Chapter 9 - THE REALIZATION

JAMES POV

The council meeting is the same as always.

Boring. Predictable. Filled with people James no longer trusts. He sits at the head of the table and listens to David present the quarterly budget while his mind tracks numbers he's already verified independently.

Then he watches Iris.

She stands against the back wall exactly where he told her to stand. She's supposed to be invisible. Supposed to be decorative. Supposed to mean nothing.

Instead, she's watching everything.

Her eyes track the numbers as David speaks them. James sees her mentally calculating. He sees her registering when something doesn't fit. Her expression shifts when Elena speaks. Just slightly. Just enough that James catches it because he's been watching her face instead of paying attention to the actual meeting.

She sees it. Whatever is wrong with the numbers, she sees it.

Elena steers the conversation toward territory disputes. Devon brings up a concern about border security. James normally listens carefully but today he's watching his bride track the money with her mind the way a predator tracks prey.

She's not just intelligent.

She's strategic in ways his trained advisors will never be. She's seeing connections they miss. She's understanding patterns that have been hidden in plain sight for months.

When Devon mentions budget concerns more directly, James watches Iris's jaw tighten. Her eyes narrow slightly. Her hands press against her thighs.

She sees something significant.

James feels his entire perspective shift.

This woman is dangerous. Not because she's a threat but because she matters to him now. She matters in ways that compromise his ability to lead. She matters in ways that make him vulnerable.

The meeting ends and the council members file out. James tells them all to leave except Iris.

Wait, he says quietly.

The other council members exchange looks but they obey. Even Elena doesn't protest. When they're gone and the chamber is empty except for the two of them, James stands.

What did you see?

Iris hesitates and he realizes she's trying to decide how much to tell him. How much truth is safe to share with an Alpha who's bought her like property.

The numbers, he says. What do you see in them?

Iris takes a breath.

They're wrong. Territory income doesn't match what it should be based on your merchant contracts. Trade revenue is understated. There are accounts that don't match reports. Someone is moving money.

She speaks carefully like she's weighing every word.

Elena Voss is involved. She's controlling the conversation. Steering it away from financial details. When David gets close to the real numbers, she interrupts with something about territory or security.

James feels something shift inside his chest.

Trust.

He hasn't felt this in eleven years. Not since his mother died. Not since he learned that feeling anything was weakness. But watching this small omega stand in his council chamber and identify corruption that his trained accountants missed, James feels trust bloom like a dangerous flower.

And something more dangerous follows right behind it.

He walks closer to her.

How did you know to look for that?

My father taught me. He said strategic omegas need to understand money because money is power. Money is how people control systems. If you can track the money, you can see the lies.

Smart father, James says.

Stupid for other reasons.

The corner of his mouth twitches toward a smile.

James, I need to tell you something else.

He waits. His entire body is tense.

Your father sent you a letter. I saw it on your desk earlier. He said you're becoming soft. He said you should discuss accelerating a transition.

James feels cold wash over him.

His father is moving. Making plans. Setting up contingencies for when James inevitably fails according to his standards. Because that's what Marcus does. He weakens his successors until they need him. Then he removes them.

And James just gave his father ammunition.

He's falling for his bride.

The thought hits him like a physical blow. He's falling for a small omega with a sharp mind and a history of invisibility. He's falling for someone he bought. Someone he paid for. Someone who has every reason to betray him.

James reaches out and touches her face.

Her skin is soft. Warm. Real in a way his entire life has stopped being.

You're intelligent, he says quietly.

Yes.

You're strategic.

Yes.

You could leave this pack and build something on your own. You could take everything you've learned and become powerful without me.

Iris doesn't answer immediately.

I could, she finally says. But I won't.

Why?

Because you see me. You're the first person who's ever looked at me like I'm not supposed to be invisible. You're the first one who asked me to think instead of telling me to obey.

James realizes that they're standing very close now.

That's not a good reason to stay, he says.

I know.

You could be hurt. My father will use you as leverage if he realizes I care about you.

I know that too.

And you're staying anyway?

Yes.

James feels something break open inside him.

This is what weakness feels like. This is what his father always warned him about. This is what happens when you let someone matter more than your position.

But it's also the first time James has felt like he's not completely alone.

He should send her away. He should tell her to go back to the cottage and stay distant. He should protect her by pushing her away.

Instead, he pulls her closer.

If my father makes a move, you tell me immediately. You don't investigate. You don't protect me. You come to me.

Iris nods.

I need you, James says, and the words feel like surrender.

Iris's eyes widen slightly like she's surprised to hear him say that. Like an Alpha doesn't admit to needing anyone.

Then don't let me go, she says quietly.

James knows that's exactly the wrong thing to do. He knows that keeping her close is the most dangerous decision he could make. He knows that loving her will destroy him.

But he's already made the decision without making it.

He releases her before he does something he can't take back.

Go back to the cottage. Rest. Come to the next council meeting.

Iris nods and turns to leave.

Wait.

She stops at the door.

Elena will figure out what you're doing. When she does, she'll move against you. She'll try to discredit you or hurt you. So I need you to understand something.

What?

I will burn this entire pack to the ground before I let anyone harm you.

Iris stares at him and James sees the moment she understands that he means it. That his bond to her has already superseded his bond to the pack.

That's not strategy anymore. That's love.

And love is something that can destroy an Alpha.
