Chapter 7 - chapter 7:The Decision That Changed Everything

Serena did not sleep that night.

The small, cheap hotel room she managed to book with most of her remaining money felt nothing like the luxury she had left hours earlier.

The contrast felt symbolic.

Two different lives.

Two different futures.

One decision standing between them.

She sat on the edge of the bed, Adrian's contract resting on the small table beside her.

Her mind replayed his words:

"One year."

"No emotions."

"We become strangers again."

It sounded safe.

Too safe.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number again.

She answered carefully.

"Hello?"

A male voice answered:

"Miss Serena Vale?"

"Yes."

"We are calling from Henderson Property Management."

Her stomach tightened.

"Yes?"

"Regarding your previous apartment."

Her heart dropped.

"What about it?"

The answer came like a hammer:

"Your lease has been terminated."

Serena stood up immediately.

"That's impossible! I paid—"

"The property was purchased yesterday."

Silence.

"Purchased?"

"The new owner chose not to renew several tenants."

Her chest tightened.

"Who bought it?"

A pause.

"Reed Holdings."

Serena felt the blood drain from her face.

Vanessa's family.

Jason's new connections.

This wasn't coincidence.

This was pressure.

"When do I have to leave?"

"Immediately."

The call ended.

Serena slowly lowered the phone.

Her hands were shaking now.

Not from fear.

From realization.

They were closing every door.

Her job opportunity gone.

Her home gone.

Her family gone.

Her past relationship gone.

It felt like she was being pushed toward something.

Toward him.

Her phone buzzed again.

This time a message from Vanessa:

You should have agreed to the marriage we arranged. Life could have been easier.

Another message came seconds later:

Pride is expensive when you're poor.

Serena stared at the words.

Then slowly locked her phone.

Something inside her became very still.

Very clear.

"No," she whispered.

If she had to make a deal…

It would be her choice.

Not theirs.

She picked up Adrian's card.

Stared at the number for a long moment.

Then dialed.

He answered on the second ring.

Like he had been expecting it.

"Adrian Kingston."

Not hello.

Just control.

Serena inhaled slowly.

"It's Serena."

"I know."

Of course he did.

A small silence followed.

Then she said it:

"Is the offer still open?"

His answer came immediately.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

That did something strange to her chest.

"I have conditions."

"I'm listening."

Her voice became firm.

"This is business. Nothing else."

"Agreed."

"No controlling my personal decisions."

"Agreed."

"If I want to leave after one year, you don't stop me."

A very small pause.

Then:

"Agreed."

"And you never use my situation against me."

His voice lowered slightly.

"I don't deal that way."

Silence.

Then Serena said the words that officially started their story:

"I'll do it."

A small quiet followed.

Then Adrian asked:

"Are you sure?"

She looked around the small empty room.

"No."

Honesty.

Then she added:

"But I'm certain I need a fresh start."

His answer was quiet.

"Then we start tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?"

"Marriage license."

Her heart skipped.

"You're very direct."

"Efficiency saves time."

For some reason… she smiled slightly.

"Of course it does."

Then Adrian added something unexpected:

"Serena."

She paused.

"Yes?"

His voice was calmer than usual.

Less CEO.

More human.

"You won't regret this."

She answered honestly:

"I probably will."

That almost made him laugh.

"Fair."

Then he said:

"I'll send a car in the morning."

The call ended.

Serena sat down slowly.

Her life had just changed direction.

Not because she fell in love.

Not because she was rescued.

Because she chose survival.

And somewhere across the city…

Adrian put his phone down and looked out over the skyline.

His assistant asked:

"Sir, should I prepare the engagement announcement?"

Adrian answered calmly:

"Yes."

A pause.

Then:

"Also prepare damage control."

"Damage control?"

His eyes became sharp.

"My family won't accept her easily."

His assistant hesitated.

"Then why choose her?"

Adrian's answer was simple.

"Because she didn't choose me."

That was exactly why she was different.

And exactly why he couldn't stop thinking about her.
