"Ma'am...they called!"
Nina stirred, groggily opening her eyes as her maid burst in.
"The hospital called!"Nina's heart skipped the moment her maid mentioned the word 'hospital'.She woke up with a start with her long hair all messed up.
"What did they say?"She reached for her phone and unlocked it subconsciously as her sleepy eyes widened in horror.
"You should go....now!"
"What happened to him?"Nina sprang out of bed, randomly grabbed clothes from her closet and put them in a frenzy.
"They didn't say!"
In seconds Nina was out the door,her hair a mess and car keys in hand.She drove all the way to Lenoworth hospital weaving through traffic like a madman.
Nina would not live if something happened to him....yes him,her husband. It had been more than a month without hearing his sweet voice call her or say anything.Those days were totally unbearable.This had been the longest period without each other present since they got married.
"Will you marry me Nina!"After a year of dating and love,he had proposed to her under a shiny sky at night."It is you Nina!It will always be you...forever!"Then a beautiful wedding followed after a week.
It was the most colourful day in their lives, their wedding day.Nina vividly replayed this moment every day she woke up.Her husband had married her in a beautiful sunny day infront of everyone.Every girl envied her on that day; because of her beauty and especially her husband,Conrad..yes Conrad, that was his name.He was both rich and handsome.
"Till death my love!"His deep masculine voice had whispered in her ear after the vows and just like that she had married the love of her life.Marrying Conrad Williams meant becoming a mistress in the big Williams house which didn't mean anything to Nina.Nina and Conrad were in love with each other.
Days of love slowly turned into years of more love and happy marriage.Nina became the best wife to Conrad as love and respect grew stronger.
"What more could I desire than you!"This had become his phrase every single morning.
Everything was perfect... until it happened,the accident happened.Nina believed that it was her fault that everything happened.She remembered every single detail about that tragic morning."Conrad,my love, would you mind accompanying me for my morning walk today?"She had asked and insisted until he gave in."Don't you always get what you want with that look!"
The walk beside the road was amazing but suddenly in a heart-stopping moment,a car hurtled out of control heading straight for Nina. In a lightning-fast move,Conrad pushed Nina for safety and took the impact instead.Luckily,Nina was unharmed but Conrad...he was bad.
After the selfless act, unconscious Conrad was taken to the Lenoworth hospital by an ambulance while Nina was shattered into pieces but hopeful. Nina was fidgeting when the doctor came to report her husband's condition.She almost ran to the doctor when she saw him approaching.
"Doctor, how's my husband? H..he's okay, right?My husband is ok!"She asked with a shaking voice.
"Ma'am we did everything we could!"The doctor tried to be gentle,"but the impact on your husband was severe and he suffered a serious head injury.."Nina cut him off with tears.
"Where's my husband doctor?"The doctor continued choosing his words carefully.
"Your husband is currently in a c...coma but we're doing everything we can to save his life."
Nina slammed her hands on the hospital wall,her eyes welling up,"N-no doctor, y..you can't say that!"Her voice started cracking as she collapsed into tears.
Days of sobbing and loneliness then followed.
Conrad's parents came a week after the news, they were always like that... divorced and away.
Nina could not leave her husband for a minute except at night,which was a restriction by the Lenoworth hospital.She became hopeless day by day after seeing no progress on his condition;not talking,not laughing...not doing anything.
She could not forgive herself every time she saw her husband lying helplessly on that white patients' bed.
After a fast journey,Nina made it to Lenoworth hospital."Good morning ma'am"The familiar voice of the receptionist greeted her as usual except that today was a bit early.Nina didn't have time for sweet greetings;her heartbeat was at its fastest.She could not understand the meaning of the early call to the hospital.
"Nothing can happen to my husband"She repeated this to herself as she subconsciously walked upstairs to her husband's wardroom.
She ran into her mother-in-law at the door.
Mrs Hana Williams was Conrad's mother.She had divorced with her husband just after Conrad joined high school.She only checked up on him for some days and left for overseas. Mr Williams was a billionaire,so he had Conrad provided with everything while at overseas.He too checked in some days and left for fun in overseas. At eighteen,Conrad was given mandate over all his father's businesses in town, and in this way the young man build his empire.
"What happened Mrs Williams?"Their relationship was not deep so Nina made it official instead.
"Come on in Nina!"Hana ushered her inside in a cracking voice.For a second,Nina hesitated.What could have happened to Conrad that Mrs Williams will there that early morning.
She then gathered up all her courage and walked inside. "Mr Williams?"In that second she noticed Mr Williams' presence.
"Doctor?"Nina recognised a lady in hospital uniform standing next to same-sleeping Conrad.
"Thank you for coming Williams family. Mr Conrad is awake!"
At that moment Conrad slowly opened his eyes and blinked away the haze.Everyone's face was in disbelief,smiling and tears streaming down.Nina was frozen in shock.Hana rushed to him and squeezed his hand."Son welcome back....we've been waiting for you ....you've been gone for such a long time."He opens his mouth.
"M... mother!"He stares at her smiling then turns his gaze to his father beside the bed.
"Father?"
"Son, welcome back.You scared us.We've been waiting for you,me, your mother and her."
He looked at her."Honey, you scared me!"
Confusion etched on his face,no spark of recognition."Who are you?"
"Honey, it's me!"
She looked at him...there was nothing... just blank eyes.Everything had changed.
