Chapter 92: The Promise
The streets of Kingsville had fallen into an easy silence.
The peaceful silence of a city at rest. Far away was the unsettling quiet that only followed disaster. Buildings still bore fresh scars from the battle that had shaken the district only hours earlier. Cracked pavement stretched beneath the city center, while shattered glass glittered faintly beneath the fading afternoon sun.
A gentle breeze drifted through the empty streets.
Whoooooosh...
It carried with it the scent of dust, smoke, and warm concrete.
But beneath all of that... There was another scent.
A familiar one.
Daito stopped walking.
His eyes settled on the modest house standing quietly at the end of the street.
The same house.
The same front door.
The same place where life had once been painfully ordinary.
Back then, he hadn't been a fighter burdened with impossible decisions. He hadn't been someone people relied on to save them. He hadn't been carrying the weight of a dying world on his shoulders.
He had simply been... A boy.
For several long moments, he stood motionless, staring at the house as countless memories drifted through his mind.
Laughter.
School uniforms.
Shared lunches.
Dreams that once felt close enough to touch. Slowly, he raised his hand toward the door.
His fist hovered there for a second.
Then—
Knock...
A brief pause.
Knock... Knock...
Silence answered him at first.
Then came the sound of soft footsteps approaching from inside.
Tap... Tap... Tap...
Careful and unhurried.
The door slowly creaked open.
Creeeak...
Standing in the doorway was Mei-Mei Warona. Her eyes widened ever so slightly the moment she saw him.
Not in shock nor in disbelief.
More like someone whose heart had quietly hoped for something it never truly expected to happen.
"...Daito."
Her voice was gentle and warm enough to soften even the weight pressing against his chest.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Daito simply looked at her like really looked at her.
Her familiar smile.
The way strands of hair danced across her face in the wind.
The quiet kindness in her eyes.
It felt as though he was trying to memorize every detail, afraid that if he looked away, the image would disappear forever.
"...Hey," he finally said.
A faint smile appeared on Mei-Mei's lips, though it never quite reached her eyes.
"You didn't have to come back this late."
Daito slowly shook his head.
"I did."
A quiet silence settled between them.
Without another word, Mei-Mei stepped outside and gently closed the door behind her.
Click.
Now they stood facing one another only a few steps apart.
Yet somehow, those few steps felt wider than the distance between entire cities.
"There was trouble in the city," she said softly.
"I heard."
Daito gave a small nod.
"Yeah."
Another silence followed, this one heavier than the last.
She lowered her gaze for only a second before looking back at him.
"You're leaving... aren't you?"
The question wasn't loud.
It wasn't dramatic but it landed with enough weight to make his chest tighten. Daito didn't answer immediately, because he didn't have to.
She already knew.
"...Yeah."
Mei-Mei let out a quiet breath.
"You always do."
There was no anger in her voice, and no bitterness, only honesty.
The kind that hurt far more than accusations ever could.
Daito took a slow step closer.
"This time is different."
She tilted her head ever so slightly before giving him a sad smile.
"You said that before."
He frowned.
"When?"
She laughed softly.
"Back in school."
For the first time that day, a small chuckle escaped him.
"...Yeah."
The memories came rushing back without warning.
Sneaking out of class together.
Walking beneath rows of trees after school.
Sharing food from the same lunchbox.
Arguing over meaningless things.
Dreaming about futures that seemed so simple back then.
"You used to skip class just to walk me home," Mei-Mei said with a quiet smile.
"You always dragged me to the park even when I said I was too busy."
She looked into his eyes.
"And..."
"You used to smile more."
Daito looked away.
His smile faded.
"...Yeah."
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Life was easier then."
Mei-Mei slowly stepped forward until only inches separated them.
"Or maybe..."
She looked up at him, her eyes carrying a quiet strength that hadn't been there years ago.
"...You were."
The words struck him harder than any punch he'd taken in battle.
No enemy.
No monster.
No Savage.
None of them had ever hit him that deeply.
The silence stretched between them once more.
Finally, she asked the question that had been lingering in her heart all along.
"Why did you come back?"
Daito met her eyes, not as a soldier, and not as a leader.
Just as Daito.
"I didn't want to leave without seeing you again."
Her expression softened.
"You already did."
He gently shook his head.
"Not like this."
Silence returned.
Only this time... It wasn't uncomfortable.
It was filled with everything they couldn't find the courage to say aloud.
After a long while, Mei-Mei spoke again.
"Daito..."
"What are you really chasing?"
He closed his eyes briefly.
He had been asked that question before.
By allies.
By enemies.
By strangers.
But hearing it from her... It felt completely different.
He exhaled slowly.
"I'm chasing something bigger than myself."
His voice remained calm, but every word carried conviction.
"Something that could destroy everything if no one stops it."
He paused.
"And something I can't run away from."
Mei-Mei listened quietly.
She didn't interrupt and simply let him speak.
"And you're willing to lose yourself for it?"
The question lingered in the air.
Daito thought about it and really thought about it.
Then, for perhaps the first time in a long while...
He answered honestly.
"...I don't know."
He lowered his eyes.
"But I can't pretend none of this is happening."
"I can't just stand still."
A gentle smile appeared on Mei-Mei's face.
"You never could."
She laughed quietly.
"That's one of the reasons I liked you."
Daito smiled.
"...Liked?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I still do."
Fwoosh....
Time seemed to stop. The wind slowed. The sounds of the city disappeared.
There was only the two of them and nothing else mattered.
Carefully, Daito reached forward and took her hand.
His fingers wrapped gently around hers.
They were warm, fragile and real.
"I don't know when I'll come back."
She nodded.
"I know."
He swallowed.
"I might not even—"
Before he could finish, Mei-Mei lifted a finger and gently pressed it against his lips.
"No."
Her eyes shimmered ever so slightly.
"Don't say things like that."
She tightened her grip on his hand.
"Just promise me one thing."
He looked at her.
"What?"
Her voice trembled just enough to betray the emotions she had been hiding.
"Come back."
Such a simple request, yet it carried more weight than any mission he had ever accepted.
Daito looked into her eyes for what felt like forever.
Then he smiled.
A genuine one.
"I will."
She smiled back.
"You better."
Slowly...Almost hesitantly...Mei-Mei leaned forward.
Daito didn't move.
Neither of them rushed the moment.
Their lips met in a soft, gentle kiss.
No desperation, nor overwhelming passion.
Just two people quietly expressing everything words had failed to say.
They embraced each other wholeheartedly.
The world itself seemed to pause.
The breeze whispered around them.
Whoooooosh...
Even time felt reluctant to move forward.
When they finally separated, they remained close, their foreheads touching.
Neither of them spoke as they didn't need to.
Everything had already been said.
At last, Daito reluctantly stepped back.
"Take care of yourself."
Mei-Mei nodded.
"You too."
He turned away.
Took a single step, then paused.
One final glance over his shoulder.
She was still standing there watching him. Smiling through eyes that struggled to hold back tears.
He returned the smile with a small nod.
Then—
Fwoosh...
He vanished.
Gone.
Mei-Mei remained where she was, one hand still slightly raised as the evening wind swept gently through her hair.
She stared at the empty street for several long seconds before lowering her eyes.
A tiny smile appeared on her lips.
"You better come back..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"...Idiot."
For one fleeting moment...In a world consumed by chaos...There was still something worth protecting. Something worth coming home to.
Something worth fighting for.
To be continued...
