Chapter 59 - What Was Built

Kael spent it on the Ashrow rooftop.

Not alone — his mother sat beside him the way she'd sat beside him on the clinic rooftop the morning after coming home, watching Valdenmoor process its changed state. But the rooftop he was on now was the old one. The Ashrow building where he'd grown up, where he'd sat the night of his Awakening watching the city and thinking about the shape of a thousand, where the first rat had died in the walls and he'd thought yes and the System had said rat revenant raised and everything that followed had followed.

The building looked the same.

The Ashrow looked the same.

But the Domain held five kilometers in every direction and the System architecture running through every street of the district was clean and honest and the Framework Memory's signal was moving through the connected node network reaching between-walkers across three cities who didn't know yet what they were reaching toward.

He looked at the city.
