Chapter 3 - Flesh and Bone, The Aegis Awakening

The world ended in a wet, muffled crunch.

One moment, Kaelen Vance was staring into the serrated abyss of the Winged Viper's gullet; the next, the sun vanished. The beast's jaws didn't just close—they collided. The pressure was instantaneous and absolute.

Crack.

Kaelen's spine didn't just break. It detonated. The force of the viper's bite sheared through his vertebrae like a hot wire through wax. His ribs collapsed inward, punching into his lungs. The air hissed out of him in a spray of red mist.

Then came the slide.

He was pulled deep into the beast's throat. It was a tunnel of pulsating, rhythmic muscle coated in a thick, caustic slime. The smell was a staggering wall of rot and fermented bile. He couldn't move his legs. He couldn't feel his lower body. He was a broken sack of meat being dragged toward a vat of stomach acid.

Above the arena, the crowd was a tomb. The thousands of spectators sat in stunned, nauseating silence. Even the elite students in the front rows, used to the brutality of the Zenith War College, looked away. Darius wiped a fleck of sand from his cheek, his expression one of bored disgust. Instructor Vespera remained at the edge of the platform, her obsidian-scaled arms crossed. She didn't look away. She watched the bulge in the viper's neck as it swallowed.

Inside the dark, Kaelen was fading. The pain had moved past a sensation and become a state of being. His charred skin, burnt to a crisp by Vespera's violet flames, was being rubbed raw by the viper's internal ridges. Every contraction of the beast's throat sent a new jolt of agony through his shattered nervous system.

Then, the cold, mechanical voice returned. It was louder this time. It didn't sound like it was coming from his ears. It was coming from his marrow.

A blinding white light erupted in Kaelen's mind, drowning out the dark of the viper's throat. A series of panels stacked themselves in his vision, cold and precise.

Kaelen tried to scream, but his throat was full of blood and snake slime. A sudden, violent heat surged from the center of his chest. It wasn't the burning pain of Vespera's fire. It was a swarm of millions of electric needles, stitching his cells together at a speed that defied physics.

The sound was the worst part. Inside the muffled silence of the viper's neck, Kaelen heard the squelch of his organs reforming. He heard his spine pop back into alignment, the bone fragments dragging themselves through his muscle to find their original places.

His lungs inflated, the jagged punctures in the tissue sealing shut in heartbeats. The 3rd-degree burns across his left side didn't just heal—the charred, dead skin sloughed off in black flakes, replaced instantly by new, pink flesh that was tougher than before.

"Ugh... gack..."

Kaelen's hand snapped up. His fingers, which had been limp and shattered seconds ago, clawed into the slimy walls of the viper's esophagus. He felt the beast's muscles tighten in response, trying to crush the "obstruction" that was refusing to go down.

The pressure was immense. The viper was a living hydraulic press. Kaelen felt his newly healed ribs groan and snap again.

Kaelen's eyes went wide in the dark. As the pain hit him, another panel flickered.

"You... have to be... kidding me," Kaelen wheezed. His voice was rough, but he was breathing. The caustic acid of the snake's throat was burning his throat, but the system was healing the lining as fast as the liquid could melt it.

The viper let out a muffled, frustrated shriek from above. It felt the movement in its throat. It began to thrash, slamming its neck against the arena floor to finish the job.

Inside, Kaelen was being bounced like a pebble in a drum. His head slammed against the viper's internal cartilage. His collarbone shattered.

His body was a disaster zone of constant destruction and instantaneous reconstruction. He was being murdered every second, and he was being reborn every half-second.

"So that's the game, huh?" Kaelen spat out a mouthful of bile. "I'm a self-repairing chew toy. Great. Best reincarnation ever."

His cynicism was the only thing keeping him from losing his mind. The pain was absolute, but the system was stripping away the psychological shock, leaving him with a cold, desperate clarity. He was trapped in the dark, being slowly digested, but he was getting stronger with every broken bone.

He reached out his right hand, feeling the rhythmic pulse of the viper's carotid artery through the throat lining. It was thick as a fire hose.

"If I'm going to be stuck in here," Kaelen gritted his teeth, feeling his jawbone knit back together for the third time in a minute, "I might as well buy a ticket out."

He looked at the TP counter. It was climbing steadily as the viper's throat muscles tried to squeeze the life out of him.

"Twelve hundred points just for being a snack," Kaelen muttered. He felt a sudden, violent contraction. The viper was trying to vomit him back up—or crush him into a slurry. The walls of the throat tightened until Kaelen's vision went red. His eyes actually popped from the pressure, only to regrow in their sockets before he could even fall unconscious.

The pain was a white-hot spike through his brain.

[Trauma Points (TP) Accumulated: +800]

"Okay... okay... that's enough of that," Kaelen gasped. His fingers dug into the snake's flesh, tearing through the inner membrane. The viper thrashed harder, its movements becoming erratic and panicked.

Kaelen stared at the system screen. He could feel the stomach acid rising from below, a pool of liquid death designed to dissolve bone in minutes.

"System. Max out the Eightfold Asura Blade. I don't care what it costs."

Kaelen's head snapped back.

It wasn't just knowledge. It was a physical invasion. Centuries of combat, thousands of sword swings, and the perfect, lethal geometry of the blade flooded into his nervous system. His muscles twitched, twitching with a power they shouldn't possess. His mind was suddenly filled with the scent of iron and the sound of steel on bone.

He wasn't a student with an F-rank resonance anymore. He was a master swordsman trapped in a tube of meat.

"Weapon," Kaelen croaked. "I need a weapon."

He looked around the dark space. There was nothing but slime and muscle. But then, he felt something hard lodged in the throat lining further down—a fragment of a previous victim's armor, or perhaps a piece of the beast's own calcified cartilage.

He lunged for it, his movements now precise and fluid despite the crushing pressure. He grabbed a jagged, curved shard of bone, about the size of a short sword. It was coated in filth, but it was sharp.

The viper gave one final, massive heave. The muscle walls closed in like the teeth of a trap. Kaelen's left arm snapped. His shoulder dislocated.

He didn't even blink.

The Hyper-Adaptive Regeneration surged, snapping the arm back into place and knitting the bone before he had even finished drawing back his makeshift blade.

The TP counter rolled over 2,000.

"My turn," Kaelen said.

His eyes, glowing with a faint, systemic blue light, fixed on the thickest part of the throat wall. He felt the Eightfold Asura Blade mastery settle into his bones. He knew exactly where to strike. He knew exactly how much force was required to rupture the carotid.

He tightened his grip on the bone shard. The viper's throat contracted one last time, a killing blow intended to finish the "prey."

Kaelen smiled. It was a dark, cynical expression that didn't belong on a teenager's face.

"Thanks for the points, you oversized belt."

He lunged.

The bone shard cut through the air with a high-pitched whistle.

Squelch.

The first strike opened a three-foot gash in the beast's inner lining. A torrent of hot, pressurized blood erupted, drenching Kaelen in a second. The viper let out a scream that shook the entire arena, its body convulsing in a death throe.

Kaelen didn't stop. He moved like a blur, the Zenith-level mastery guiding his hand. Strike two. Strike three.

He wasn't just cutting his way out. He was dismantling the beast from the inside.

The crowd in the stadium stood up as one. They saw the Winged Viper's neck suddenly bulge and deform. They heard the muffled, rhythmic sounds of something sharp tearing through muscle.

Instructor Vespera's eyes widened. For the first time, the boredom vanished from her face. She leaned forward, her hand gripping the concrete railing so hard it began to crack.

"Impossible," she whispered.

A massive, vertical slit appeared in the side of the viper's neck. A fountain of gore sprayed onto the sand, and a single, blood-soaked hand punched through the opening.

Kaelen Vance stepped out of the neck of the beast.

He was covered from head to toe in black blood and yellow slime. His uniform was in tatters, hanging off his frame like rags. He looked like a corpse that had crawled out of a mass grave, but as he stood there, the spectators saw something that made their skin crawl.

The gashes on his face and chest were closing in real-time. The steam was rising from his skin as his cells worked at a frantic, impossible speed.

He looked at the dying viper, then turned his gaze up to the observation platform. He found Vespera's eyes.

He held up the jagged bone shard, still dripping with the beast's heart-blood.

"Next time," Kaelen shouted, his voice echoing through the silent stadium, "send something that actually knows how to chew!"

The viper collapsed behind him, kicking up a final cloud of dust. Kaelen stood in the center of the carnage, the Aegis System humming in his veins, waiting for the next trauma to begin.
