Chapter 18 - chapter 18: The Night He Broke His Own Rule

Adrian always believed emotions were predictable.

Avoid attachment.

Avoid chaos.

Avoid weakness.

Everything else could be managed.

Until Serena.

It happened on an ordinary evening.

Which made it more dangerous.

Serena had started volunteering quietly with one of the Kingston charity programs — something she chose herself, not something required for image.

Teaching basic financial literacy to young women trying to rebuild their lives.

When Adrian found out, he asked only one question:

"Why?"

Serena answered simply:

"Because someone helped me once when I had nothing."

That answer stayed with him longer than expected.

That night she was returning from the program later than usual.

Her phone battery had died.

The driver had been delayed.

She decided to wait outside the building.

That was mistake number two.

A black car pulled up.

Jason stepped out.

Serena immediately felt danger.

"You shouldn't be here."

"We need to talk."

"We don't."

His tone was no longer charming.

Now it sounded desperate.

"You're ruining everything."

"Your life isn't my responsibility."

"You think he actually cares about you?"

Serena stayed calm.

"That's not your concern."

Jason stepped closer.

"When this contract ends, you'll be nothing again."

Serena didn't step back.

"I was somebody before him."

That angered him.

He grabbed her arm roughly.

"You think you're better now?"

Before Serena could react—

A voice cut through the night:

"Remove your hand."

Jason froze.

Adrian stood there.

No security.

No assistant.

Just him.

Jason let go immediately.

"You tracked her?"

Adrian answered calmly:

"Her phone died. She didn't check in. That is unusual."

Serena blinked.

He noticed that?

Jason tried to recover confidence.

"You're too late. This ends when the contract ends anyway."

Wrong sentence.

Very wrong sentence.

Adrian stepped closer.

His voice dropped dangerously low.

"Let me explain something clearly."

Jason stayed silent.

"Contract or not… she is under my protection."

Then Adrian said something he didn't plan:

"And I do not share what is mine."

Silence.

Even Adrian noticed what he just said.

Jason stepped back.

Defeated again.

Security arrived moments later and removed him.

When they were alone, Serena asked quietly:

"How did you know I was here?"

Adrian answered simply:

"You always message when you arrive somewhere."

"You noticed that?"

"Yes."

A pause.

Then Serena asked something important:

"You came yourself."

"Yes."

"Why not send security?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because the real answer wasn't logical.

Finally:

"I was closer."

Not true.

But safer.

Serena studied him.

"You were worried."

He didn't deny it.

"I don't tolerate risk."

She stepped closer slightly.

"You were worried about me."

That sentence stayed between them.

Then Adrian said quietly:

"You are my responsibility."

But this time…

It didn't sound like a business statement.

Serena noticed.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then asked softly:

"What happens when the year ends?"

That question hit harder than Jason's words.

Adrian answered automatically:

"We separate."

"And everything goes back?"

"Yes."

"Like we never met?"

He didn't answer.

Because suddenly…

That idea didn't feel neutral anymore.

Serena nodded slowly.

"Right."

She turned toward the car.

But Adrian noticed something new.

For the first time…

She looked disappointed.

And that bothered him more than Jason ever could.

That night Adrian sat alone in his office long after midnight.

Thinking something dangerous.

He broke his own rule tonight.

He didn't act from logic.

He acted from instinct.

From fear.

From something personal.

And the most dangerous realization finally surfaced:

He didn't just want to protect her.

He wanted her safe.

There was a difference.

And that difference…

Was emotion.

Across the mansion Serena also couldn't sleep.

Because she realized something equally terrifying:

For the first time…

The idea of leaving him after one year felt wrong.

And that was exactly what she promised herself would never happen.
