Chapter 52 - Daito Saga: Fair Play

Chapter 52: Complete Disbelief

For a heartbeat...nothing happened.

The training chamber stood perfectly still.

Daito's sword rested against Shinsei's throat, its razor-sharp edge close enough to draw a thin bead of blood if either of them so much as breathed the wrong way.

At the same time, Shinsei's open palm hovered only an inch from Daito's chest.

One strike.

One cut.

Either of them could have ended the fight.

The silence stretched.

Then—

SWOOOSH!

Both warriors moved at exactly the same instant.

Neither chose to gamble on a mutual kill.

Daito was the first to withdraw his blade, his feet gliding backward in one smooth motion. It wasn't retreat—it was a reset. His breathing steadied once more as he settled into a stance that looked almost deceptively relaxed.

Across from him, Shinsei lowered her hand just enough to create space, her eyes never leaving his.

For a fraction of a second...

Neither attacked.

Then Daito vanished.

FWOOOOSH!!

His body burst forward with explosive speed.

His sword flashed.

SLING!

A diagonal slash tore through the air.

Before the swing had even completed, he reversed his wrists.

SHWING!

A horizontal cut followed immediately.

He pivoted on his lead foot.

The blade circled behind him before whipping forward once more.

SLAAASH!

A reverse cut.

Without breaking momentum a thrust.

SHING!

Each attack flowed seamlessly into the next.

No pauses.

No wasted movement.

Every strike naturally became the beginning of another.

His feet slid across the steel floor with elegant precision.

THUD... THUD... SLIDE...

He pivoted.

Glided.

Turned.

Every shift of his body created a new angle of attack. Every rotation threatened a different vital point. Shinsei's expression sharpened.

She dodged.

FWOOSH!

The first slash passed so close that a few strands of her hair drifted through the air.

She slipped beneath the second.

Redirected the third.

Barely avoided the fourth.

Even so—

SSSHK!

A thin cut opened across her cheek.

She stepped back.

Another slash arrived immediately.

SHING!

She blocked it. But Daito had already changed direction. His blade came from below.

SSSHK!

A shallow cut appeared along her forearm.

She twisted away.

Another strike.

Another adjustment.

Another impossible angle.

SHINK!

This time the blade grazed her side, tearing through her clothing before drawing another thin line of crimson across her skin.

For the first time since the battle had begun...

Shinsei was defending.

Step.

Parry.

Slip.

Block.

Every movement became reactive rather than proactive.

Daito had seized complete control of the tempo.

"You continue adapting," Daito said calmly between exchanges, his breathing never breaking despite the relentless assault.

CLING!

Steel screamed as Shinsei deflected another slash.

"But eventually..."

He spun.

His blade carved a brilliant silver arc through the air.

SLING!!

The force alone drove Shinsei backward.

"...you'll run out of ways to respond."

He stepped in once more.

A thrust surged toward her shoulder.

SHING!

The blade stopped just short before changing direction again.

"Everyone does."

The chamber echoed with the sound of steel.

CLANG!

SHING!

SLASH!

The spectators could scarcely follow the exchange.

Monday found himself unconsciously holding his breath.

Brandon stared in disbelief.

Even Wei-Wan's usually composed expression had hardened.

"...He's leading the dance now," Zachia whispered.

"...He's making her react."

For perhaps the first time...Shinsei felt genuine pressure. Not fear, not panic, just pressure.

* * *

Her breathing deepened ever so slightly.

Her brows lowered.

Then...

She sighed.

"...Enough."

Her voice was calm.

Cold.

Final.

Daito stepped in with another thrust.

The perfect opportunity.

Normally, Shinsei would have slipped around it.

Instead she walked directly into it.

GRIP!!

Her bare hand closed around the blade. Steel bit into flesh. Blood immediately spilled between her fingers.

The edge cut deep but she didn't let go. Daito's eyes widened ever so slightly.

It wasn't fear but pure surprise.

Shinsei smiled.

"You've become predictable."

Before Daito could react, she lunged forward.

HEADBUTT!!

CRAAACK!!

Their foreheads collided violently. The impact exploded through Daito's skull.

His vision blurred instantly.

A sharp ringing drowned out the sounds of the chamber.

"...Tch..."

His footing staggered.

That single opening was enough.

Shinsei released the blade. Blood dripped from her wounded palm as she flowed into her next movement.

A jab.

THUD!

It buried itself into Daito's ribs.

A palm strike.

BAM!

His sternum shuddered beneath the impact.

A low kick.

KA-POW!

His thigh buckled.

A hook.

CRACK!

His jaw snapped sideways.

Then another, another, and another.

Left.

Right.

Body.

Head.

Elbow.

Knee.

Palm.

Hook.

Every strike connected with frightening precision.

THUD!

POW!

CRACK!

BAM!

She wasn't simply attacking. She was dismantling him. Each blow targeted something different.

A nerve.

A tendon.

A joint.

A muscle group.

Every successful hit made the next one easier.

Daito's guard began to crumble.

His reactions slowed, his breathing became uneven, and his muscles refused to respond as quickly as before.

Aerin felt her heart tighten.

"...She's tearing him apart..."

Her voice barely escaped above a whisper.

Shinsei continued advancing like a relentless storm.

There was no anger in her movements.

No excitement, only ruthless efficiency.

Every attack had purpose.

Every combination had been calculated long before it was thrown.

Another elbow clipped Daito's shoulder.

Another palm strike hammered into his chest.

Another kick crashed into his leg.

His body lurched backward again and again.

Yet...He refused to fall.

His boots scraped across the steel floor. His breathing grew heavier. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. His vision remained blurred from the headbutt.

Still...He searched.

Not for an opening.

For a solution.

Then his right foot slammed into the ground.

Hard.

THOOOOOM!!

The chamber shook.

For the briefest instant, everyone froze.

A deep rumble rolled beneath the arena.

GRRRRMMM...

The reinforced floor split apart.

Jagged stone erupted upward from beneath the steel plating like a large stone with shattered pebbles.

KRAAAASH!!

Towering slabs of rock burst between Daito and Shinsei, forcing the two fighters apart.

Shinsei's eyes widened.

Her flawless rhythm broke.

She instinctively leaped, backward as the earth exploded beneath her feet.

FWOOSH!

Fragments of shattered stone scattered throughout the chamber.

Dust filled the air.

The spectators stared in complete disbelief.

Shinsei herself remained frozen for a brief moment before frustration flickered across her normally composed face.

"...I..."

She looked at the newly formed wall.

"...forgot."

Her voice was quiet.

"...You can actually do that."

Silence returned to the chamber.

Above the arena, Cassian slowly lowered his coffee cup.

For the first time since the battle had begun...

His expression changed.

His eyes widened slightly.

"...So..."

He leaned closer to the monitor.

"...it's real."

His analytical gaze carefully studied the towering wall of stone that now stood between the two combatants.

"So it wasn't simply a projection created by memory..."

A faint smile gradually appeared across his face.

"...He can truly use it."

The revelation intrigued him far more than the fight itself.

Somewhere beyond the dust...Daito steadied his breathing.

His body ached. His vision still swam from the headbutt. His right arm had yet to fully recover.

But despite all of that...he was still standing.

And the battle...was far from over.

to be continued....
