Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The First Choice

The rocks offered little comfort.

But it was better than the shore.

People gathered in small clusters.

Some sat in silence.

Others whispered, voices shaking.

A few stared at their hands like they were expecting something to change.

No one went near the water again.

The man who had been giving directions stood near the center.

Trying to keep things together.

"We need to stay calm," he said. "Panicking won't help anyone."

No one responded.

A groan came from the side.

One of the injured men clutched his leg, breathing unevenly.

"I… I can't move anymore…"

Someone else looked away.

Another frowned.

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

"…We can't carry everyone," a voice muttered.

Too quiet to confront.

Too loud to ignore.

The young man heard it.

But didn't react.

He just watched.

It's starting…

Not the monsters.

Not the lake.

People.

A faint glow caught his attention.

Floating.

Close to the ground.

An orb.

Not just one.

Several.

Scattered.

Drifting slowly, like they had always been there.

People noticed.

"…What is that?"

"…It was here before?"

"…No… I didn't see it…"

One of the injured men reached out.

Hesitated.

"I don't have a choice…" he whispered.

The moment his fingers touched it—

the light collapsed inward.

Not outward.

Into him.

Not blinding

But enough to make everyone flinch.

Then—

silence again.

The man froze.

Breathing hard.

"…I feel…" he muttered.

"…lighter…"

He slowly stood.

The pain didn't disappear.

But it dulled—just enough.

Enough to stand.

Not enough to forget.

Murmurs spread.

"Did you see that?"

"It healed him?"

"No… not healed… but…"

Hope.

Dangerous.

Another person stepped forward.

Then another.

Orbs were touched.

One by one.

Flashes of light.

Short.

Brief.

Changes.

Subtle.

Someone reacted faster than before, catching a falling object without thinking.

Another stood straighter, breathing more steadily.

One flinched—

then stared at their own hands in confusion.

Different.

All of them.

Different.

The young man didn't move.

He watched.

So it's real…

Not random.

Systematic.

A pattern.

He stepped closer to one of the orbs.

It hovered quietly.

Almost waiting.

His hand lifted slightly—

Then stopped.

What if I'm wrong?

What if this changes something… I can't undo?

"…Aren't you going to take it?"

The man from earlier looked at him.

Everyone else already had.

Or was about to.

He looked around.

Some gripped their orbs already.

Others stood frozen, wanting to but not quite able to move.

Then back at the orb near him.

"…We don't really have a choice, do we?"

More to himself than anyone else.

Slowly—

He reached out.

And touched it.

Light.

For a brief second—

everything went quiet.

Then—

something shifted.

Not outside.

Inside.

The words arrived without warning— not heard, not seen, but understood.

[Zodiac Orb Detected]

[Status Panel Unlocked]

The light faded. But something remained. The noise around him felt different. Not louder. Not clearer.Just… connected.Like everything had a current running through it.People.Air.Water.All of it flowing. All of it linked. He couldn't explain it.Couldn't prove it.But he felt it.Like something that had always existed just beyond his reach had quietly shifted — closer. Not complete. Not yet.

He lowered his hand.

but the orb remained.

Floating quietly beside him.

Dimmer now.

Like it had… settled.

"…We need to move soon," someone said.

"Those things earlier might come back."

This time—

more people nodded.

No arguments.

They had seen enough.

The group was smaller now.

Closer.

More cautious.

The man stepped forward again, taking the lead.

"We move together. Stay close. No one wanders off."

No one disagreed.

The young man stayed near the back.

But this time—

his gaze was different.

Not just watching.

Behind them, the lake remained silent.

But no one mistook it for safety anymore.

Ahead—

unknown land.

Unknown dangers.

Unknown people.

And now—

unknown power.

The world had changed.

Not slowly.

All at once.

And somewhere deep inside—

something had begun.
