Chapter 135 - Beyond the Mountain

Scene 135 — "A Place Without a Map"

Morning light drifted through the windows.

The Traveler sat quietly near the table.

The bowl was empty.

The warmth of the meal had eased the ache in his body, though the bandages across his chest still reminded him of every movement.

The three siblings remained nearby.

No one hurried the conversation.

The elder sister was the first to speak.

"You asked where you are."

The Traveler lifted his eyes.

She continued calmly.

"You're in our home."

He gave a slight nod.

"I understood that."

A brief silence passed.

"I meant..."

His gaze shifted toward the window.

"...where is this place?"

The brother exchanged a glance with his sisters.

Then he walked to the open doorway and looked toward the distant crystal forest.

"It's the only home we've ever known."

The Traveler followed him outside.

A cool breeze carried the scent of unfamiliar flowers.

Silver grass swayed across the hills.

Beyond them, crystal trees shimmered beneath a pale sky unlike any he remembered.

He studied the landscape in silence.

Nothing looked familiar.

Not the mountains.

Not the rivers.

Not even the light itself.

The younger girl stood beside him.

"You've never seen this before... have you?"

The Traveler answered honestly.

"No."

She looked surprised.

"I thought all humans knew these lands."

The Traveler slowly shook his head.

"I've wandered for a long time."

"But I've never walked here."

The brother rested against the wooden fence.

"That's strange."

"We've never met anyone from outside."

The Traveler looked toward him.

"...Outside?"

The elder sister nodded.

"Our world is small."

"At least..."

She paused.

"...small to us."

"We live between the mountains and the crystal forests."

"Few people leave."

"Even fewer ever arrive."

The Traveler listened without interrupting.

Every answer only created another question.

His eyes drifted toward the distant peaks.

Somewhere beyond them...

The mountain.

The gate.

The battle.

The memories remained fragmented.

The younger girl tilted her head.

"So..."

"Where did you come from?"

The Traveler became still.

He searched his memory.

Roads.

Villages.

An old storyteller.

A forgotten doorway.

A scream.

Blackness.

Nothing connected.

Finally, he answered quietly.

"I don't know."

The words carried no uncertainty.

Only truth.

"I remember walking."

"I remember traveling west."

"After that..."

He lowered his eyes.

"...everything is broken."

The siblings looked at one another.

The elder sister spoke gently.

"Then don't force it."

"Memories return in their own time."

The Traveler nodded once.

The wind stirred his white hair.

Far across the hills, the crystal forest whispered.

He stared into the distance.

Somewhere beyond those mountains...

Something had happened.

Something important.

He could feel it.

He simply couldn't remember enough to understand it.

Then—

his hand drifted beneath his cloak.

His fingers touched wood.

The ancient Anchor.

He slowly withdrew it.

The weathered token rested quietly in his palm.

Exactly as he remembered.

For a long moment, he simply looked at it.

Then—

the Anchor shifted.

Almost imperceptibly.

Its worn edge turned.

Pointing.

West.

The Traveler's eyes narrowed.

Even here...

It still knew the direction.

And somewhere beyond the western horizon—

something was still waiting.
