Chapter 233 - No Choice Left

Chapter 233: No Choice Left

The darkness, absolute and all-consuming, lingered for a moment that stretched into an eternity. It had swallowed sound, light, and even thought.

Then, after only a few tens of seconds that felt like hours, the oppressive void completely dissipated, receding like an impossible tide.

Only the hundred-meter-tall Perfect Susanoo remained. Clad in ethereal purple armor, wielding a colossal katana flickering with crackling black lightning, it stood silently, terribly, between heaven and earth. A god of destruction, impassive and absolute.

[Inorin's Note: Susanoo (須佐能乎) is the ultimate ability of the Mangekyō Sharingan, a gigantic, humanoid avatar made of the user's chakra. Its 'Perfect' form is the final, most powerful stage.]

Below it, arrayed on the sand dune, the two thousand elite Konoha ninja all maintained the same posture – heads craned back, faces tilted upwards, bodies unmoving, frozen in sheer, unadulterated awe.

A brief, profound silence hung heavy in the air, thicker even than the preceding darkness.

Then, someone – no one knew who, perhaps a grizzled veteran Jōnin, perhaps a fresh-faced Chūnin – was the first to break free from the extreme, paralyzing shock.

He threw his head back and roared, a raw, primal sound of pure, unrestrained elation and worship, pouring every ounce of his being into the cry!

"OH OH OH OH OH—!!"

This single roar acted like a lit fuse, instantly triggering a massive chain reaction throughout the disciplined ranks!

"LONG LIVE LORD HOKAGE!!"

"KONOHA WILL WIN!!"

"UNRIVALED!!"

"OH OH OH OH OH—!!"

Cheers like a mountain collapsing, like a tsunami crashing onto a shore, rose violently to the sky! The disciplined formations momentarily broke as shinobi cheered, wept, and embraced, united by the terrifying, god-like power they had just witnessed annihilating Sunagakure's forward defenses.

Their fear was replaced by absolute, fanatical conviction. With such a leader, how could they possibly lose?

The next morning. Dawn broke, painting the endless desert sky in pale shades of pink and orange.

The sandstorm continued, a relentless, gritty wind that whipped across the dunes, erasing tracks and stinging exposed skin.

Baki's lips were chapped raw, oozing blood where he had bitten through them in exertion. His throat felt like sandpaper.

The four Sunagakure Jōnin trailing behind him were in even worse shape. Their faces were sallow, masks of exhaustion under layers of sand. Their eyes were deeply sunken, unfocused.

They had not slept. Not for a second.

From the moment they received the Kazekage's desperate order, they had been running for their lives, pushing their bodies far past the point of exhaustion, fueled only by adrenaline and the terrifying message they carried.

[Must reach the village... Must warn Lord Rasa... Konoha... Akira...]

"Baki-sama…"

The only sensor-type ninja in the small, desperate team spoke, his voice a hoarse, ragged whisper. His finger trembled violently as he pointed towards the hazy horizon ahead.

"Just… just behind that next large dune… there's… a huge… an impossibly huge chakra reaction! Hundreds… no, thousands of signatures!"

Hope, sharp and desperate, surged through the exhausted shinobi. Their spirits lifted momentarily. Pushing through the crushing fatigue, they scrambled up the towering sand dune, their worn sandals sinking deep with every agonizing step.

They reached the crest.

The next second, all five of them stood rooted to the spot, their momentary hope instantly evaporating, replaced by a cold, numbing despair far worse than exhaustion.

"What…?" Baki whispered, his voice barely audible above the howling wind.

"What… is that?"

Not far away, nestled in a depression between several large dunes, a sprawling cluster of buildings quietly sprawled. Wooden structures. Watchtowers. Barracks. A fortified wall.

Buildings that shouldn't exist. Buildings that couldn't exist here, in the barren heart of the desert, hundreds of kilometers from the nearest water source or forest.

Yet, there they were. Solid. Real. Flying Konoha banners.

"Wood… Wood Release…"

Baki's Adam's apple bobbed with difficulty. He swallowed dryly, the horrifying realization dawning.

"It's… it's the Wood Release of the First Hokage… Senju Hashirama…"

[Inorin's Note: Wood Release (木遁, Mokuton) is the legendary kekkei genkai of the First Hokage, capable of creating life, forests, and even wooden structures out of raw chakra.]

One of the Jōnin behind him whimpered. "They… they built a town-sized forward operating base… out of thin air… in the middle of the desert? Overnight?"

The strategic implications were staggering. Devastating.

This meant that Konoha, under Uchiha Akira, now possessed the terrifying, god-like ability to conduct indefinite, sustained military operations in any extreme environment!

Logistics!

The brutal, unforgiving reality of desert warfare – the need for water, supplies, shelter – this fatal shackle, which was enough to drag down even the mightiest army operating in the Land of Wind...

It no longer existed for the current Konoha!

[The delay tactic… The Kazekage's plan to bleed them dry in the desert… It's useless! Utterly useless!] Baki's mind reeled in despair.

Before they could fully process the shock, or even think of retreating, shadowy figures flickered into existence around them.

Konoha sensor ninja had detected their approach. A full patrol squad, clad in Konoha's standard flak jackets, instantly surrounded them, kunai drawn.

After a tense standoff, Baki, recognizing the futility of resistance, stated their intentions – they were envoys from the Kazekage seeking an audience with the Hokage.

Suspicious but following protocol, the Konoha patrol escorted Baki and his four exhausted companions into the newly-grown, impossible wooden fortress.

They were led through bustling streets made of wood, past barracks filled with resting Konoha shinobi, finally arriving at the central command post – a large, sturdy building that looked like it had stood there for years, not hours.

Inside, the air was cool, smelling faintly of sap. Uchiha Akira sat behind a simple wooden desk, his Rinnegan eyes impassive. Nara Shikaku and Tsunade stood nearby, observing.

"Sunagakure Special Envoy, Baki," he announced, forcing his voice to remain steady despite the trembling in his legs. He bowed deeply, performing the formal salute to Uchiha Akira. "Greets the Fifth Hokage-sama."

Akira didn't return the pleasantry. His gaze was cold, analytical.

"Speak."

The single word hung in the air, heavy with power.

"What are you here for?"

Baki took a deep, shuddering breath, forcibly suppressing the overwhelming fear that threatened to paralyze him. He recalled Kazekage Rasa's desperate script, the feigned outrage, the appeal to their 'alliance'.

He raised his head, forcing himself to look directly into Uchiha Akira's terrifying eyes.

"Hokage-sama!"

Baki's voice was deliberately raised, carefully modulated to convey anger and utter incomprehension.

"I represent the Fourth Kazekage-sama, Lord Rasa, to question Konoha!"

"Sunagakure and Konoha have been allies for generations! Our villages share a treaty! Not long ago, during the Chūnin Exams, we even fought side by side against a common foe!"

"Why?! Why is Konoha breaking its solemn promise?! Why are you brazenly launching a full-scale, unprovoked invasion of my sovereign Land of Wind?! Why have you destroyed all our border outposts and murdered our shinobi?!"

He slammed his fist onto his chest.

"This is a blatant violation of the alliance treaty! This is declaring war… on your ally, Sunagakure!"

Baki's performance was nothing short of brilliant. He perfectly portrayed an angry, confused, and betrayed ninja, demanding answers from a treacherous ally.

However, after Uchiha Akira finished listening patiently, a faint, almost imperceptible, playful smile appeared on his face.

Akira did not answer Baki's accusations directly. Instead, he asked a simple, cutting question in return.

"The Third Shinobi World War."

His voice was quiet, but it silenced Baki instantly.

"Did Sunagakure not actively tear up the alliance treaty then, siding with Iwagakure against us?"

Baki's carefully constructed expression faltered. Cold sweat prickled his brow. He immediately retorted, falling back on his script. "That... that was all in the past! A decision made by the previous Kazekage under duress! Now, Sunagakure and Konoha are the most friendly of allies! We proved that during the exams!"

Akira smiled contemptuously, a flash of cold amusement in his eyes.

[If I hadn't known about the 'Konoha Crush Plan' that Sunagakure, under this Kazekage's command, orchestrated during those very same Chūnin Exams... I would have almost believed him.]

[Inorin's Note: The Konoha Crush was a plan concocted by Orochimaru (then allied with Suna) and Rasa to invade Konoha during the final phase of the Chūnin Exams. While Orochimaru betrayed Suna, Suna's initial intent was hostile.]

Although Orochimaru ultimately led and then betrayed that incident, it was undeniable that Sunagakure had come with a detailed plan to invade Konoha, using the exams as cover.

"I'll tell you why we are here, Baki," Akira's voice suddenly became cold, devoid of any previous amusement.

"Because your Sunagakure is greedy. And foolish. And treacherous."

"Now, you come here to question me, why I violated the alliance?"

Akira laughed, a short, harsh, humorless sound.

"So, Sunagakure is allowed to break promises, plot invasions, and betray allies whenever it suits you… but we, Konoha, are not allowed to take the initiative when we see an opportunity?"

"What kind of hypocritical, self-serving logic is that?"

He stood up slowly, his presence filling the room.

"I, Uchiha Akira, am not a naive old man like the Third Hokage. I have no interest in playing your pointless games of political balance, or engaging in any more of your hypocritical, worthless alliances."

He leaned forward slightly, his Rinnegan pinning Baki in place.

"Here, in my era, there is only one rule."

"Weakness… is the original sin."

"And given Sunagakure's excellent performance of treachery in the Third Great War, and your recent plotting with Orochimaru… I hereby formally inform you:"

"Konoha unilaterally, and permanently, terminates all alliances and treaties with Sunagakure."

"From this moment forward, we are enemies."

Cold sweat poured down Baki's forehead like a waterfall. His carefully prepared script, his diplomatic maneuvering, his desperate attempt to stall… it all crumbled to dust.

He had envisioned countless possibilities for the negotiation, countless arguments and counter-arguments.

But he had never, ever expected that the other party would be so direct. So brutal. Completely tearing apart all the hypocritical masks of diplomacy in an instant!

Without even offering a shred of room for maneuver! No demands, no negotiations, just... termination.

"H-Hokage-sama!"

Baki's voice was already laced with uncontrollable trembling. He fell back on Rasa's final, desperate threat.

"What you are doing… this is tantamount to provoking the Fourth Shinobi World War! At that time, Konoha will not only face our Sunagakure!"

He forced himself to meet Akira's gaze.

"Iwagakure! Kumogakure! They will never sit idly by and watch Konoha break the balance of the Ninja World! They will unite against you!"

"Oh?"

Uchiha Akira raised a single, elegant eyebrow.

"Are you threatening me?"

He chuckled again, that cold, unnerving sound.

Akira stood up fully and walked slowly, deliberately, step by step, around the desk towards the trembling Baki.

He stopped directly in front of him, looming over him.

"Do you truly think," Akira asked, his voice a soft, dangerous whisper, "that I haven't already prepared for the possibility… no, the inevitability… of being an enemy of the entire Ninja World at the same time?"

He leaned down slightly, his Rinnegan seeming to pierce Baki's very soul.

"I'll say it here today, envoy of the Sand."

"You, Sunagakure, only have two choices left."

"First: Surrender. Unconditionally. Disband Sunagakure as an independent hidden village. All ninja merge into Konoha's structure, becoming… Konoha's subservient 'Clan of Sand'."

Akira paused, letting the utter humiliation of the first option sink in.

"Second…"

In Akira's Rinnegan eyes, blood-red tomoe slowly, hypnotically emerged within the purple ripples. The air grew impossibly cold. The icy, suffocating killing intent materialized, pressing down on Baki like a physical weight.

"…Disappear completely from the Ninja World."

Boom!

Baki's brain buzzed, turning completely blank. All thought ceased.

He was completely, utterly stunned. Frozen by terror and disbelief.

[Annexation!]

[Or... Annihilation!]

[This Fifth Hokage's ambition… it wasn't just to weaken Suna… it was actually… to absorb or erase the entire Sunagakure!]

[Was he going to completely wipe Sunagakure from the map? Erase our history? Our culture? Everything?!]

"Ho… Hokage-sama…"

Baki's legs trembled uncontrollably, like reeds in a storm. He could no longer stand steadily under the weight of Akira's presence and the horror of his words. He collapsed onto the wooden floor.

"This matter… this matter is of… of great importance…" he stammered, his diplomatic training completely failing him. "Please… Lord Hokage… please give us a few days to consider… I must… I must immediately return to report this… to Kazekage-sama!"

"Delaying for time?" Akira asked rhetorically, his killing intent receding slightly, though his expression remained utterly cold.

He turned away, no longer looking at the pathetic, broken envoy groveling on the floor.

"No need."

He walked back towards the map, his voice echoing in the silent room.

"Go back. Tell Rasa."

"Tell him he has twenty-four hours."

"At this time tomorrow."

"Konoha's main army will continue its advance. Directly into the hinterlands of the Land of Wind. Towards Sunagakure itself."

Akira paused, his finger tapping the symbol for Sunagakure on the map.

"Tell him to be ready."

"Either to lead the entire village out of the city gates in surrender, and accept Konoha's complete reorganization and absolute control."

"Or…"

Akira turned his head slightly, his gaze utterly devoid of mercy.

"Prepare to face war. Prepare to face… extinction."
