Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Hunter Mark

ECHO THI

The underground tunnels were quieter than before. The panic that had swept through the market was gone. Only the steady sound of footsteps echoed through the narrow passage as people returned to their daily lives.

Kai walked beside Lira and Mira without saying a word. His mind was still on the message that had appeared after the strange golden light. This Echo should not exist in this world. No matter how many times he replayed the words in his head, they still made no sense.

He quietly opened his System.

Everything looked normal. There was no mention of the impossible Echo.

Kai frowned. "So now you're pretending nothing happened."

Reginald answered calmly. "I have no record of the Echo detected in the previous incident."

Kai sighed. "I wasn't really expecting you to."

Marcus finally spoke. "I sensed danger."

Kai looked ahead. "Can you tell where it came from?"

"No."

That single word made Kai even more uneasy. If neither Echo knew what they had encountered, then whatever had reached him in Chapter 10 was far beyond anything he understood.

The tunnel widened. A familiar underground station came into view. Unlike the crowded market they had left behind, this place felt like a real town. Old subway cars had become homes. Wooden bridges connected the platforms. Warm lights hung from steel beams overhead. Children chased one another between the shelters while mechanics repaired broken generators. The smell of fresh bread drifted through the air.

Kai stopped walking. "I almost forgot the world was ending."

Mira smiled. "People still have to eat."

Lira nodded. "They still have to live."

As they entered the settlement, several people greeted Lira warmly. "You're back." "We heard about the market." "I'm glad you're safe."

Lira politely greeted each of them.

Kai noticed. "You've been here a lot."

"I help when I can."

Mira laughed. "She says that like everyone doesn't already know her."

Lira ignored the comment.

An elderly woman waved Kai over. "You look tired."

Kai smiled. "I probably do."

She handed him a piece of warm bread. "No charge."

Kai hesitated. "I don't have anything to give you."

She smiled kindly. "You'll repay someone else someday."

Kai accepted the bread. "Thank you."

As they continued walking, Kai noticed something unusual. No one openly displayed an Echo Crystal. No one talked about Echo abilities. Everyone seemed careful with their words.

He looked at Lira. "Why is everyone hiding?"

"They aren't hiding." She answered quietly. "They're surviving."

Kai frowned. "What do you mean?"

Lira glanced around before lowering her voice. "Echo users don't reveal themselves unless they have no choice."

"Why?"

"Because Hunters don't stop looking."

Kai's expression became serious. "So anyone with an Echo becomes a target."

Lira nodded. "The stronger your Echo, the more valuable you become."

Kai instinctively looked at his hands. His grip tightened around the piece of bread. For the first time, he truly understood why the System had warned him to protect his identity.

A loud whistle echoed across the station. Several guards walked past, carefully checking every entrance into the settlement.

Kai watched them. "They're expecting trouble."

"They always are," Lira replied. "The Hunters have scouts everywhere."

Kai looked toward one of the tunnel walls. Something caught his attention. Scratched into the old concrete was a strange black symbol. It looked like a circle split by three jagged lines. The mark was fresh. Someone had carved it recently.

Kai slowed to a stop. "What is that?"

Lira followed his gaze. The moment she saw the symbol, the color drained from her face. She walked toward the wall without saying a word. Then she reached out and lightly touched the mark. Her hand trembled.

Mira's smile disappeared. "No..."

Kai looked between them. "What is it?"

Lira slowly turned toward him. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "...It's a Hunter Mark."

Kai stared at the symbol carved into the concrete wall. It looked simple. Just a black circle divided by three jagged lines. If Lira had not reacted, he would have walked past it without a second thought.

He looked at her. "What is a Hunter Mark?"

Lira did not answer immediately. She kept her eyes on the symbol as if she expected it to move. Finally, she spoke. "The Hunters leave these marks when they begin tracking someone."

Kai frowned. "So they know we're here?"

"They know someone is here."

Mira stepped closer. "I've only seen one of these before."

Kai looked at her. "What happened?"

"The shelter was abandoned within two days." Her usual smile was gone. "No one stayed long enough to find out what happened next."

Kai felt a chill run through him. He looked around the Lower District. Children were still playing. Families were still eating together. Mechanics continued repairing broken machines. None of them seemed to notice the mark.

"They don't know."

Lira slowly shook her head. "The fewer people who know, the less panic there is."

Kai looked back at the symbol. "So what do we do?"

"We erase it."

Mira pulled a small metal tool from her satchel and began scraping at the wall. The black lines faded until the concrete looked ordinary again. She brushed the dust from her hands. "There."

Kai studied the wall. "So that's it?"

Lira remained serious. "No. The mark is only a message."

Kai frowned. "A message?"

She nodded. "It tells other Hunters that someone in this area has been classified."

Kai's heartbeat quickened. "Classified?"

"Yes. They don't always know the person's name. They don't always know what the person's abilities are. But once a mark appears, the search has already begun."

Silence settled over the three of them.

Kai remembered the warning from his System. Protect Your Identity. It finally made sense. The Hunters were not wandering randomly through the city. They searched. They watched. They waited.

Reginald spoke quietly inside Kai's mind. "The probability that the mark refers to you has increased."

Kai answered silently. "I know."

Marcus added, "Remain alert."

Kai took a slow breath. He looked around the station again. Everyone was living as normally as they could. No one realized danger had already entered their home.

A young boy ran past, laughing as he chased a homemade wooden toy. His mother smiled and called after him. For a moment, Kai saw the city the way it used to be. People trying to live ordinary lives. People who deserved another tomorrow.

He quietly made a decision. "If the Hunters come..."

Lira looked at him.

"...they can't find this place because of me."

Lira studied his face. "You don't know that the mark is yours."

Kai nodded. "I don't. But after everything that's happened, I can't ignore the possibility."

Mira folded her arms. "Then we'll make sure they don't catch you."

Kai smiled. "You make that sound easy."

"It isn't." She grinned. "But easy things are boring."

Kai laughed softly. For the first time since they met, the three of them stood together without awkwardness. Not strangers. Not quite friends. But people beginning to trust one another.

As evening settled over the Lower District, lanterns were lit across the underground station. Life continued. Meals were shared. Children returned to their families. Guards quietly took their positions near the tunnels.

Far above the city, hidden on the roof of a shattered office building, a lone figure lowered a small black viewing device. The screen displayed only one message.

Hunter Mark Confirmed

Target Classification Accepted

Observation Phase Complete

The figure pressed a button on the side of the device. A calm voice answered. "Report."

"The mark has been acknowledged."

A brief silence followed. Then the voice spoke again. "Do not engage. Continue surveillance. We need confirmation before retrieval."

The connection ended. The figure looked toward the underground entrance one last time. Then disappeared into the darkness.

Deep below, Kai suddenly paused. He looked back toward the tunnel. For a brief moment, he felt as though someone was watching him. The feeling disappeared almost instantly. He said nothing. But he could not shake the feeling that whatever had begun with the impossible Echo had now become something much larger.
