Chapter 410 - Chapter 408: Luna Wolves & Horus

In the western reaches of the galaxy, the 63-19 System.

This sector of space was marked only by a cold string of identification numbers on official Imperial star charts. It was one of the many fringe zones that the Great Crusade had yet to fully purge.

A massive armada of several thousand warships hung suspended in this silent stretch of the void, resting undisturbed in a region that had seen no major activity for countless years.

This was the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet of the Imperium.

It was larger, more oppressive, and vastly more powerful than the Iron Hands' 52nd, the Emperor's Children's 28th, or even the Blood Angels' primary expeditionary force.

Dozens of capital ships—Gloriana-class battleships and Retribution-class heavy cruisers—held the core of the formation like alpha wolves leading a pack.

Their hulls stretched anywhere from six to eight kilometers long. Matte-black adamantium armor plating absorbed the distant starlight, while the faint outlines of etched wolf heads were just barely visible on their reinforced hulls.

Hundreds of cruisers and frigates formed a tight, layered defensive and offensive screen around the capital ships, shifting and repositioning with the flawless coordination of a single organism.

And on the outer fringes, an enormous logistical tail comprising over two thousand transport ships, supply freighters, and mobile repair docks trailed the combat vessels.

This was the logistical backbone required to support a sector-wide military campaign. It was the system that allowed the XVI Legion, the Luna Wolves, to sweep across the stars unhindered.

Directly in the center of this pack of steel wolves, a super-battleship stretching twenty kilometers from prow to stern loomed over the rest of the fleet like the ultimate pack leader.

The Vengeful Spirit.

The flagship of Warmaster Horus Lupercal. The beating heart of the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet. The mobile throne of the Luna Wolves Legion.

The vessel boasted the Imperium's classic elongated wedge design. The prow narrowed sharply into a brutal spear tip, while the heavy stern flared out like a massive hammer. Its lines were harsh and strictly utilitarian. The armor plating jutted out in overlapping, brutalist layers without any unnecessary streamlining.

It possessed an aesthetic of pure, unadulterated warfare.

Fully sealed adamantium composite armor covered every single inch of the ship. The only exposed sections were the heavily shielded armaglass viewports of the bridge, the observation decks, and the massive hangar bays.

Silver-gray racing stripes depicting wolves in mid-stride were etched deeply into the matte-black primary armor alongside Imperial Aquilas. The engravings were half an inch deep, sharp enough to be clearly visible from ten kilometers away.

Beneath them, High Gothic script proudly spelled out a single name: Warmaster Horus.

Mounted along the vessel's central axis was a macro-cannon so obscenely large you could drive a Leman Russ battle tank straight down the barrel.

The multi-tiered command spire rose from the upper midsection of the hull, looking like the spiked dorsal ridge of some colossal deep-void leviathan. Every tier was bristling with sensor arrays and observation blisters, constantly monitoring the battlespace.

Hundreds of weapon batteries dotted the broadsides like the spines of a metallic hedgehog. Lascannons, macro-batteries, torpedo tubes, plasma annihilators... all aimed outward into the empty void, ready to completely shred anything stupid enough to wander into range.

Even the most clueless Warhammer casual could take one look at this fleet, this flagship, and those insignias, and immediately spit out a name...

The Luna Wolves.

The XVI Legion.

And the man personally crowned by the Emperor Himself...

The Warmaster of the Imperium of Man.

--

Aboard the Vengeful Spirit, inside the primary strategic command center.

The room was a massive nerve center capable of coordinating the actions of three hundred naval officers simultaneously.

A 360-degree holographic projection floated in the dead center of the room, rendering a real-time tactical overview of the 63-19 System. Nine planets orbited a central yellow dwarf star, with detailed data readouts hovering next to each one.

Diameter. Mass. Atmospheric composition. Resource estimates.

Hundreds of Imperial naval officers in crisp uniforms sat at their respective consoles. Their fingers danced across holographic keyboards, feeding a constant stream of telemetry into the central cogitator banks.

On a raised dais directly beneath the holographic display sat the Warmaster's personal command throne.

It was an imposing construct forged from solid adamantium and obsidian. The backrest stretched five meters high, carved with an intricate relief of a wolf pack swarming a colossal dragon. The armrests were inlaid with massive tusks ripped from the skull of an Ork Warboss.

Lounging on the throne was a massive, 3.9-meter-tall figure.

Matte-black ceramite-adamantium composite armor encased his entire body. The Serpent's Scales caught the dim light of the command center, giving off a dark, brooding sheen.

The armor was covered in micro-abrasions and minor scuffs. Every scratch represented a battle won. Every tiny dent was a testament to a charge led from the front.

His face was the kind of face that instantly inspired absolute awe in any mortal who looked upon it. It was incredibly handsome and sharply defined, projecting the perfect blend of imperial majesty and hardened warrior grit.

He had a broad, prominent forehead, unhidden by any helmet. Beneath his thick brows, a pair of amber eyes sat deep in their sockets, as cold and fathomless as an arctic lake. Those eyes looked as if they could see right through any lie.

A thin, old scar dragged diagonally across his left cheek, running from the cheekbone down to the jawline. He had earned it during the Battle of Gorro—a physical souvenir from the day he saved the Emperor's life from the jaws of a towering Ork Warlord.

He never bothered to have it removed.

It was a badge of absolute honor. Physical proof of the day the Emperor Himself had called him, "My son, my shield."

Horus Lupercal.

The Warmaster of the Imperium.

The Supreme Commander of the Great Crusade, personally appointed by the Emperor.

The Primarch of the XVI Legion.

The father of the Luna Wolves.

Right now, the single most powerful mortal in the entire galactic Imperium was tilting his head slightly, listening to the reports of the four figures standing before the dais.

Ezekyle Abaddon stood at the front of the group. First Captain of the Luna Wolves, and the future Warmaster of Chaos. The very man who would one day roar, "The era of the Primarchs is over!"

He was still young right now, but a blazing, barely concealed ambition already burned behind his eyes.

"Father," Abaddon's voice was deep and commanding. "Due to unexpected warp storms during transit, the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet was forced off course and dropped into an uncharted star system."

He turned slightly, gesturing to the massive holographic star chart hovering behind them.

"Preliminary augur sweeps have been completed. This is a yellow dwarf system containing nine planets. The third planet..."

Abaddon paused, dragging a finger through the air. The holographic display zoomed in, expanding to show a blue-green world.

The continental landmasses bore a striking, almost terrifying resemblance to those of Terra. At least, that was the immediate illusion it cast on any Imperial official who caught a glimpse of it.

"Habitable," Abaddon said, his tone suddenly adopting a weird edge. "Confirmed human civilization present. Tech level appears roughly on par with the Imperium."

"However..."

He turned back to face Horus on the throne. Abaddon's eyes were practically sparking with suppressed fury.

"The ruler of this world just hailed our fleet on an open channel."

Abaddon enunciated every single word with heavy emphasis.

"Their leader is publicly claiming the title of the Emperor of Mankind. He claims to be the Master of All Humanity, and he has demanded that the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet..."

"...submit to his authority."

Dead silence instantly swallowed the command center.

The naval officers working the consoles froze mid-keystroke. The Astropaths jerked their heads up, their faces pale masks of sheer disbelief. The bridge crew exchanged wide-eyed looks of absolute shock.

"Impossible!"

An Imperial official practically leaped out of his chair, his voice cracking.

"The Emperor is on Terra! Literally the entire Imperium knows that! Who the hell would dare impersonate the Master of Mankind?! They're completely insane! Utterly out of their minds!"

Another official frantically agreed, cold sweat already beading on his forehead.

"Declaring yourself the Emperor right in front of the Warmaster's flagship? What kind of..."

He couldn't even finish the sentence. Everyone knew exactly what this meant.

It was heresy.

Pure, unadulterated, unmitigated heresy. Blasphemy of the highest order that had to be purged.

But the continental outlines on the holographic display... those incredibly familiar shapes...

Countless pairs of eyes darted nervously between the star chart and each other.

No one dared to voice the impossible thought aloud. But the exact same question echoed in everyone's mind...

This is impossible.

How could Terra be here?

Terra is in the Sol System! It's the sacred cradle of humanity! The seat of the Emperor!

But if this isn't Terra, why do the continents look so similar? And if this isn't Terra, who the hell has the balls to call themselves the Emperor?

The silence was broken as the holographic display shifted again, pulling up a video feed.

It was a data stream broadcast from the planet's surface, automatically intercepted and decrypted by the fleet's cogitators.

The footage displayed a sprawling complex of magnificent palaces reaching into the clouds, topped with golden spires that pierced the sky. Countless pilgrims were prostrating themselves on seemingly endless grand staircases, chanting "Long live the Emperor."

A towering statue dominated a central plaza. The face... it bore a solid seventy percent resemblance to the real Emperor.

And then there were the banners.

The Imperial Aquila.

The two-headed eagle.

Everything was screaming out to these men of the true Imperium...

This was Terra.

Or rather, the people here firmly believed that this was Terra.

Were they... lost colonials?

The command center plunged into silence once again.

This silence dragged on even longer than the last. Even the most grizzled Imperial officials were at a loss for words.

Because nobody knew how to handle a world like this.

A group of lost children drifting in the stellar sea, living out a massive, self-sustaining lie. They honestly believed they were the absolute center of humanity, completely unaware that they were nothing more than a speck of dust on the galactic fringe.
