Chapter 3 - Life

Elias stepped into the shack. The air inside was thick and heavy. It smelled of damp earth and rotting wood. A single candle flickered on a small wooden table. Its light did not reach the corners of the room.

Lyra followed him in. She moved quietly. Her hands were folded in front of her. She looked at the bed in the corner. Her eyes were full of a soft, desperate hope.

"He is over here," she whispered.

Her voice was thin. It sounded like it might break at any moment. Elias walked toward the bed. The floorboards groaned under his boots. Every sound seemed too loud in the small space.

He looked down at the man on the bed. Lyra's father was thin. His skin had a grey, sickly tint. His breathing was shallow and uneven. Each breath sounded like a struggle. It was a wet, rattling sound.

'This is worse than I thought,' Elias noted to himself.

He did not show his concern. He kept his face calm and professional. He needed to look like he knew exactly what he was doing. Confidence was his best tool right now.

He leaned down. As he pressed his fingers to the man's pulse. It was weak and thready. He then looked at the man's fingernails. They were tinged with a faint, unnatural blue.

Elias searched his memory. He thought back to the lore of the game world. He remembered a specific quest line from the early levels. It involved a village hit by a mana-leak.

'This isn't a normal flu,' he thought. 'This is Aetheric Congestion.'

In the game, this happened when a person with no magic talent stayed near a mana-dense area for too long. Their body couldn't process the ambient energy. It started to crystallize in their lungs.

"How long has he been like this?" Elias asked.

He didn't look up. He kept his eyes on the man's chest.

"Two weeks," Lyra replied. "It started as a cough. Then he just stopped waking up. The village doctor said it was just a fever. He said it would pass."

"The doctor was wrong," Elias said.

He looked at her now. He made sure his expression was soft. He wanted her to see him as her only hope.

"His body is being poisoned by the air itself," Elias explained. "The mana in this region is too much for him. It is clogging his system. If we don't clear it soon, his heart will stop."

Lyra's face went pale. She gripped the fabric of her skirt. Her knuckles were white.

"Can you save him?" she asked.

She stepped closer. She was almost touching his sleeve. The sweetness in her voice was tinged with terror.

"I can," Elias said. "But it is a difficult process. It requires a deep connection. I have to pull the energy out of him. I have to take it into myself."

This was a lie. He didn't need to take it into himself. But he needed a reason for the System to intervene. He needed a reason for what came next.

'System,' he called out in his mind. 'Initialize the [Slave System] interface.'

A translucent screen appeared in front of his eyes. It was blue and glowing. Lyra could not see it. She only saw him staring intensely at her father.

[Target identified: Lyra (Potential Slave)]

[Condition: Extreme Emotional Vulnerability]

[Option: Life-Debt Contract]

[Description: Save the target's relative to bind the target to a master-servant contract. The target will remain unaware of the binding until the Master chooses to reveal it.]

Elias felt a small spark of excitement. He had to suppressed it. He had to play this perfectly.

"Lyra, I need you to trust me," he said.

He reached out. He took her hand. Her hand was cold and shaking.

"I can save him. But the magic I use is ancient. It creates a bond. Since I am saving a life through you, our fates will be tied. Do you understand?"

Lyra didn't hesitate. She didn't even ask what that meant.

"I don't care," she said. "Just save him. Please. I will do anything."

'There it is,' Elias thought. 'The verbal consent.'

The System chimed in his head. It was a sharp, clear sound.

[Contract conditions met.]

[Initiating: Life-Debt / Slave Binding.]

[Status: Pending Completion of Task.]

Elias placed his hand on the father's chest. He closed his eyes. He wasn't using his own mana. He was using the System's internal "Purify" function. It was a one-time perk for new players in this role.

A faint light began to glow under his palm. It was a soft gold. Lyra gasped. She watched with wide eyes. To her, this looked like a miracle.

Elias felt the energy moving. The System was working. It was pulling the crystallized mana out of the man's lungs. It felt like a warm hum against his skin.

The rattling breath slowed down. The man's chest began to rise and fall with more ease. The blue tint on his nails started to fade.

The process took several minutes. Elias made sure to sweat a little. He breathed heavily. He wanted to look like he was exerting himself. He wanted her to feel the weight of his "sacrifice."

Finally, the man took a deep, clear breath. He didn't wake up yet. But the color was returning to his cheeks. He looked like he was simply sleeping.

Elias pulled his hand away. He let himself stumble back slightly. Lyra caught his arm.

"He's breathing," she whispered. "He's actually breathing."

She looked at her father. Then she looked at Elias. Tears were streaming down her face. She looked at him with a mix of awe and pure devotion.

"You did it," she said. "You really did it."

The System screen flashed brightly before Elias.

[Task Complete.]

[Subject: Lyra is now bound under the Slave System.]

[Current Status: Latent Loyalty (High).]

[Reward: Level Up!]

Elias felt a surge of strength. It was a physical rush. It started at the base of his spine and moved upward. It felt better than any drug.

[You are now Level 2.]

[You have 5 Attribute Points to distribute.]

He looked at the menu. He had options. He could put points into Magic to increase his own power. He could put them into Sword Skill or Defense.

Then he saw the [Slave Management] tab.

[Slave System Enhancement: Level 1]

[Benefit: Increases the growth rate of subordinates and ensures absolute obedience in stressful situations.]

Elias thought about it. He needed to be strong. But he also needed Lyra to be useful. If she stayed weak, she was just a burden. If he invested in her, she could become his greatest weapon.

'I need a balance,' he decided.

He put 2 points into [Slave System Enhancement]. He felt a shift in the bond. He could almost feel Lyra's emotions now. They were a warm, fuzzy blur in the back of his mind.

He put the remaining 3 points into [Magic].

He felt his internal mana pool expand. It felt like a cup being replaced by a bowl. He could hold more power now.

[Attributes Updated.]

[Magic: 8 (+3)]

[Slave System: Level 2 (+2)]

Lyra was still holding his arm. She didn't let go. She seemed to find comfort in the contact.

"I can never thank you enough," she said.

She looked down at her feet. She was blushing.

"I said I would do anything. I meant it. My life belongs to you now, Elias."

Elias smiled. It was a kind, gentle smile. It was the kind of smile a hero would have.

"Don't worry about that right now," he said. "Just take care of him. I will be nearby."

'She has no idea,' he thought. 'The contract is sealed. She belongs to me! And the best part is, she thinks she chose it.'

He stepped back toward the door. He felt satisfied. The foundation was laid.

"Rest, Lyra," he said. "We have much to do tomorrow."

She nodded obediently. She didn't even question him. She just watched him leave with that same, sweet gaze. It was a gaze that was starting to look a little too intense.

Elias walked out into the cool night air. He felt the weight of his new power.
