Chapter 139 - The Beast Beyond the Trees

Scene 139 — "Three Heads"

The forest broke.

A massive shape emerged from the shattered crystal trees.

For several seconds—

nobody moved.

The creature stepped into the open.

It was a wolf.

But calling it a wolf felt almost insulting.

Its body was enormous.

Its shoulders rose higher than the roofs of the nearest houses.

Four immense legs pressed into the earth, each step sinking deep into the soil.

Its fur was dark enough to swallow the pale light surrounding it.

And above its shoulders—

three heads watched the settlement.

Three.

Each larger than a human.

Each carrying the same predatory stillness.

The left head slowly turned.

The center head stared straight ahead.

The right head lowered toward the fleeing villagers.

Then—

all three mouths opened.

The roar came.

The settlement shook.

The Traveler's cloak snapped violently behind him.

Several villagers fell to their knees.

Windows shattered.

Crystal fragments rained from nearby trees.

The brother's spear trembled in his hand.

Not because he wanted it to.

Because his body had understood the danger before his mind did.

The younger girl froze.

Her eyes remained fixed on the creature.

"...That's not possible."

The elder sister said nothing.

She had seen monsters before.

Large ones.

Dangerous ones.

But never this.

The beast took another step.

THOOM.

The ground cracked beneath its paw.

A wooden house at the edge of the settlement shook.

The creature didn't even look at it.

It simply moved forward.

A fence stood in its path.

One paw came down.

The fence disappeared beneath it.

The creature continued.

A stone wall blocked its path.

The center head lowered.

The beast charged.

The wall exploded.

Stone fragments flew through the air.

The three heads rose again.

Still moving.

Still advancing.

The survivor who had warned them earlier stared in horror.

His voice barely existed.

"...It never stops."

The Traveler stood among the fleeing villagers.

His eyes remained fixed on the beast.

He did not reach for a weapon.

Did not step forward.

Did not retreat.

He simply watched.

Three heads.

One body.

One direction.

Straight toward them.

The younger girl suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

"Run."

The Traveler looked down at her hand.

Then back toward the monster.

The girl realized what she had done and immediately released him.

"Sorry."

The Traveler said nothing.

Another step.

THOOM.

Another.

THOOM.

The creature was getting closer.

The brother moved in front of his sisters.

His spear lowered.

The elder sister joined him.

The Traveler remained behind them.

To them—

he was still just a wounded human.

A stranger who had barely survived his own injuries.

Someone who needed protecting.

The beast stopped.

All three heads lifted.

Six eyes stared across the settlement.

And then—

the center head slowly turned.

Its gaze settled directly upon the Traveler.

The creature became completely still.

The other two heads followed.

Three enormous heads.

Six eyes.

One silent stare.

The Traveler's expression changed almost imperceptibly.

Not fear.

Recognition.

But recognition of what—

even he did not know.

Beneath his cloak—

the ancient Anchor grew warm.

Once.

The beast took a single step forward.

And every person in the settlement understood the same thing.

It had chosen its direction.
