Chapter 2 - One Night, Two Strangers

The streetlights blurred as Gu Yi stumbled slightly, gripping his backpack tighter than he realized he needed to.

Shui Mingyun's heels clicked beside him, uneven and unsteady. She swayed slightly, holding her clutch in front of her like a shield.

"Are… are you sure this is okay?" he asked, trying to sound casual, though the alcohol had dulled his usual careful tone.

"I—Dorms are too far. I can't walk straight anyway," she said. Her voice was soft, almost lost in the hum of passing traffic.

They approached the hotel lobby. The automatic doors slid open with a soft whoosh, spilling warm air over the two of them.

Gu Yi paused, taking in the small, slightly upscale lobby. A receptionist glanced at them, slightly amused at their flushed cheeks and unsteady movements.

"Check-in," Shui Mingyun muttered, fumbling for her phone. She held it out to Gu Yi.

"No, I… I'll do it," he said instinctively.

"I insist," she said. Her hands trembled slightly as she tried to tap the screen. "I—just let me."

They moved to the counter together. The receptionist raised an eyebrow, clearly noting their condition, but said nothing.

"Name?" the receptionist asked.

Shui Mingyun tapped her phone, reading aloud, "…Shui Mingyun."

Gu Yi stepped back slightly. "…I'll use my ID for the room key," he said, keeping his voice steady.

"Fine," she muttered. The tiny flicker of annoyance in her eyes vanished as quickly as it appeared.

Elevator Ride

The elevator ride was silent except for the soft hum and the occasional beep as floors passed.

Gu Yi pressed the button for the top floor, not trusting himself to think straight. Shui Mingyun leaned against the wall, closing her eyes briefly.

"You… don't talk much, do you?" she slurred slightly.

"I… usually do," he said. "…Just not when I'm drunk."

Her lips curved into the faintest of smiles. "…Fair enough."

The elevator dinged, and the doors opened.

Entering the Room

They stepped in, and Gu Yi immediately noticed the faint scent of fresh linen and mild perfume lingering from the last guest.

Shui Mingyun dropped her clutch onto the bed with a soft thud. "…It's fine," she said, spinning toward him with a grin that didn't quite reach her eyes.

Gu Yi set down his backpack. "…Yeah. It's fine," he echoed, though the tension in his chest tightened.

They moved in an awkward, alcohol-fueled dance around each other—trying not to bump into the furniture, trying not to look at each other too closely, trying not to acknowledge the strange electricity that hummed between them.

The Awkward Bed

Shui Mingyun sat down first on one edge of the bed, patting the sheet next to her. "…Sit."

Gu Yi hesitated. "…Right here?"

"…Yes," she said. "…We're both drunk. It's safer this way."

He sat, careful to leave some distance. Their shoulders almost touched, but not quite.

Silence fell. Thick. Heavy.

"…We shouldn't even be here," he said quietly, more to himself than to her.

"…Yeah," she agreed, her gaze fixed on the ceiling. "…But we are."

A laugh escaped him—a short, nervous chuckle. "We're… ridiculous, huh?"

She didn't answer. Instead, she turned slightly toward him, her eyes glassy but sharp. "We're… surviving the night, I guess."

Shared Vulnerability

Time passed slowly. The alcohol softened them, their guards falling just enough to notice each other—not as the freshman and the senior, not as the rich girl and the ordinary guy—but as two human beings caught off guard by circumstance.

Gu Yi noticed her hand twitching slightly. "…You okay?" he asked.

"…Yeah," she whispered. "…Just dizzy. That's all."

He nodded, careful. "…Me too."

And then, somehow, their legs brushed. The movement was accidental, but the electricity it sparked made them both freeze.

Shui Mingyun shifted slightly, and Gu Yi instinctively moved closer, just enough to steady her. Their eyes met briefly—a fleeting, unspoken acknowledgment.

No words. Just… presence.

Falling Asleep

Hours passed in quiet tension. The room was dim, the hum of the city outside mixing with the soft sounds of shallow breathing.

They ended up on the same bed—not intentionally, but naturally, as if the night itself guided them together. Space between them was gone, replaced by the shared warmth of vulnerability, the unspoken comfort of having someone else who was equally out of control, equally human, equally… alone.

Gu Yi closed his eyes first. Shui Mingyun followed seconds later, their breaths synchronizing in the quiet.

Neither of them spoke again that night.

And neither realized… that a single night, a single choice, had just set the stage for a lifetime of consequences.
