Chapter 241 - The Tanuki and the God

Chapter 241: The Tanuki and the God

The battlefield within Sunagakure was a scene of carnage and chaos. Buildings lay in ruins, scorched by fire, littered with the bodies of Suna shinobi. The surviving Sand ninja fought with the desperate ferocity of cornered animals, but they were vastly outnumbered and outmatched by the relentless Konoha forces led by Uchiha Kenji.

High above, Rasa, the Fourth Kazekage, watched the destruction of his village, his heart filled with a cold, numbing despair. His gold dust defenses had proven useless against the sheer onslaught. His elite guard were falling one by one. Hope was draining away like water through sand.

Suddenly, from the deepest, most secure sector of the village below, a new, monstrous chakra signature erupted. It was wild, ancient, and filled with an overwhelming, chaotic malice.

Violent chakra, like a tangible, invisible hurricane, swept outwards, flattening weaker structures and forcing both Konoha and Suna shinobi alike to brace themselves against the sheer pressure!

Rumble!

The very ground in that deep sector of the village suddenly exploded upwards! Not from a jutsu, but from something emerging. Endless tons of yellow sand shot vertically into the sky, obscuring the sun, forming a colossal, swirling pillar!

The sand gathered, rolled, churned, and began to condense rapidly in mid-air!

A ferocious, gigantic, monstrous outline, filled with an ancient, ominous aura, was rapidly taking shape within the swirling vortex of yellow sand!

"It's… it's that thing!" a surviving Suna Jōnin near Rasa gasped, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and desperate hope.

"Baki… Baki actually succeeded! He released it!"

[Inorin's Note: Baki is an elite Jōnin of Sunagakure and Rasa's trusted subordinate. The original text mentioned 'Maki', which is likely a typo given Baki's rank and proximity to the Kazekage. Releasing Shukaku would be a high-level, desperate act.]

Rasa, who had been slumping in defeat, suddenly looked up. His eyes, which had been dull with despair, reignited with a flicker of mad, desperate flame.

Yes! Our final trump card!

Sunagakure's ultimate, most dangerous war weapon! The beast sealed within his own unstable son!

The Tailed Beast! Ichibi Shukaku! The One-Tail!

[Inorin's Note: Tailed Beasts (Bijū) are nine colossal entities made of pure chakra. Shukaku, the One-Tail, resembles a giant tanuki made of sand and was sealed within Rasa's son, Gaara.]

"ROOOOAR—!!!"

Accompanied by another deafening, earth-shattering roar that dwarfed any sound heard on the battlefield thus far, the swirling sand cloud completely dispersed, revealing the creature within.

A monster. Easily over a hundred meters tall, a grotesque, grinning parody of a tanuki, crafted entirely from churning, magically-infused sand. Dark, cursed seal markings covered its body. Its eyes glowed with malevolent, golden light.

Ichibi Shukaku, the Spirit of the Sand, had descended upon the battlefield!

"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

"I! AM FINALLY OUT!!"

Shukaku threw back his massive, sandy head, opening his enormous maw, and let out an incredibly excited, booming laugh. The sheer sound waves rolled across the battlefield like thunder, shaking the very earth, rattling the bones of every ninja present.

Feeling the long-lost, intoxicating sensation of freedom, Shukaku twisted his enormous, sandy body, his thick, spiked tail thrashing wildly behind him, demolishing several already-damaged buildings with casual indifference.

"This land! This air! How nostalgic!" he boomed, his voice echoing with insane glee.

"As a celebratory gift for my newfound freedom… I think I'll turn this entire pathetic village into a sea of sand first! Bury you all!"

Shukaku laughed wildly again, raising one colossal, sand-clawed paw, preparing to utterly crush everything – Konoha and Suna alike – in front of him.

But, the next second.

Shukaku's movements abruptly froze. Mid-swing.

The insane laughter in his massive mouth stopped short, caught in his sandy throat.

Because right in front of him. Hovering silently in the air between him and the Konoha forces.

A Susanoo giant. Entirely purplish-blue. Clad in intricate, Tengu-like armor. Wielding a long, ethereal energy sword. And easily matching his own hundred-meter height.

It stood silently there, radiating an ancient, divine pressure that made Shukaku's own chaotic chakra recoil.

[Inorin's Note: Susanoo is the ultimate ability of the Mangekyō Sharingan/Rinnegan, creating a giant chakra avatar around the user. Its Perfect Susanoo form is powerful enough to rival Tailed Beasts.]

Su… Susanoo! Shukaku's mind stuttered.

And… it's a Perfect Susanoo!

His golden eyes widened in pure, unadulterated terror. Only one name flashed through his ancient memory, associated with such overwhelming power.

Uchiha… MADARA!

"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!" Shukaku shrieked internally, his earlier bravado instantly evaporating. "Did Uchiha Madara crawl out of his goddamn grave?! AGAIN?!"

Shukaku even raised one massive, clumsy, sand-made paw and frantically rubbed his eyes, genuinely wondering if he had just woken up from his sealing and was still hallucinating from the Jinchūriki transfer.

No! Wait… Shukaku focused, his Tailed Beast senses analyzing the Susanoo's chakra. The aura… it isn't quite right! It feels… younger? Colder? But this Susanoo… the power… there's no mistaking it! It's definitely from the Uchiha Clan!

Shukaku's colossal, sandy body began to tremble violently, uncontrollably.

Rustle… rustle… Sand, loosened by his fear, trickled down from his body like nervous sweat.

As a Tailed Beast, one of the nine oldest beings in existence, he knew exactly what a Perfect Susanoo truly meant. He had faced it before.

It was the power of a demigod. A power capable of easily rivaling a Tailed Beast. Or, more accurately, surpassing it. Dominating it.

Not to mention, the Uchiha's accursed eyes, the Mangekyō Sharingan that birthed this monstrosity, could control Tailed Beasts! Enslave them!

Forget that I'm just the Ichibi! Shukaku panicked. Even if that strongest, most arrogant bastard Kurama came here right now, even he would have to kneel before this thing!

He remembered. He remembered the legends, the shared memories passed between the Tailed Beasts across the centuries.

Back then… wasn't that arrogant prick Kurama, the one who always called himself the strongest, just a damn pet dog for Madara?! Armored up in Susanoo, controlled freely, used as a weapon?!

Even the NINE-TAILS was reduced to that! So wouldn't I just be serving myself up on a silver platter?! A light snack?!

Moreover… he could clearly feel it now. The oppressive, divine aura emanating from this particular Susanoo… it seemed… somehow… even more terrifying, even colder and more absolute than Uchiha Madara's had been back in the old days!

Fight?

Fight that?

How could I possibly fight?! This isn't bravery! This isn't how you commit glorious suicide! This is just… STUPID!

Just then.

A calm voice, laced with a hint of cold, detached amusement, came from within the glowing brow-crystal of the blue Susanoo giant. It echoed clearly across the entire, now-silent battlefield.

"Shukaku."

"You seem… very excited to be free."

Shukaku jolted violently, the sound snapping him instantly back to terrified attention.

Arrogance? Gone.

Tyranny? Forgotten.

Destructive urges? Completely suppressed.

At this moment, all the wild, chaotic energy Shukaku usually embodied vanished into thin air, replaced by pure, calculating self-preservation.

Though Shukaku was wild by nature, he wasn't foolish.

Quite the opposite. As a Tailed Beast who had lived for over a thousand years, surviving countless battles and sealings, he understood better than anyone what it meant to assess the situation, recognize overwhelming power, and avoid unnecessary harm.

To stubbornly resist now? Against this?

That wasn't bravery; that was actively seeking death! Or worse, resealing!

In less than a single, terrified instant, Shukaku made the wisest, most pragmatic decision of his long existence.

His originally ferocious, monstrously violent, huge sandy face, with an unbelievable, almost comical speed, instantly squeezed itself into… an extremely fawning, ingratiating, pathetic smile.

His wide, jagged mouth, stretched almost literally from ear to ear, tried desperately to curl upwards at the corners, forming a bizarre, comical, and utterly groveling grin.

His giant, clawed paw, suddenly unsure of what to do, lifted hesitantly and gave a small, awkward, almost shy wave in Uchiha Akira's (Susanoo's) direction.

"Ah… Ah haha… ha…" Shukaku let out a dry, nervous laugh that sounded like rocks grinding together.

"Misunderstanding! Yes! It's all just a big misunderstanding!" His voice boomed, but the terror was evident.

"I… I'm not excited! Not at all! I was just… stretching! Yes! Stretching after waking up! Long nap, you know!"

As Shukaku spoke, he even seriously, awkwardly twisted his enormous, sandy waist, making a loud creaking sound like shifting dunes.

"You see? After sleeping sealed up for so long, my old bones get awfully stiff. Just working out the kinks!"

Inside the Susanoo, Uchiha Akira watched Shukaku's clumsy, terrified performance with cold interest, saying nothing.

Silence. Sometimes, silence was the greatest pressure.

Shukaku's cold sweat… no, his cold sand, instantly began streaming down his face in torrents.

What do I do, what do I do! he screamed internally. Who IS this guy?! Why in the nine hells did the Hidden Sand Village provoke such a MONSTER?!

These idiots! These absolute MORONS! Didn't they even check who the enemy was before dragging me out into this mess?!

Shukaku's golden eyes darted around frantically, looking for any possible escape route. He immediately thought of a way to potentially save himself.

No, forget them! I need to get out of here! Quickly!

I finally got out after all these years! I refuse to be caught and sealed up again right away! Especially not by another damn Uchiha!

Shukaku cautiously, slowly, began to take a small step back, his giant foot sinking slightly into the ravaged sand.

"Uh… well! You look busy! Very busy! Please, continue being busy! Don't mind little old me!"

"I was just… passing by! Yes, just passing through the neighborhood!"

As Shukaku spoke, he continued to cautiously, inch by agonizing inch, shuffle backward, his fawning smile plastered awkwardly on his face.

"I won't bother you anymore! Really! I… I'm leaving now! Yes! Definitely leaving now! Goodbye!"

Having said that, he abruptly spun around. His massive, hundred-meter-tall body, with an agility completely unsuited to his size and composition, took off running!

He fled, kicking up huge clouds of sand, scrambling away from the Susanoo as fast as his sandy legs could carry him.

This absolutely surreal scene left everyone present completely, utterly dumbfounded.

In the distance, within the Konoha army formation.

The two thousand elite Konoha ninja, who had tensed up, gripping their weapons, already becoming highly alert and preparing for an earth-shattering, apocalyptic battle upon seeing the legendary Tailed Beast appear…

Were now just… staring. Mouths agape.

But... what did they just see?

The Tailed Beast. Shukaku the One-Tail. A legendary symbol of natural disaster, uncontrollable destruction, a being capable of leveling entire nations...

In front of their Hokage-sama... acted like a terrified primary school student caught red-handed by the strictest teacher after doing something horribly wrong?

That fawning, pathetic smile!

That figure fleeing in utter, comedic panic!

Is… is that really a Tailed Beast? The fearsome monster from the history scrolls?

"Can… can one person… truly be this powerful?" a young Uchiha whispered, his Sharingan spinning unconsciously, trying to process the unbelievable sight.

Nara Shikaku, watching from the command post alongside Tsunade, looked at the colossal purple Susanoo still hovering silently over the battlefield. His mind, usually sharp and analytical, was filled with nothing but endless, profound shock.

"Even the legendary Tailed Beast… can only surrender at the mere sight of him…"

And on the other side. On the crumbling walls of Sunagakure.

The Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, stared blankly at the scene. He watched Shukaku, his village's last desperate hope, fleeing in terror. He was completely, utterly petrified.

The wild, desperate joy that had flared on his face just moments before hadn't fully faded. It remained frozen there, locked in place, now looking incredibly, tragically comical.

What... what did he just witness?

Sunagakure's last hope. Their ultimate weapon. The symbol of their village's power.

The Tailed Beast, Ichibi Shukaku!

In front of that man... had backed down?

And not just backed down. Had groveled. Had fawned. And then had run away like a terrified child! So completely! So decisively!

Rasa felt his entire worldview, his understanding of power, of the Tailed Beasts, of Konoha... violently shatter.

"It's a lie, isn't it…" he whispered, his voice trembling.

"This… this must be a genjutsu… A mass hallucination…"

Rasa's body began to tremble violently, uncontrollably. His lips quivered, but he was unable to utter a single coherent word. Despair, absolute and final, crushed him.

It wasn't just him.

All the surviving Hidden Sand Village ninja, scattered across the walls and rooftops, witnessed this scene.

Their minds were left completely blank. Empty. Devoid of thought or hope.
