled, lunging forward with a devastating punch aimed right at Naruto's face.
"You are a part of me," Naruto whispered.
He didn't dodge. He didn't block. Instead, as the fist grazed his cheek, Naruto stepped into the strike and wrapped his arms tightly around his darker half. He pulled the entity into a firm, unyielding embrace.
"Come back," Naruto murmured softly. "Together, let's go see that new world Teacher described."
Dark Naruto's raised fist trembled, freezing in mid-air. The suffocating black aura rolling off his body began to thin, dissolving like mist under a morning sun. The burning hatred in his crimson eyes wavered, gradually fading back into a clear, bright blue.
"What an..." Dark Naruto muttered, his voice losing its demonic distortion, "...irredeemable idiot."
The dark figure dissolved into a warm, brilliant stream of light, sinking directly into Naruto's chest and merging smoothly with his soul.
At that exact moment, within the neighboring mental realm.
The towering tsunami of blood and sand crashed down, but instead of crushing Gaara, it parted around him, receding into a calm, shallow pool. Gaara stood completely unharmed at the base of the corpse tower. He looked up at the crazed, blood-soaked child.
Slowly, the sand carried him upward until he stood face-to-face with his past trauma. Gaara reached out a pale hand. He didn't strike. He gently rested his palm on the blood-stained red hair of the phantom child, patting his head with a quiet, solemn tenderness.
"Whether a Shura born of sand, or a weapon forged in betrayal..." Gaara spoke, his voice carrying a heavy, grounding weight. "That is all me. I do not deny my past."
The phantom child's savage grin slowly faded into a look of stunned confusion.
"But now," Gaara continued, his teal eyes shining with a quiet, intense clarity that had never existed there before. "I am simply Gaara."
Back in the physical world of the Tianyu Space.
Two massive, distinct bursts of chakra suddenly erupted from the seated boys, sweeping outward like a gale. The turbulent, chaotic energy that had been leaking from them stabilized, becoming pure and incredibly dense.
Uchiha Akira's lips curled upward into a faint, approving smirk.
"Phase one, complete," Akira murmured, his dark eyes gleaming with anticipation. "Now... it is time to have a heart-to-heart with Kurama and Shukaku."
Deep within the lowest levels of Naruto's consciousness.
The rhythmic sound of falling water echoed through the damp, cavernous sewer. Naruto stood ankle-deep in the water, his posture completely relaxed as he gazed up at the towering, rusted iron bars of the seal.
"Hey, Kurama," Naruto called out, his voice echoing into the pitch-black void beyond the cage. He locked eyes with the pair of massive, glowing crimson slits that snapped open in the darkness. "Are you ready?"
A deafening, rumbling snort blasted from the shadows, carrying enough force to whip Naruto's blonde hair back. The water around his ankles churned violently. Slowly, the colossal, mountainous form of the Nine-Tails emerged into the dim light. Its orange fur bristled with ancient malice, and its nine massive tails thrashed wildly behind it, generating a suffocating, physical pressure that threatened to crush the air out of the room.
"Arrogant brat," Kurama's deep, demonic voice vibrated through the very walls of the sewer. "If you want to seize this old man's power, you had better prove you have the skill to take it! If you are consumed by my chakra and twisted into a mindless monster that only knows how to slaughter... don't say I didn't warn you!"
Naruto's mouth quirked into a fearless, sharp grin.
"Stop your yapping, you overgrown fox!" he shouted back, entirely unbothered by the beast's killing intent. "Teacher said this is a step that must be crossed, and I'm not backing down!"
Naruto took a deep, steadying breath. He grabbed the hem of his jacket and shirt, pulling them up to expose his abdomen. There, the complex, swirling black ink of the Eight Trigrams Sealing Jutsu formula was already pulsing with a faint, golden glow.
He didn't hesitate for a single second. Naruto reached out, pressed his palm flat against the spiral pattern at the very core of the seal, and gave it a sharp, decisive twist.
The heavy, metallic clank echoed like a gunshot.
Seal, released.
In an instant, the massive iron gates groaned and swung wide open. A literal tsunami of boiling red chakra—thick, viscous, and saturated with centuries of pure violence and hatred—surged frantically out of the cage, roaring directly toward Naruto.
"Come at me!!" Naruto roared.
Instead of bracing for impact or stepping back, he planted his feet and actively charged forward into the crimson wave. His own massive reserves of pure blue chakra erupted outward like a geyser, clashing violently against the Nine-Tails' demonic red aura.
The ultimate tug-of-war had begun.
The two distinct, opposing forces of chakra ground violently against each other within the confined mental space. The friction between the pure blue and the corrupted red sparked blinding flashes of light, letting out a series of ear-piercing, thunderous explosions.
"Ugh...!"
The moment the crimson chakra made physical contact with his skin, Naruto's expression twisted in agony. His knees buckled slightly. It was impossibly heavy. It felt like trying to hold up a collapsing mountain.
Within the Nine-Tails' chakra, there was not just raw, destructive power. It was a concentrated miasma of accumulated resentment, blinding anger, and suffocating despair spanning a thousand years. Like a virulent poison, these negative emotions latched onto the chakra connection, violently invading Naruto's mind and frantically battering his mental defenses.
[Kill! Kill them all!]
[Why are you the only one treated like this?!]
[Destroy Konoha! Tear everything to pieces!]
Countless dark, overlapping whispers shrieked directly into Naruto's ears, clawing at his sanity as the red chakra began to sear his flesh.
