Chapter 17 - Missing Link

The readjustment period was a point in time everyone was well aware of at this point. A point in time that was categorized as civilization beginning to adjust to both the mundane and the supernatural.

During the readjustment period many types of businesses were in disarray and multi billion dollar corporations were enraged. The world had become a blur between the upper, middle, and lower class. This was the rich's worst nightmare and a dream for the lower class.

As the years passed and the readjustment period soon came to an end. The disparities of wealth soon returned and thus began the adaptation period.

The adaptation period was the point humans started to thoroughly adapt to what the new world had become. Humanity had come to terms with the councilors being at the top of society due to the army of faceless that served them. These entities were used as an overwhelming military force that were practically immortal and so vicious that they could tear through flesh or machinery in an instant.

No one dared to defy a government with such power.

The council at this time had finalized the establishment of job quotas, mandated use of sun screens, and made more small adjustments to the education system to prepare the youth for the new world.

All of these changes were humanity's way to adapt to the state the world was currently in. Multi billion dollar corporations soon followed this lead and by the government's approval took over available alternatives to the fields they managed before the shift.

One of these businesses was a highly successful news broadcasting business rebranded as Live-Live-Live which took over most media and journalism outlets across the world. This news broadcasting network specialized in muckraking and after the latest scandal the council had been a part of.

The government would need to clear their name again for public approval to rise to appropriate levels once again.

A middle aged man with short brown hair, brown eyes, pale skin, a cream suit, and a stern expression held on their face sat on a black and white checkered bar stool on a makeshift set. A medium sized camera was positioned close by and analyzed his face before the broadcast was going to begin.

Councilor J shifted his gaze toward the camera's left side embedded with a black cursive typography labeled Live-Live-Live.

The camera positioned close to him would pay attention to details in his body language, such as his blood pressure, his heart rate, excessive sweat, and any other small details to deduce if he was lying.

Councilor J regardless of whatever had occurred recently could not be exposed on national television for misconduct. A councilor being exposed live on television and losing public approval would lead to the experiment failing.

The experiment failing would lead the world to succumb to a fate far worse than death. A fate in which the creator would show no mercy to the inhabitants of this world.

The events of what happened began to ring in his mind. The twins had blown their cover on a stealth mission and had been exposed to the public. How was he supposed to explain himself out of this one?

Councilor J took one more look around the makeshift set around him which contained another checkered black and white bar stool nearby him and a green screen.

The more the middle aged man thought of it.

The set in itself was contradictory. This set was placed in a warehouse, hours away from the nearest town. This location while being so far out of reach from society could spread news to the public in an instant.

Councilor J held a grim expression at that thought as a news reporter from Live-Live-Live walked onto the set to interview him.

The news reporter was young with a tan complexion, had long wavy black hair, a dark red suit paired with a white tie, and red pants.

The woman's grey eyes had an almost sinister gleam to them.

Mara says with a devilish grin spreading on her face, "Shall we begin, Councilor J?"

Councilor J nodded in agreement, "Let's begin."

Mara snaps her fingers as a led light to the right side of the camera flickers red indicating that the broadcast was live.

Mara says, "Thank you for making some time to join me, Councilor J."

Councilor J pauses as he chooses his words carefully, "Of course. I wanted to speak on this matter as soon as possible."

Mara leans back dramatically as she almost falls off her bar stool.

Mara sneers, "There have been so many allegations against you lately."

Councilor J says, "Allegations are just that. Allegations. Accusations with no proof backing them up."

He coughs, "I suggest we talk about the more pressing matter at hand."

Mara frowns, "How boring… One of these days we will get you to address what the viewers want to hear the most."

Mara snaps her fingers twice as an image becomes projected through the camera onto the green screen. A flesh monster with two heads with the middle of its body containing sixty four teeth appeared on display.

Mara says, "What are your thoughts, Councilor J? This monstrosity was found to just be frolicking in Token town on Eastwood street."

Councilor J holds an empty expression on his face, "I had no idea these creatures existed until recently. I believe these creatures may have started to appear because of society adjusting to this new world."

Mara looks over at her camera as the device analyzes his face, "Not a lie, okay."

Mara sighs, "So why is this happening now? More importantly, how will the council get rid of this monster?"

Councilor J holds a disgusted expression on his face as he gazes at the picture of the monster once more, "These creatures must want to make sure humanity doesn't adapt to the world as it is right now. I will make sure this creature and any others in the future brought into the spotlight are dealt with through public execution."

Councilor J looks toward the camera, "I have had a team of faceless retrieve and capture the creature showcased on screen. These monsters will not be alive for long, rest assured."

Mara looks toward her camera, "Not a lie again. Tell me councilor J, are you a good liar or an honest man?"

Councilor J says plainly, "I am as any other man."

Mara says, "Lie."

Councilor J stands up as he smiles politely, "Just wanted to make sure that device of yours worked. I am no ordinary man but a member of the council."

Mara shakes her head, "Thank you for joining me and clearing up all of our concerns regarding this matter."

Councilor J says, "No problem."

The middle aged man glances toward his digital watch on his right hand as a large green bar was displayed on the screen symbolizing high public approval. It looked like humanity would be safe for now at the very least.
