Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: System Reward—The Dragon Pond

The silence that followed the departure of the helicopter was far more oppressive than the roar of its blades. As the metal bird vanished into the horizon, carrying a rejuvenated Elder Qing Xu back to the power centers of the capital, the village of Green Bamboo felt as though it had been dropped into a vacuum.

Director Wang stood paralyzed, his eyes fixed on the empty space where the "old" man had stood. His hands, still gripping the camera gimbal, were slick with cold sweat. Beside him, Su Ye, the show's star host, was pale. Her professional composure, usually unshakable, had shattered like glass.

"Director..." Su Ye's voice was a mere breath, trembling with a mix of awe and terror. "That tea... it wasn't just medicine. It was the Fountain of Youth. Did you see his hair? His skin? He didn't just feel better; he became young."

Director Wang swallowed hard, his throat feeling like it was filled with sand. He was a man who had spent decades in the entertainment industry, seeing the world's most powerful people chase youth with surgeries and secret serums. But this? This was divine.

"We can't ask for it, Su Ye," Wang whispered, his eyes darting toward the closed gate of the courtyard. "Don't even let the thought take root in your mind. We are just ants watching a giant move his foot. If we ask for the tea, we aren't asking for a gift—we're begging for a death sentence from the karma of the universe."

Behind them, the film crew moved like zombies. They were professionals, yet they were currently filming something that defied every law of biology and physics they had ever been taught.

The Divine Reward

Inside the courtyard, the atmosphere was vastly different. For Chen Qing, the "miracle" he had just performed was no more taxing than boiling an egg. He was currently leaning against the stone table, watching a translucent blue interface hover in the air.

[Ding! Mission Completed: Shock the Hidden World.] [Assessment: SSS Grade. You have created a new Legend. The name 'Ancestor of the Green Bamboo' has begun to circulate among the world's power brokers.] [Reward Issued: The 10,000-Year Dragon Pond Expansion.] [Reward Issued: One Drop of True Dragon Blood (Pet Evolution Item).]

Chen Qing raised an eyebrow. "SSS Grade? I suppose seeing an octogenarian turn into a middle-aged athlete is a bit much for the common folk."

Suddenly, a low, rhythmic vibration began to rise from beneath his feet. It wasn't the sharp jolt of an earthquake, but a deep, tectonic shifting—as if the earth itself were exhaling a long-held breath.

In the far corner of the yard sat a modest, decorative stone pond. It was barely three feet wide, home to a few lily pads and a single, particularly fat Golden Koi fish that Chen Qing had rescued from a market years ago.

Rumble.

The ground around the pond didn't crack; it simply moved. The earth slid aside as if it were liquid, and the stone basin of the pond began to descend, deeper and deeper into the dark loam. The water, previously a murky green, suddenly began to churn. A jet of crystal-clear water erupted from the center, smelling of ozone and ancient ice.

This was the 10,000-Year Dragon Pond.

As it expanded, it connected directly to the Earth's primary spiritual vein—the "Dragon Pulse." The water turned a deep, mystical navy blue, so clear that one could see down dozens of feet into what looked like an underwater cavern.

On the surface, green shoots broke the water. In seconds, they blossomed into Seven-Colored Spirit Lotuses. Each petal glowed with a different hue of the spectrum, releasing a fragrance that could clear the mind of any mental demon.

Chen Qing walked to the edge of the new, massive pond. The Golden Koi, which he affectionately called "Little Gold," was swimming in circles, its fins flapping frantically as it felt the change in the water's density.

The Transmutation of the Koi

"You've been with me for three years," Chen Qing said softly, his voice echoing over the water. "You've listened to my stories and eaten my scraps. Today, I suppose it's time you became more than a fish."

He reached into the "System Inventory" and pulled out a small, crystal vial. Inside was a single drop of liquid that looked like a molten ruby. It didn't just sit in the vial; it pulsed with a heartbeat. This was the True Dragon Blood—the essence of a creature that had once ruled the heavens.

The moment the vial was opened, a faint, majestic roar echoed from the blood itself.

Chen Qing tipped the vial. The drop fell.

The Golden Koi didn't hesitate. Sensing the supreme opportunity, it leaped from the water, its golden scales catching the sunlight, and swallowed the drop mid-air.

Splash!

The second the fish hit the water, the pond exploded into a geyser of white foam.

The transformation was not gentle. The koi began to thrash violently, its body elongating and twisting. To the observers outside, it sounded like a leviathan was fighting a battle behind the courtyard walls.

The fish's golden scales were shed in a frantic cloud, sinking to the bottom of the pond like discarded gold leaf. In their place, new scales emerged—larger, harder, and shimmering with a dull, indestructible luster. Two bony protrusions burst from its forehead, branching out into intricate, velvet-covered antlers. Its whiskers grew long and thin, trailing in the water like silken threads, and four-toed claws tore through its belly, grasping at the air.

ROAR!

A sound erupted from the pond that had not been heard on Earth for millennia. It was a low-frequency vibration that rattled the teeth of everyone in the village. It wasn't the roar of a lion or the scream of a bird; it was the sound of thunder given a voice.

Terror of the Mortals

Outside the courtyard, the film crew was thrown into a panic.

"What was that?!" Lin Feng, the cameraman, screamed, dropping to his knees and covering his ears. "A dinosaur? Did a dinosaur just wake up in there?"

The high-sensitivity microphones on the cameras peaked and then hissed into static. The sound was too "large" for the equipment to handle.

Director Wang clutched a nearby tree for support. "Look at the sky! Look at the clouds!"

Above the Green Bamboo village, the clear blue sky was being forcibly rewritten. The clouds weren't drifting; they were being pulled into a massive, spinning vortex centered directly over Chen Qing's yard. The air pressure dropped so rapidly that everyone's ears popped.

For a fleeting second, the mist within the vortex thinned. The millions of viewers watching the livestream saw it.

A head the size of a carriage, covered in golden scales, with eyes like molten gold and vertical pupils that held the wisdom of an eon. It stared down through the clouds, a phantom image of majesty and power, before it dove back down toward the courtyard with a flick of its massive tail.

"Tell me I didn't see a dragon."

"I saw it. The livestream recorded it. That's a Golden Dragon!"

"The hermit isn't a master... he's a Dragon Tamer!"

The chat was a chaotic mess of emojis and terrified questions. The internet was breaking. Servers in the capital were melting down as the footage was shared, reposted, and analyzed by government agencies.

The Juvenile Flood Dragon

Inside the yard, the chaos subsided. The water in the Dragon Pond became still as a mirror once again.

A creature, roughly three meters long, swam lazily toward the edge where Chen Qing stood. It was sleek, powerful, and radiating an aura of ancient nobility. It was no longer a fish.

[System Notification: Your Pet 'Little Gold' has evolved into: Juvenile Flood Dragon.] [Current Rank: Spirit Beast - Tier 4.] [Special Function: Weather Manipulation. Can control rain, wind, and lightning within a 100-mile radius.] [Current Loyalty: 100/100 (Worshipping).]

The Flood Dragon raised its head out of the water, its golden eyes blinking. It let out a soft, melodic huff of air—a bubble of pure Spirit Qi that popped against Chen Qing's hand. It lowered its head, nudging Chen Qing's palm with its wet snout, its scales feeling like cool, polished jade.

"Not bad," Chen Qing nodded, scratching the dragon between its antlers. "You look much better than you did in that market tank. Much more... dignified."

The dragon let out a low, rumbling purr that caused the Seven-Colored Lotuses to vibrate.

"Listen, Little Gold," Chen Qing said, looking out toward his vegetable garden. "Now that you have this power, I have a task for you. I'm tired of hauling water buckets from the well every morning. Since you can control the weather, you'll handle the irrigation. A light mist every morning at 6:00 AM, and a proper rain once a week. But keep it within the yard. I don't want to ruin the neighbors' laundry."

The Juvenile Flood Dragon paused, its ancient, powerful mind processing the request. It had just ascended to the rank of a divine beast, a creature capable of drowning cities or calling down lightning.

It looked at Chen Qing, then at the vegetable patch.

Obediently, it dipped its head into the water and blew a bubble of air, signaling its agreement. It was probably the only dragon in the history of the universe that was being used as an automated sprinkler system.

The World Awakens

Chen Qing stood up and stretched, his joints popping. The "Shock" mission was over, and the rewards were satisfactory. The Dragon Pond was now a self-sustaining source of high-purity Spirit Qi, meaning he wouldn't even need to brew tea to stay refreshed; the very air he breathed would be filtered through the dragon's aura.

He looked toward the gate. He knew the film crew was still out there, likely hyperventilating. He also knew that the world's governments were currently in emergency meetings, discussing the "anomaly" of Green Bamboo village.

He didn't care.

"System," Chen Qing thought.

[Yes, Host?]

"Is there any way to make the house more... soundproof? All this 'shocking' business is getting quite loud."

[Host can purchase 'Eternal Silence Arrays' in the System Shop for 5,000 Reputation Points. Would you like to view the shop?]

"Later," Chen Qing yawned. "It's time for my nap."

He walked back into his humble wooden house, leaving a literal dragon to guard his pond and a world of mortals to lose their minds over what they had just seen.

Outside, Director Wang finally found his voice.

"We're staying," he told Su Ye. "We aren't leaving this village. I don't care if the network fires us. I don't care if the government sends the army. This... this is the center of the world now."

As if in response, a light, refreshing mist began to fall over the courtyard—and only the courtyard—even though the sun was shining brightly in a cloudless sky.

The era of the hidden hermit was over; the era of the Awakening had begun. And it all started with a cup of tea and a very lucky fish.
