The moment the Echo Hunter moved again, Kai turned and ran. The suppression field was still affecting him, but it was weaker now. His body felt heavy, like running through water, but it was possible.
Behind him, the Hunter did not rush. He walked. That was worse, because it meant he was confident.
Kai's mind worked fast. The Echo inside him spoke clearly.
"Do not run in a straight line."
Kai did not argue. He turned sharply into a narrow street between two broken buildings. A second later, something struck the ground where he had been running. The pavement exploded outward.
Kai stumbled but kept moving.
"Okay," he muttered. "So he can do that."
"Yes," the Echo replied.
Kai glanced back once. The Hunter was still walking forward, adjusting his direction without hesitation.
Kai swallowed. "He is not even trying."
"He does not need to," the Echo said. "You are not yet classified as a threat."
Kai did not like that sentence. He ran deeper into the broken part of the city. The buildings here were half collapsed. Floating debris drifted in the air, moving slowly as if gravity was confused.

Kai frowned. "Zone? So the city is divided into areas now?"
"Yes," the Echo said. "Reality is separating into unstable regions."
Kai almost laughed. "That is the worst explanation I have ever heard."
A sound cut through the air behind him. Not loud. Focused. Kai ducked instinctively. A thin line of energy passed above him and cut through a metal pole like paper. The pole fell slowly, then snapped apart before hitting the ground.
Kai kept running.
"I am going to die," he said.
"You are statistically likely to die if you continue current behavior," the Echo confirmed.
Kai groaned. "You are very encouraging."
"I am accurate."
Kai turned another corner and slid behind a broken delivery truck. He pressed his back against it and tried to control his breathing.
Footsteps approached. Slow. Measured. The Hunter was closing in.
Kai looked around quickly. There was no clear escape route. Only rubble, broken streets, and drifting debris.

The Hunter narrowed his eyes.

For the first time, the Hunter paused. Kai saw it. That small hesitation.
He moved. Not forward. Sideways. At the exact moment the next suppression pulse activated.
The air struck where he had been standing. But Kai was already gone. He rolled behind a broken wall and stood up immediately.
His heart was pounding. But he was alive.

He focused again. The Echo activated. His perception sharpened. The world became clearer in small ways. Not slowed. Just understood differently.
Kai stepped out again. The Hunter struck. Kai moved before the attack landed.
This time, he was not guessing. He was reading.
He grabbed a piece of broken metal mid-motion and threw it. Not at the Hunter. At the ground beside him.
The impact caused dust and debris to explode upward. The Hunter shifted his attention for a fraction of a second. Kai used that moment.
He ran. Not away randomly. Toward a collapsed subway entrance. A way down.

Kai nodded. "Good enough for me."
Behind him, the Hunter reacted too late. A pulse of pressure hit the street, but Kai had already dropped into the broken stairwell. He slid down concrete steps, hitting the ground hard but alive.
Darkness swallowed him. For the first time since the system appeared, the pressure in the air weakened. Kai lay on the ground, breathing heavily.
Above him, faint light flickered through the broken entrance. Footsteps stopped at the edge above. The Hunter did not follow immediately.
Kai stared at the ceiling.
"I survived," he whispered.
The Echo responded. "For now."
Kai closed his eyes for a moment. Then opened them again.
"I need more Echoes," he said quietly.
Inside him, the voice answered without hesitation. "Yes."
Kai stood up slowly in the dark underground tunnel. And walked deeper into the unknown system beneath the broken city.
