Chapter 122 - The Hand That Reached the Face

Scene 122 — "The Scream Beneath the Mountain"

The hesitation lasted less than a heartbeat.

It was enough.

The Traveler moved.

Forward.

Not away.

Toward the creature.

The underground kingdom blurred.

Silver flowers vanished beneath his feet.

Crystal forests became streaks of light.

The colossal mass emerging from the gate reacted immediately.

Too late.

The Traveler crossed the distance.

The remaining tentacles converged.

A storm of black limbs.

A wall of death.

The Traveler crashed through them.

One struck his shoulder.

Another tore across his side.

A third slammed into his back.

Bone groaned.

Blood scattered across silver flowers.

Still—

he continued forward.

The creature screamed.

Not from pain.

From urgency.

For the first time, it wanted distance.

The Traveler reached the opening.

Reached the darkness beyond the gate.

And saw it.

Only a fragment.

A colossal face buried within endless darkness.

Ancient.

Distorted.

Neither beast nor man.

Countless shapes seemed to shift beneath its surface.

Never remaining the same.

Never settling into something the mind could understand.

The creature attacked again.

The Traveler raised his hand.

Then—

the black flame appeared.

Not a spark.

Not a flicker.

A flame.

Dark.

Wrong.

Reality bent around it.

The silver flowers nearest to him vanished.

Not burned.

Gone.

The air distorted.

The stone beneath his feet cracked.

The creature froze.

The Traveler did not.

His hand struck the creature's face.

Contact.

Silence.

For one impossible second—

the underground kingdom became still.

Then the scream came.

The sound shattered crystal forests.

Silver rivers erupted.

Ancient stone split apart.

The mountain above trembled.

The scream continued.

Terrible.

Endless.

The black flame spread.

Across the creature's face.

Consuming.

Not flesh.

Not skin.

Something deeper.

The creature thrashed violently.

Tentacles tore through the hidden world.

Entire sections of the underground kingdom collapsed.

The gate fractured further.

The darkness beyond churned like a storm.

The Traveler remained standing before it.

His hand pressed against the creature.

The black flame continued spreading.

Slowly.

Relentlessly.

The scream grew worse.

The sound carried terror.

Pure terror.

Then—

blood touched the flowers.

A single drop.

The Traveler's blood.

Falling from his mouth.

Another drop followed.

Then another.

His body trembled.

The wound in his chest burned.

The cold inside his blood deepened.

The black flame intensified.

The creature screamed louder.

The Traveler's head lowered slightly.

His breathing became uneven.

Blood ran from the corner of his mouth.

Then—

his eyes changed.

Dark purple.

Not bright.

Not glowing like fire.

A deep violet that seemed older than light itself.

The transformation lasted only a moment.

Yet everything reacted.

The flowers bent.

The rivers became still.

The crystal forests stopped moving.

Even the creature's scream faltered.

For the first time since emerging—

the monster looked afraid.

Not of the flame.

Of the eyes.

The Traveler did not seem to notice.

Blood continued falling from his mouth.

His body shook harder.

The black flame climbed higher across the creature's face.

The scream echoed through the mountain.

And somewhere far beyond the gate—

something answered.

A second scream.

Far larger.

Far older.

Far worse.

The creature froze.

The Traveler froze.

The underground kingdom became silent.

Because whatever had answered—

was not the creature.

And it was getting closer.
