By the next evening the first provisional agreement with Grey Pine was in the ledger. The original partners had not yet answered. The stores would hold. The public story in the keep remained one of ordinary adjustment rather than crisis.
Lila sat alone in the map room after the last report and looked at the northern roads drawn in old ink.
Eirik had applied pressure without sending a single new letter.
She had answered without accepting his structure and without setting the road on fire.
The cost was the same cost she had been carrying since the three names arrived on a formal notice: the knowledge that every clean refusal left someone else more exposed. The difference was that the exposure was no longer theoretical and the keep's ordinary life now sat directly on top of it.
She put out the lamp.
Frostfang would eat. The secondary road would work. The collar remained off.
The next pressure would arrive the moment Eirik decided quiet leverage was no longer enough.
