Chapter 25 - CHAPTER 23: Double Dates and Double Disasters

Friday night at The Daily Grind was anything but quiet.

String lights hung across the café, soft music played in the background, and a small chalkboard sign near the entrance read:

"Open Mic Night – Coffee & Chaos Included!"

"…This was your idea," Lia Henderson said, arms crossed as she stared at the growing crowd.

"…Correction," Ethan Cruz said, adjusting the microphone stand. "…This was our idea."

"…I said 'maybe,'" she shot back.

"…And I heard 'definitely,'" he replied confidently.

"…You always hear what you want."

"…And it usually works out," he said with a grin.

Mia popped up beside them, far too excited.

"This is perfect," she said. "Live music, coffee, and public embarrassment. What could go wrong?"

Lia and Ethan looked at each other.

"…Everything," they said in unison.

The night began smoothly… for about five minutes.

Then:

The first performer forgot their lyrics halfway through a love song.

Someone knocked over a chair trying to clap enthusiastically.

The microphone screeched loudly, causing half the café to flinch.

"…We're doing great," Ethan whispered.

"…We're surviving," Lia corrected.

Then came the double date.

Mia dragged over her friend—loud, energetic, and immediately curious about Lia and Ethan.

"So you're the famous couple," Mia's friend said, grinning. "…I've heard about the chaos."

"…It's exaggerated," Lia said quickly.

Ethan leaned in. "…It's not."

"…Not helping," she muttered.

They all sat together at a small table near the stage.

For a moment, things felt… normal.

Until Ethan was suddenly handed the microphone.

"…No," Lia said immediately.

"…Yes," Mia said, grinning. "…You're performing."

"…I don't perform," Ethan protested.

"…You exist dramatically," Lia pointed out. "…Same thing."

Five minutes later—

Ethan stood on stage.

"…This is a mistake," he said into the mic.

The crowd laughed.

"…I blame her," he added, pointing at Lia.

"…HEY!" she shouted from her seat, laughing despite herself.

He hesitated… then started talking.

Not singing.

Just talking.

"…So, uh… I spend a lot of time here," he said. "…Mostly because of coffee. And… also because of someone."

Lia froze.

"…She's kind of a disaster," he continued. "…Spills things. Yells at me. Pretends she doesn't like me—"

"I don't!" she shouted automatically.

The crowd laughed.

"…—but she does," he said, smiling. "…And somehow, between all the chaos… she makes everything feel right."

The café went quiet.

Not awkward.

Just… soft.

Lia's cheeks burned, but she couldn't look away.

"…You're embarrassing me," she muttered under her breath.

"…Worth it," he said into the mic.

Then, naturally—

The microphone cut out.

A loud screech echoed through the café.

The moment shattered.

Everyone groaned.

Lia burst out laughing.

"…Of course," she said. "…Of course that happens."

Ethan stepped off the stage, shaking his head.

"…Well," he said, sitting beside her. "…Romantic moment: ruined."

"…No," she said, smiling softly. "…Not ruined."

"…No?"

"…Just… very us," she said.

Mia leaned over. "…That was actually kind of adorable."

"…Don't encourage him," Lia said.

"…Too late," Ethan replied.

The night continued with laughter, bad singing, spilled drinks, and way too many desserts.

But something had shifted.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just… quietly stronger.

As the café emptied out and the lights dimmed, Lia nudged Ethan.

"…Hey," she said softly.

"…Yeah?"

"…Next time," she added, "…you're singing."

He stared at her.

"…Absolutely not."

She grinned. "…We'll see."

And just like that—

Chaos, laughter, and something steady underneath it all carried them into the next chapter of them.
