Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Last Percent

The hum in Kaelen's chest was dying.

In the Under-Grid, sound was a luxury. The constant grinding of the Spires' massive gears overhead, the hiss of leaking steam pipes, and the distant screams of the "Static"—those who had run out of Flux—formed the soundtrack of his life. But for Kaelen, the only sound that mattered was the internal vibration of his Kinetic Core.

And right now, it sounded like a fading heartbeat.

"Keep your head down, Kael," Jax's voice crackled through the comms. "The Enforcer patrol is passing the Sector 4 checkpoint. If they scan you and see you're under 5%, they'll haul you off to the 'Recycle Camps' before you can blink."

Kaelen pulled his hood lower, his boots splashing through a puddle of oily neon-green water. "I'm at 4.2%, Jax. I don't have enough juice to 'keep my head down.' I need to get these stabilizers to the clinic or the kids in Ward C won't make it through the night."

"You're a fool," Jax hissed, though his voice lacked conviction. "You're burning your life for people who are already ghosts."

"Then I'm a ghost, too," Kaelen muttered.

He reached the alley behind the Apex Medical Depot. High above, the Spires pierced the clouds, glowing with a pristine, golden light. Down here, the only light came from flickering advertisements for synthetic Flux—energy the poor could never afford.

Kaelen looked at the reinforced steel door. A normal human would need a hydraulic ram to break it. A high-tier hero from the Spires would just melt it with a thought.

Kaelen tapped his wrist-gauge. 4.1%.

"Just a spark," he whispered.

He pressed his palm against the cold metal. He didn't push with his muscles; he pushed with his soul. He felt the golden warmth in his chest surge down his arm. It was a painful, searing sensation, like liquid fire moving through his veins.

Clack.

The internal locking mechanism shattered. Kaelen slipped inside, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Every time he used his Flux, a part of him felt like it was being erased.

The interior of the depot was cold and smelled of ozone. He found the crate—labeled 'Kinetic Stabilizers: Property of the Architect Council'. He grabbed it, the heavy metal biting into his palms.

"Movement detected!" a robotic voice boomed from the ceiling.

Red lights flooded the room. Kaelen didn't hesitate. He swung the crate over his shoulder and bolted.

"Stop!"

Two Enforcers in white ceramic armor rounded the corner. Their rifles were already humming, charging with blue Flux energy.

"Don't shoot!" one yelled. "He's a Low-Res. If we hit him with a Pulse, he'll go Static instantly. We need him alive for the work camps."

Kaelen felt a flash of white-hot rage. Work camps. They wanted to turn him into a battery until he was empty, then throw him in the trash.

"Not today," Kaelen growled.

He tapped into his core.

3.5%... 2.0%... 1.0%.

The world slowed down. The Enforcers looked like statues. Kaelen moved in a blur of amber light, weaving between them. He kicked the legs out from under the first guard and slammed the second into a rack of canisters.

But as he reached the exit, the amber light flickered. It didn't just fade—it vanished.

Kaelen hit the ground hard. His lungs felt like they were filled with lead. His heart rhythm stuttered. He tried to stand, but his legs were dead weight.

He looked at his wrist.

0.01%.

The grey fog was rolling in. This was it. The "Stagnation." The moment every resident of the Under-Grid feared. He was becoming a "Static"—a body without a soul.

The Enforcer he had kicked stood up, his face twisted in a sneer behind his visor. He raised his heavy boot and slammed it into Kaelen's ribs.

"Look at you," the Enforcer spat. "Zero Flux. You're not even a person anymore. You're just... equipment."

He raised his rifle, aiming it at Kaelen's head. "Actually, I think I'll save the state the trouble of feeding you."

Kaelen closed his eyes. He thought of the kids at the clinic. He thought of his sister. He thought of the Spires, laughing in the clouds.

I refuse, he thought. If I'm going to die, I'm going to die screaming.

Inside his chest, at the very center of his empty, cold core, something snapped.

It wasn't a hum. It was a roar.

[NOTIFICATION: ANOMALY DETECTED]

[CORE HAS REACHED ABSOLUTE ZERO]

[INITIATING SOVEREIGN REBOUND...]

A shockwave of pure, crystalline energy erupted from Kaelen's body. The Enforcer was thrown back like a ragdoll, his armor shattering into a thousand white shards.

Kaelen stood up. He didn't feel heavy anymore. He felt like he was made of lightning. He looked at his wrist, but the red light was gone. In its place was a glowing, white interface that only he could see.

Kaelen looked at his hands. They were glowing. He looked at the medical crate, still sitting in the middle of the room.

"Jax?" Kaelen said, his voice sounding like two stones grinding together.

"Kael? What happened? Your signal just... it spiked! I thought you exploded!"

"I think," Kaelen said, looking at the broken Enforcer on the floor, "that I just stopped being a ghost."
