Chapter 12 - Loose ends

Theodore stiffened as he spotted his target eating carelessly inside the five-star restaurant.

Standing on a window ledge was probably a terrible idea.

Especially with a fucking 15-pound rifle.

His eyes narrowed sharply.

If not for Lucas, he would probably be lying in a comfortable bed right now with a crapload of junk food.

His 'men' ( which was honestly just Cameron ) had warned him that the Don was planning to hire him to murder Dmitri Vassalis, the Greek mafia king.

And more importantly, Mairi's fiancé.

But refusing your Don is not much of an option either. So, he had taken another kill order to pretend to be 'busy'.

And that's what landed him on a windowsill in his boxers and a tank top at 9 pm on a freezing Monday night.

Well, at least it can't get any worse.

A soft droplet fell on Theodore's chest, soaking it wet. The streets were beginning to darken as a drizzle set in, making the grass wet. But it didn't last long.

Within moments, the drizzle turned into a heavy downpour, soaking him from head to toe.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Theodore's vision grew hazy as his target moved in the window. He had already gotten multiple chances to murder him: when he had stepped out of his car, when he had momentarily stepped into the dark alley, when he went to wash his hands in the deserted restaurant's bathroom, but Theodore had passed all of them up to delay the situation just a bit more.

Despite the haze, Theodore could still see the man clearly. He was fat and old and greasy, and his body was covered in artificial golden jewellery. A woman, perhaps his wife, beautiful but modestly dressed, sat alongside him, her eyes staring into her plate. On his other side sat a woman half his age, slightly more boldly dressed, her eyes fixated on the man.

Maybe his daughter.

She got up from her table, her eyes now on the older woman, as she sat heavily on the older man's lap.

Geez, maybe not.

Gary Larson. One of the richest industrialists in the area. From his eyes, he could feel the disgusting smile crawling on his horny face as the woman squirmed in his lap.

He wondered what he had done for a moment before closing off his mind.

That was not his problem.

He rotated his sniper rifle, making sure that the target was in sight. The water was not slowing down, and he could feel his white shirt getting more and more transparent by the second, while his wet hair stuck to his cheeks.

He could just pull the trigger now, but his eyes fell on the woman eating quietly without looking up.

Ok, I'll give you two more minutes.

Luckily, the woman chose that moment to finally get up and go to the bathroom, as the younger woman started kissing the man's neck.

A headshot would probably be riskier.

He sighed before pulling the trigger. The man's head exploded, sending pieces of his skull and blood flying across the room. The woman in his lap jumped out at the impact, her eyes quickly darting back and forth.

He chuckled to himself while dismantling and setting off his weapon. Had he not been so cold, he would probably have stayed there for a while, admiring the view of the city.

He jumped onto the terrace, and then ran down four flights of stairs. He probably had ten minutes before the police came and barricaded the whole area.

Not that I am scared of those idiots.

I'd just prefer it if a lot of people did not see me looking like a freaking wet chicken.

He finally found the main entrance of the run- down building. As an assassin, Theodore preferred such buildings - saved him the entire trouble of going about shooting cameras and stuff.

Light footsteps echoed from somewhere near him.

Shit. Shit. Shit. SHIT.

He managed to throw the rifle into a dark mound in the alley before the figure finally stepped in.

A woman appeared at the other edge of the alley. She was probably a college student in her early twenties. Her clothes also clung to her body from the rain, and she slowly flicked her hair away from her eyes.

"Do I know you ?"

"I came here to visit a friend, but he's not at home. "

"You're Jonathan's friend ?" she asked, although Theodore sensed a bit of hesitation in her voice.

This bitch is messing with me.

"Who's Jonathan? "

"Nobody ", Theodore sensed a relief in her voice," Sorry, this is a sketchy neighborhood. Lots of rapists and murderers just hanging around here ."

Theodore choked internally.

"Wonder why? ", he said," It's a pretty expensive place ."

"Those rich motherfuckers only care about themselves ", the woman said in annoyance, " Normal people don't matter to them. "

Her gaze stopped at Theodore's toned chest, which was just more prominent in the rain-soaked clothes.

He noticed it too and smiled.

"This is my first time seeing you, though ", her cheeks curving upwards in a smile, " Doesn't seem like you care much about your friends."

"Well, I don't usually like being in places like these ", Theodore lied easily.

"I'd probably have to make an exception for here, though. There are a lot of people here who I'd love to see regularly. "

The woman blushed deeply.

You're not from around here, are you?" she asked, folding her arms against the cold.

"Is it obvious?"

"The accent. And nobody smiles that much around here."

"I'll take that as a compliment ".

He paused, looking at the woman in front.

"No wonder he did not call me here before. Motherfucker wants to keep all the beautiful ones for himself. "

"He's an idiot ", the woman agreed.

"So, what are you doing tonight ?"

"You know, work and all."

I need to get out of here.

" You sure you don't want to do anything better tonight ?" She asked, taking a small step towards him.

Shit. This was not how this was supposed to go.

"I'd really love to ", he said, sounding as apologetic as possible, " But tonight's just really busy ."

"Oh, I was starting to think you were interesting ".

Theodore smiled.

"I promise I'm more interesting than Jonathan."

She laughed, shaking her head, before lightly brushing a hand against his chest.

"I think so too."

"Next time I come, I'll definitely take some time out ", he said, though his eyes faltered towards the crosstalk.

"Yeah, well", she said, her eyes narrowing," It was nice to meet you. "

" Me too ", he replied softly.

Theodore waited until the woman walked into her apartment before going to pick up his sniper.

Who said flirting ain't a skill?

By the time Theodore reached home, his body was completely frozen. He changed his clothes and turned on Pride and Prejudice with a bowl of salted popcorn.

The best snack with the best movie.

His phone rang from his pocket. Theodore got up to check it.

Unknown number.

His blood ran cold. As Lynx, he was a person who valued his secrecy above anything. There was no way on Earth an unknown number would call him.

But hadn't it already happened before?

Vixen, the underworld's prodigy, whom he had probably underestimated, had broken through his entire security system and emptied his entire bank account.

Would it be that difficult for her to find his real identity?

Theodore tried to calm himself. There was no reason for Vixen to go snooping around him.

But neither did she have a reason for stealing all his money?

For all he cared about, he'd never gotten on her wrong side.

Or maybe she was working for someone else?

Which was probably worse.

He had no reason to doubt Vixen, but if she was working for somebody...

Not to mention the kind of people she was involved with.

She'd even shown up bare-faced at Mairi's engagement, which meant that she wasn't the least bit scared of him.

He sat on his sofa, his head in his hands, before coming to a final realization.

I need to do something about her.
