Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Safehouse Is Compromised

Rain fell steadily throughout the afternoon. The abandoned apartment building was silent. For the first time in days, Kai thought they had found a place where they could rest, if only for one night.

The feeling did not last.

Lira stood beside the broken window, quietly watching the empty street below. Without warning, the silver ribbon around her wrist began to glow. Her expression stiffened.

"Kai." Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Kai looked up immediately. "What is it?"

She didn't answer at once. Her eyes remained fixed on the street. "They found us."

Mira hurried to the window. At first, she saw nothing. Then dark figures emerged from the rain. One stepped into the street. Then another. Soon, more appeared from different alleys, moving with calm, disciplined precision.

None of them spoke. None of them hurried.

Kai's expression darkened as he recognized the emblem on their long black coats. Hunters.

"They tracked us?"

Mira frowned. "We've only been here since last night."

Lira slowly shook her head. "No. They've been following us."

Kai's mind flashed back to Adrian's words. "Every journey reveals something." His jaw tightened. "We walked them straight here."

Outside, the Hunters spread through the surrounding buildings. Several removed small silver devices from their belts. Blue rings of light swept across the streets.

One Hunter spoke into a communicator. "Sector Three secure."

Another voice answered. "Sector Four secure."

A third reported, "Echo signature confirmed." A pause. "Kai."

The room became completely silent.

Lira turned toward him. "They know exactly where you are."

A sharp metallic crash echoed from the floor below. Someone had forced open the building's entrance.

Mira's expression hardened. "They're already inside."

Kai instinctively reached for the steel pipe resting against the wall. His fingers tightened around it. A second later, he slowly lowered it. That weapon had saved him before. It would not save them today.

A familiar blue screen appeared before his eyes.

The screen faded. Kai drew a slow breath.

Inside his mind, the Echoes were already stirring.

Reginald spoke first. Stay calm.

Marcus followed. Protect your allies.

Then the third Echo whispered. Kill them.

Kai clenched his fists. "Be quiet..."

Heavy footsteps echoed from the stairwell. One floor below. Then another. Steady. Measured. Drawing closer with every passing second.

Lira quietly drew the silver knife hidden beneath her cloak. Mira knelt beside her oversized backpack and unzipped it. She removed two compact metal devices covered in unfamiliar markings.

Kai glanced at them. "You've been carrying weapons this whole time?"

Mira gave him a quick smile. "I told you. I packed the essentials."

A deafening crash shook the apartment. The wooden door splintered inward. Dust filled the room.

A Hunter stepped through the broken doorway. Three more followed behind him.

The leader's voice was calm. "Echo Weaver. You are surrounded. There is nowhere left to run."

Kai exchanged a single look with Lira. Then with Mira. No one needed to say another word. The three of them prepared to fight.

The broken door creaked as the Hunters entered. Four of them spread through the apartment with practiced precision. Each carried a short silver blade at their side and a compact restraint device clipped to their belt. They did not move like soldiers rushing into battle. They moved like professionals carrying out a routine arrest.

The Hunter standing in front lowered his weapon slightly. "Echo Weaver. You will come with us. You will not be harmed if you cooperate."

Kai slowly stepped forward. "And if I don't?"

The Hunter met his eyes. "Then we will complete our mission by force."

For a heartbeat, no one moved.

Kai tightened his grip on the steel pipe. "I can't go with you."

The Hunter nodded once. "As expected." He raised his hand.

The Hunters attacked. One rushed toward Lira. Another charged at Mira. The remaining two closed in on Kai.

The first blade flashed toward his shoulder. Reginald's Echo reacted instantly. Kai shifted sideways with effortless precision. The blade sliced through empty air.

Marcus' voice followed. Counter. Kai's body moved almost on its own. The steel pipe struck the Hunter's wrist. His silver blade flew across the room.

Before Kai could retreat, the third Echo surged forward. Don't stop. Break him.

A violent impulse flooded Kai's mind. His muscles tensed. The steel pipe began another swing.

Reginald interrupted. Enough.

Marcus added sharply. Maintain control.

Kai forced his arm to stop. That single hesitation was enough. A Hunter drove his boot into Kai's ribs. The impact threw him across the room. He crashed into a broken table.

"Kai!" Lira shouted. She intercepted a Hunter's attack with her silver knife before slipping beneath another strike.

Across the room, Mira threw one of her metal devices onto the floor. A loud pop echoed through the apartment. Thick gray smoke erupted, filling every corner of the room.

The Hunters reacted immediately. "Maintain formation. Do not lose visual contact."

Hidden inside the smoke, Kai struggled to breathe. The voices inside his head grew louder. Reginald. Marcus. The Unknown Echo. Each pulled him in a different direction.

A familiar blue screen flashed before his eyes.

Kai's breathing became uneven. "No..."

His body suddenly moved. Not because he wanted it to. Because the Echoes did.

He twisted away from another attack before he even saw it coming. He spun. The steel pipe struck one Hunter's weapon aside. At the same time, his mouth opened. Two voices emerged together. One was Kai's. The other was deeper. Older. Cold.

"Fall back... secure the eastern corridor."

The overlapping voices echoed through the apartment. Every Hunter froze for a split second. So did Lira. So did Mira.

Kai stared at them in horror. "I..." His own voice overlapped again. "We advance." The deeper voice continued at the same time. "...eliminate resistance."

Kai grabbed his head. "Stop..."

The Unknown Echo laughed. You cannot silence us forever.

Heavy footsteps echoed from the stairwell again. More Hunters were entering the building.

"We're surrounded!" Mira shouted.

Lira glanced toward the shattered window. "The fire escape! It's our only way out!"

Kai forced himself to stand. Every movement felt like a struggle for control. Reginald steadied his reflexes. Marcus guided his timing. The Unknown Echo fueled every strike with ruthless aggression.

Kai no longer knew where his instincts ended and the Echoes began.

"Go!" he shouted.

Mira climbed through the broken window first and landed on the metal fire escape. Lira followed close behind.

Kai turned back just long enough to hold the Hunters off. Three rushed him together. He ducked beneath the first strike. Blocked the second. Knocked the third Hunter off balance with a sharp swing of the steel pipe. Then he leaped through the broken window.

The fire escape rattled violently beneath his weight. The three of them raced down the rusted stairs into the narrow alley below. Rain soaked the streets. Behind them, Hunters poured from the apartment building.

Lira suddenly stopped. The silver ribbon around her wrist shone brighter than ever before. Her eyes widened.

A thin black thread slowly wrapped itself around Kai's body like drifting smoke. It coiled around his arms, his chest, his neck.

Lira's face lost all color. She recognized it immediately. A Death Thread. It had never appeared around Kai before. Now it clung to him like a shadow that refused to let go. And it was growing darker.
