Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 {Soul Train}

Zoey's words were laced with a mixture of caution and concern, a hint of vulnerability peeking through the tough exterior she had built around herself. Ludovica listened intently, her eyes locked onto her mother's, as she absorbed every word.

She nodded again, a silent understanding passing between them. The weight of Zoey's words was not lost on Ludovica; she knew that her mother was trying to prepare her for the harsh realities of the world beyond the backwater.

As they stood there, the air thick with unspoken emotions, Ludovica reached into her pocket and pulled out a small package.

"Mom, here, take this for the next month. It's good for beauty," she said, her voice soft and gentle. Zoey's eyes lit up with interest, and she took the package from Ludovica, a sly smile spreading across her face.

"That's good! My girl," she said, her voice dripping with satisfaction.

But what Zoey didn't know was that the package wasn't a beauty pill at all. It was a cleaning pill, one that would restore many things in Zoey's body. Ludovica had carefully selected it, knowing that her mother needed it more than she let on. The pill would help to counteract the effects of her mother's... extracurricular activities, activities that Ludovica had grown accustomed to but never spoke about.

As they stood there, the tension between them began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of understanding and mutual respect. Ludovica stepped forward, her arms opening wide, and Zoey froze for a moment, taken aback by the sudden display of affection. But then, her expression softened, and she hugged Ludovica back, holding her close.

It was a rare moment of tenderness between them, one that spoke volumes about the complex and often fraught relationship they shared. Ludovica hugged her mother tightly, trying to convey the depth of her feelings. She knew that Zoey wasn't the most conventional mother, that she had her own demons to fight, but Ludovica loved her nonetheless.

As they pulled back, Ludovica looked up at Zoey, her eyes shining with a deep affection. She knew that her mother had taken her in when she was just a baby, declaring to the entire backwater that she had adopted a baby girl. It was a gesture that had changed the course of Ludovica's life, one that she would never forget.

The memory of that day was etched in Ludovica's mind like a scar. She had been so young, so vulnerable, and yet Zoey had taken her in, given her a home and a sense of belonging. It was a debt that Ludovica could never fully repay, but she was determined to make her mother proud, to prove herself worthy of the sacrifices Zoey had made for her.

As they stood there, the sound of the station's bustle fading into the background, Ludovica felt a sense of resolve wash over her. She knew that she was about to embark on a journey that would take her far beyond the backwater, a journey that would test her limits and push her to her breaking point. But she was ready, or at least, she was as ready as she could be.

With a final nod, Ludovica turned and picked up her duffel bag, slinging it over her shoulder. Zoey watched her, a mixture of emotions playing across her face. She knew that Ludovica was leaving, that she was going to make a new life for herself, one that didn't involve the backwater or its seedier side.

As Ludovica walked away, Zoey called out after her.

"Lulu, wait!" Ludovica turned, her eyes questioning.

"Be careful, okay?" Zoey said, her voice barely above a whisper. Ludovica nodded, a small smile playing on her lips.

"I will, Mom," she said, before turning and disappearing into the crowd.

The station was a blur of noise and color, people rushing to and fro, each with their own destination in mind. Ludovica navigated the crowds with ease, her eyes scanning the signs and announcements that flashed above the platforms. She knew where she was going, had known for weeks, ever since she had received the mysterious letter that had changed everything.

With a deep breath, Ludovica stepped onto the platform, the air thick with the smell of smoke and grease. The train loomed before her, its carriages stretching out like a metal snake, ready to devour her whole. Ludovica felt a shiver run down her spine as she boarded the train, her heart pounding in her chest.

She found her seat, a small compartment in the rear of the train, and settled in for the long journey ahead. As the train pulled out of the station, Ludovica felt a sense of liberation wash over her. She was leaving the backwater the place she grew in damn this backwater city is poor as hell but it is her home.

As the train rumbled on, Ludovica's peaceful slumber was a stark contrast to the luxurious surroundings. Her face mask, a constant companion since childhood, hid her beauty from the world.

But even in sleep, her features were striking, her mask a subtle hint at the stunning woman beneath. The soft hum of the train and the gentle sway of the carriage lulled her into a deep sleep, her chest rising and falling with each breath.

The waiter's arrival broke the spell, and Ludovica's eyes fluttered open, her gaze unfocused at first. She blinked several times, her eyes adjusting to the bright lights of the train's common area.

The waiter's smile faltered for a moment as she took in Ludovica's beauty, even with the mask covering her face. "Hello, would you like anything to eat?" she asked, her voice a little softer than before.

Ludovica's voice, like a gentle breeze on a summer day, replied, "Water with honey." The waiter's face flushed, her eyes widening as she took in the sweet, melodious sound. She scribbled down the order, her hand trembling slightly as she handed Ludovica the glass.

Ludovica took the honey water, her eyes closing slightly as she raised the glass to her lips. She took a long sip, the sweetness of the honey and the coolness of the water a perfect combination.

As she sipped her drink, Ludovica's gaze wandered outside the train window, the passing scenery a blur of colors and shapes. Her eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief, a subtle smile playing on her lips.

Maybe this journey would be interesting after all. Maybe she could even find a way to get herself kicked out of the elite university. The thought sent a thrill through her, a sense of excitement and possibility.

The waiter, still hovering nearby, couldn't help but notice the way Ludovica's eyes sparkled, even behind the mask. She felt a pang of curiosity, wondering what lay beneath the surface of this beautiful, enigmatic woman.

As she turned to leave, she caught Ludovica's gaze, and for a moment, they locked eyes.

The waiter felt a shiver run down her spine, as if she had caught a glimpse of something hidden, something that only revealed itself in the briefest of moments.
