Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

Outside Talia's House — The Silence After

Nobody speaks.

The street is completely still. Talia's body on the ground. The red darkness pressing in from every side. Johnny gone. And Andrew standing in the middle of all of it, red light burning behind his eyes, completely unbothered by any of it.

Son breaks the silence first.

"Why," he says. Just that. One word.

Andrew looks at him.

"Do you actually not understand?" His voice drops into something cold and deliberate. "Your father killed my father. And you want me to just — what? Move on? Forgive it? Your father destroyed everything I had and your family kept living like nothing happened." He raises the blade, the steel catching what little light exists in the red dark. "I am going to make you feel every single thing I felt. Every year of it. Every night of it. And then I'm going to take your head and leave it on the bridge between Queens and Brooklyn for the whole city to find."

He moves forward.

Son runs.

Through the hallway, into the kitchen — he yanks open the first drawer he finds and pulls out two knives, one in each hand, turning just as Andrew comes through the doorway behind him.

Andrew drives his blade forward —

Son crosses both knives and catches it between them, stopping the strike inches from his chest. He pushes Andrew back and moves out of the kitchen.

He finds Leo immediately.

"Here." He presses one of the knives into Leo's hand.

Leo looks at it. Then at Jason across the room.

"I'm going to kill you," Leo says flatly.

Jason grins wide and completely unhinged.

"You're the one who's ending tonight, man. RIGHT HERE."

He comes forward laughing —

George steps in and wraps both arms around Jason from behind, locking him up —

Jason drives his elbow back hard into Leo's ribs. Both Leo and George hit the floor.

Leo scrambles up and takes the stairs. Jason tears after him, taking them two at a time, knife out.

At the top of the landing Jason swings —

Leo drops the knife deliberately, letting it fall to the floor below.

He sidesteps the strike, grabs Jason by the collar with both hands, and throws him off the upper landing.

Jason crashes down to the lower floor with a sound that shakes the walls.

Gowin moves immediately — she's already there, catching Leo's knife off the floor before Jason hits the ground, coming up with it in her hand.

Andrew watches her from across the room.

He vanishes.

Reappears directly in front of her. Red eyes blazing. Face inches from hers.

"Didn't you have feelings for me, Gowin?" he says softly. "Wasn't that real? Come with me. Stay with me. We could build something — you and I. We could raise killers together."

Gowin stares at him.

"Go to hell," she says.

And drives her fist into his face with full force.

Andrew's head snaps back. He touches his jaw slowly.

"Your hands are strong," he says, almost admiringly. "But my blade is sharper."

He moves toward her —

Son comes from behind and grabs Andrew by both shoulders, pulling him back.

"I will kill you," Son says through his teeth. "For my father. For my mother. For Johnny. I will end you."

Andrew turns in his grip to face him.

"And I will have my revenge for my father," Andrew says. "From you. You pig."

Andrew drives the blade toward Son's midsection —

Son twists — but not fast enough. The knife opens a gash across Andrew's thigh instead. Blood, but not enough to stop him.

"AHHH — you little—"

"Why," Son says, keeping both knives up, circling. "Why did you do this to me? I trusted you. I thought you were going to help us catch him. I thought you were my friend."

"Because I am smarter than every single one of you," Andrew says, moving with him, matching the circle. "I played all of you from the first moment. Every wound I took. Every rescue. Every time I made you feel safe — I built that. I engineered it. You weren't investigating Moster. You were exactly where I needed you to be, doing exactly what I needed you to do."

He comes forward —

Son meets him. Both his knives lock against Andrew's single blade, steel grinding against steel, sparks catching in the red light as they push against each other with everything they have.

Across the room, Jason gets back to his feet. Blood running into his eyes from the gash on his forehead, one hand on his back, grimacing.

"My back — ahh — but I'm alive — I'll kill every last one of you cursed—"

"You know what it feels like," Andrew says, not even looking at Jason, eyes still on Son, "to lose your father when you're barely a teenager? When you're just starting to understand who you are and what the world is? You felt that this year, Son. Didn't you?"

Son says nothing. Just breathes.

"But that's not enough. That's not close to enough. You need to suffer first. Properly. Completely. And then the head. And then the bridge."

Jason limps to Andrew's side.

"Yeah — HAHAHAHA — but I'M the one who does the suffering part — that was OUR deal — I torture them and you do the kill—"

Andrew turns and looks at Jason.

Completely calm. Completely still.

"You're right," he says. "That was the deal."

He drives the blade directly into Jason's ear.

Jason's whole body locks up. Every muscle at once. His eyes go wide and absolutely empty. Blood pours from his mouth in a single heavy stream.

The group stares in complete silence.

Andrew pulls the knife free slowly, deliberately, like he's in no hurry at all.

"Thank you," he says to Jason's body as it begins to fall. "You served your purpose. I don't have any use for you now."

He slides the blade across Jason's throat.

Jason hits the floor and doesn't move again.

The red light behind Andrew's eyes surges — deeper, brighter, more intense than anyone has ever seen it. It fills the room. It fills everything.

Andrew looks at what remains of the group in front of him.

Son. Leo. George. Gowin.

Battered. Bleeding. Exhausted.

And Andrew smiles.

It is the most terrifying thing any of them have ever seen. Not because it is monstrous. But because it is still — somehow — recognizably his smile. The same one that made them feel safe. The same one from the coffee shop and the campus bench and every moment they thought they had a friend.

Turned into something else entirely.
